The Fishing

The lodge sits on Burnett and Hara Lake, and anglers target four main species. These are northern pike, lake trout, Arctic grayling and walleye. The website calls the walleye a very rare opportunity this far north.

Marshland fishing is strictly catch and release. Guests fish with experienced guides from 18 foot Alumarine boats with casting decks and 25 horsepower electric start Yamaha four stroke engines. Each boat has a Hummingbird Helix 7 graph.

The lodge supplies rods and reels for all species, and the guide prepares a shore lunch. A fishing licence and tackle are not included. Tackle can be rented for $25 per day per person, and lost tackle can be replaced from the tackle shop at camp.

Summarized Review Highlights

Reviews of Marshland Camps Lodge, centered on its Burnett Lake camp, are uniformly positive. All five reviews give 5 out of 5 stars. Two reviewers are repeat visitors, and one has taken close to 120 fly-in trips and says this camp and fishery stand alone. Another ranks his trip among his top 3 of all time and calls it the nicest remote camp he has seen. Guests describe host Ryan Marsh as a great guy who does things right by his guests, and the camp is described as newly opened with improvements still being added.

Guests consistently praise the fishing, especially lake trout and pike. Lake trout are described as abundant, with "hundreds" in the 5-10 lb class, dozens in the 30s (inches), and several over 40 inches (one reviewer's group reported 41 and 43 inch fish). Pike of 40 inches and up come up repeatedly, including fish of 42, 43, 45, 45.5, 46 and 48 inches, though one reviewer said pike numbers were not huge but quality was high. Walleye reports vary somewhat: one group found phenomenal numbers but nothing big, another had an 87-fish day, and others describe big walleye and a tremendous fishery for size and numbers. Guides are called top notch, and the reviewers who chose guided trips were glad they did. Guests also praise the lodging and food, which includes smoked lake trout, deep-fried pike and ribeye steaks from Ryan's own wagyu beef. One reviewer says every detail is done to perfection. Reviewers also mention a Dene native cabin on the next lake over, near the best lake trout hole, and fishing on Hara Lake.

No reviewer raised a real complaint. Points to be aware of: one group needed 4 flights to reach camp. The lakes are described as full of rocks and reefs, and guides follow stored tracks, which is one reason the guided option was recommended. Walleye size seems to vary by trip. Because the camp is new, planned additions such as another cabin, boardwalks, a guides' bunkhouse and a small gathering lodge may not all be in place yet. Based on these reviews, the destination suits anglers who want high-volume lake trout fishing and a good chance at 40-inch-plus pike. It also suits groups of friends, father-son trips, experienced fly-in anglers and walleye anglers who value numbers. Those who want a comfortable, well-run remote camp will also be well served.

Marshland Camps In Northern Saskatchewan - Report
Borger's second trip to Burnett Lake, an 11-day stay. He says host Ryan Marsh has built something very special, with more improvements since the last trip. He calls it '5 star in every single respect, and that's not said lightly.' Fishing was incredible. There were literally hundreds of lake trout, mostly 5-10 lb, and others in camp landed lake trout over 40 inches, including one just over 43. Pike numbers were not huge, but quality was high: his boat partner caught a 48 inch pike and he caught a 45. He also describes a tremendous walleye fishery for size and numbers, caught on light jigs and plastics.

Burnett Lake, Saskatchewan Trip Report
Group of 5 from the Chicago area fished Marshland Fishing's Burnett Lake camp 8/4-8/11, with 4 flights to get there. They chose the guided trip and were glad they did. The lakes are full of rocks and reefs, and the guides stick to their stored tracks. Walleye fishing was phenomenal for numbers, nothing big. Pike fishing was great, with 7 over 40 inches and the largest 42. Lake trout fishing was "off the hook", with 3 over 40 inches (largest 41) and dozens in the 30s. Ryan Marsh does the cooking and the food was plentiful. Ryan plans to add another cabin, boardwalks, a guides' bunkhouse and a small gathering lodge. 'All in all it was a great trip and I would highly recommend Ryan Marsh's camp on Burnett Lake.'

They caught big walleye, and winched up thick lake trout from deep water on Hara Lake. Chin and Ryan caught two 40-inch pike and a fat 43-inch fish. The author says Marshland does things right when it comes to guests. After close to 120 fly-in trips, he says this camp and fishery stand alone.

Past hunting guest who joined the Marshland crew with friends for the fly-in fishing trip. He says it was "outta this world" with big northerns, lake trout and even big walleye. He says the guides are top notch and know how to put guests on trophy fish.
