The Fishing

Oliver Lake is part of a large system more than 60 miles long and 10 miles wide. The lake is broken up by many bays and over 100 islands, which gives sheltered fishing even on windy days. Deep holes, reefs and rocky points suit lake trout. The many bays and shallows hold trophy northern pike.

Walleye are caught in several of the other lakes the lodge fishes. Arctic grayling and whitefish are found in the river that drains Oliver Lake. The lodge is licensed to fish on 6 lakes in total. The lodge's site pictures lake trout of 40 pounds and pike of 45 inches.

Guests fish from boats with a guide, two guests per boat. The lodge also lists fly-fishing among its trips.

Accommodations

Guests stay in cabins, each with a private bathroom. The lodge has a main lodge where meals are served on the full plan.

Two plans are offered. The light housekeeping plan covers the float plane, boat, guide, motor, fuel and cabin. The all-inclusive full plan adds a daily shore lunch and meals in the main lodge. Fishing licences are available in camp or at Missinipe.

Summarized Review Highlights

Guest sentiment in the available reviews is positive. One forum reviewer with 35 years of experience on the lake gave 5/5 stars and said the fishing "just gets better." A magazine trip report from a four-day August stay with a teenage son gave 4/5 stars and concluded that the lodge delivered "spectacularly" on both the quantity and size of fish. That writer and his son said they intend to return. Only two reviews are available, so this is a small sample.

The fishing gets the most praise. Reviewers mention large northern pike, lake trout and walleye. The trip report describes catching pike of 29-35 inches (8-15 lb) in numbers, including a 41-inch pike, and about 80 pike and lake trout in half a week. Guests also praise the guides and camp management. Jean-Luc Dube, who is described as guide, operator and camp manager, is credited with knowing the lake and with finding calm water despite cold, rainy, windy weather. Shore lunches of pike and walleye are described as a treat. On food, the trip report mentions a gourmet pork tenderloin dinner on arrival. The lodge is decorated with large mounted pike, lake trout and walleye.

The main thing to be aware of is that the accommodations are basic. The trip report calls the cabin "bare-bones," though it had hot showers. Access to McKay Island in that report was by the "portage special." The same stay had cold, rainy and windy weather on most days, though the guide's choice of sheltered water kept fishing productive. No recurring complaints appear in the reviews. This lodge seems best suited to anglers who put pike and lake trout first, including trophy-minded anglers, and to those who care more about fishing quality than lodging comforts. A father and teenage son found it a good fit, and a long-time repeat visitor remains loyal after decades.

Magazine trip report from a four-day August stay with his teenage son at Oliver Lake Lodge on McKay Island, reached by the "portage special". He describes a gourmet pork tenderloin dinner on arrival, a bare-bones cabin with hot showers, and a lodge decorated with large mounted pike, lake trout and walleye. He says guide and operator Jean-Luc Dube was good at finding calm water despite cold, rainy, windy weather on most days. They fished Oliver and Nokomis lakes, caught pike of 29-35 inches (8-15 lb) in numbers, and landed an 8 lb pike and a 41-inch pike. They tallied about 80 pike and lake trout in half a week. They also had shore lunches of pike and walleye, and saw a pike he estimated at over 50 inches. He concludes that the lodge delivered spectacularly on both quantity and size of fish, and that he and his son intend to become repeat clients.
