Summarized Review Highlights
Guest sentiment toward Frontier Lodge is overwhelmingly positive. Nearly every review gives 5 out of 5 stars, and many come from repeat guests, including some on their second, fourth or fifth trip, or returning after years away. The lodge is on the East Arm of Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories, near Lutsel K'e at the mouth of the Stark River. Guests reach it by a flight of about 50 minutes to an hour from Yellowknife. Several reviewers call it the best fishing trip they have taken. The one critical review (2 out of 5 stars) is an outlier, and a few of the positive reviews also mention minor drawbacks.
Guests most consistently praise the fishing, especially for lake trout. Reviewers report very high catch counts, such as over 100 fish in about 3 days, 155 in three days, and 240 or more in 2.5 days. Fish sizes mentioned include lake trout of roughly 19 to 32 pounds, and one blog writer estimated a lake trout at more than 40 pounds. Pike over 40 inches are mentioned, mainly in early-season trips. Arctic grayling fishing on the Stark River, a short walk from the lodge, is a frequent highlight, particularly for fly anglers, and some guests fished it on their own after guided hours. Guides are described as hardworking, knowledgeable and good with beginners, and several are named. Shore lunches of fresh fish are called a daily highlight. Reviewers also like the food, including fresh cinnamon buns and muffins, lake trout chowder and family-style dinners. The staff and management (Corey, Wayne and Debbie, and others) are described as friendly and responsive. The cabins are described as clean, comfortable, warm and rustic, with a wood-fired sauna and a lounge mentioned. Some guests also saw the northern lights and muskox, and several reported few or no bugs.
Recurring cautions are modest. Several reviewers describe the lodge as basic or rustic rather than luxurious, with one noting tired furniture and finishing and another saying the beds could use replacement. Several also say the trip is expensive, though they felt it was worth the cost. Weather can be cold, with reports of 4C on Canada Day and 50-65°F in early September, and one guest had a day cut short by lightning. The 2-star reviewer was disappointed that the trip included little pike fishing despite the website's claims, and said there are few pike locations and a short window for them. That reviewer also found the lake trout good but not especially numerous or large, and described long boat rides and short fishing days, along with a guide who put in subpar effort. Other reviewers suggest timing: late June to early July for pike, and late July to early August for trophy lake trout. Most of the praise is for lake trout and grayling. The lodge suits lake trout anglers, fly fishers who want grayling, and anglers who are comfortable with basic accommodations. It also works for groups of friends, father-son and multigenerational trips, couples, and first-time fly-in guests, including novices. Pike-focused anglers should book early in the season and check expectations in advance.

We stayed same week as Howard who wrote the review below. All he says is true, but I'll add that Corey the GM of the lodge is super easy to work with, responsive and very attentive to every detail. The resort is missing nothing, the staff from servers to guides are awesome. You will not be disappointed.

Fantastic fishing at Frontier Lodge (and Northern Lights)
My son David and I stayed at Frontier Lodge the first week of September 2024. This is the last trip they offer as the weather after that date probably gets too cold. During our stay, the temperature varied from about 50-65 degrees Fahrenheit, which can be a bit chilly when you're in an aluminum boat driving 20 mph on 50-degree water. Otherwise, the weather was great. On Friday night, which was cloudless, we got to see the Northern Lights, and they were spectacular! The fishing was fantastic. Our guide Larry was excellent. He knew how and where to fish. We targeted Lake Trout and caught many big ones. (My biggest was 20 lbs. caught on a herring live bait rig. We also caught Lake Trout trolling spoons.) Great Slave Lake is essentially "catch and release," but we had shore lunch every day and were able to each take home a small package of smoked Lake Trout. We also caught Arctic Grayling, which were a blast to catch, and which could be caught right near the lodge. The food was excellent - prime rib, pork ribs, chicken, and strip steak for dinners. The fish chowder they served us when we arrived was "out of this world." The accommodations are not luxurious but comfortable and appropriate, given that we are in the "middle of nowhere." I had a hot shower, heat, and a comfortable bed. That's all we needed. Corey, the general manager, was friendly and very responsive, answering all my questions before the trip, and helped make our stay very pleasant. I highly recommend staying here, especially if you like to catch BIG fish!

Frontier Lodge is extra special
Frontier Lodge is much much more than just a place to stay - it's an amazing experience all rolled up in the magic of the North West Territories. My partner and I just spent 3 days there and it was fantastic. The location at the mouth of the Stark River is spectacular. The management and staff make you feel like family from minute 1 - from the manager Corey and his partner Jazmine to the amazing chefs Paulette and Dan to all of the guides and other shore staff. The fresh cinnamon buns and warm muffins when we got there did not hurt. Our cabin was comfortable and warm and had a great little shower. The guides were all friendly and amazing, but we were especially blessed to have Pete Enzoe as our guide. Pete is a local trapper, fisherman and hunter well respected for his skills. It was impressive to watch him build a fire, fillet and cook a lake trout and clean everything up in less than an hour. Pete kept telling us that we would see a Muskox, and sure enough on our second last day, he spotted one. Ask to have Pete as your guide. The fishing was better than expected. The lake trout were big and hungry. They hit hard and fast. We caught over 100 trout in 2 full and 2 1/2 days. The geology and geography of the East Arm of Great Slave Lake is spectacular. Bring your rock hammer and check out the Red Cliff and other areas you will fish. Not a single mosquito or bug bite - not one! A perfect little family-oriented fishing camp in one of the best fresh water fisheries in the world.

A wonder of an expierience
My two sons had been listening to my Yellowknife stories for years - I had worked there for a couple of years in the 70's. So for my 70th birthday they took me to Yellowknife and also to this renowned Eastern Arm of Great Slave Lake fishing Lodge. It was the experience of a lifetime! The fishing was incredible. The Lake Trout are plentiful and huge. On the first day I caught a 21 pound, 38 inch monster. One son caught one almost as large. Another day we went for Pike and both sons caught fish more than 40 inches long. We also caught Arctic Grayling at the nearby river. Our guide was skilled and really cared about us and the fish we were catching and then releasing. The food was good and plentiful - any special requests were provided for with pleasure. The staff were super friendly and pleasant. The Accommodations were in log cabins - each of us had our own room. There was even a wood stove fired sauna. What a wonderful place - we are planning on going back.

Quintessential Trophy Angling
I have been to several fishing lodges over the years and at this point I have very little patience for mediocrity. My experience there was magnificent. The entire staff including Jasmine, Kayla & Paula were genuinely concerned for our every need. The warm Canadian hospitality, spacious cabins and phenomenal food were only matched by the most consistently great fishing I have ever experienced. The guides are hard working, enthusiastic, knowledgeable, brilliant teachers for the novice fishermen among us and will do whatever it takes to put you on fish. My guide, Logan, whose laid back fishing style, phenomenal shore lunches and witty repartee made 9 hours on the lake feel 9 minutes. We casted for pike and trolled for lake trout with great success landing more than 100 in 3.5 days. Another highlight was wading into the river with light tackle to catch artic grayling. Wayne and Debbie's Frontier Lodge is a diamond in the rough and a lodge that I will return to whenever I can.

Trip of a lifetime
Our group of four planned to go here as a "once in a lifetime" trip to celebrate my dad's retirement and by the third day we were discussing when we would be coming back. The service from start to finish was world class. One thing we hadn't counted on, but really enjoyed, was going out in the boats at night to fish after dinner. The food was amazing all week. Fresh cinnamon buns when we arrived and fresh muffins for the boat every morning. The accommodations were great - rustic as you'll see in photos, but very comfortable. The guides worked very hard to ensure we were on fish all week long, regardless of weather conditions. The shore lunches were legendary. Caught so many fish. Bring heavy tackle. And make sure you spend some time fishing grayling in the river. It's a blast. Dress appropriately - on Canada Day it was 4C, felt like -1. Could not recommend a place more highly. Can't wait to go back.

Best fishing trip I've ever been on
After many years of saving and impatiently waiting I finally took the plunge and booked a trip out to the lodge with a friend of mine. Our guide, Corey, was awesome. I fish a lot and all over North America - this was the BEST trip I've ever been on in my life without a doubt. The fishing was amazing, the food and hospitality was so far beyond my expectations. I can't recommend this trip enough to anyone who's on the fence about going..you won't regret it!

Awesome Experience
Because my primary target was pike I booked Frontier for opening week (June 2018). The bays on Great Slave and Stark Lake were cold and holding many big pike. One in particular turned out 4 41+ pike in 2.5 hours. In general I caught a lot of very nice pike, 6 over 41 with the largest being 44. The Lake Trout were just waking up due to the sheet of ice covering most of the big lake. In the end I had several 30+ trout sessions (4 hours am or pm) with the fish averaging over 15 lbs. The biggest and best surprise of the trip was the Graylings. The Stark River is world class Grayling fishing with numerous rapids, pools, eddies. I REALLY REALLY loved fishing in the super clear fast moving water for the Grayling. Overall the experience at Frontier was excellent – Excellent guides / professional shore staff / good food / good communication with the owners. The price tag for a week at Frontier is not cheap but the overall experience is worth the price. If you are looking for big pike, abundant big trout with a chance at a monster, and fun frisky grayling look up Frontier Fishing Lodge.

Fly fishing nirvana
I arrived July 14th, on what looked to be the first day of a huge caddis fly hatch all along the Stark River. Frontier Lodge delivered! Their location is superb and they run a great program for fishermen of all types. As I was focused on fly fishing the proximity to the Stark River and trophy grayling was the main draw. A quick 5-7 min walk got you to the river and the fish were right there. We also ventured out on the lake for some trout and pike fishing. The lake trout were biting hard, some boats were pulling in 50 to 60 fish a day! The food was home style, family fare, enjoyed as a group around two large tables. After dinner the lounge was open till 10pm. This is a smaller Lodge, with a quaint, cozy feel. With superb staff working tirelessly to make your trip as smooth and enjoyable as possible. I did the four night stay, which offered an afternoon, two full days, and a morning of guided fishing. The length of trip just right and left me wanting more!

Fantastic.....again!
Well I did it again! Went back to see Wayne and Deb the end of July and enjoyed it as much as two years ago. This year I had the fantastic guide my friend has had for years. Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday were perfect conditions. The two of us caught and released about 45 lake trout on Tuesday afternoon. Wednesday we were at about 65 fish. Wednesday morning I was lucky enough to latch onto a 32 pound lake trout. The 41" fish pooped me out over about 15 minutes before getting him into the boat. Thursday was windy with a couple blasts of rain. The weather cleared for a shore lunch of fish. Friday was worse, with too much close lightning. Still a great holiday. 155 fish in three days of fishing! So much fun! And next year, barring unforeseen circumstances, I will definitely be back!

"That's something I'll never forget"
Our group of 4 (2 brothers plus the wife and college-age son of one of the brothers) visited Frontier Fishing Lodge for a second time and this trip was even better than the first! Everything went very smoothly. Great weather, fantastic food. And the staff and guides are amazing. One of the best parts of the FFL experience is the variety of fishing available. You can slow troll or jig spoons for huge lake trout, throw topwater lures for big aggressive pike, and wade in a rushing river with spinning gear or a fly rod for monster arctic grayling. This trip, our biggest lake trout was 19 pounds. We also caught a 38-inch pike and numerous grayling up to 21 inches. On our last night, I went out wading in the nearby Stark River by myself. I caught 10 arctic grayling in about an hour. We'll be back!

Frontier Lodge On Great Slave Lake - Mega Report!
It's difficult for me to express just how amazing this trip really was. Scads of trophy sized lake trout, giant sized pike and arctic grayling on the fly. Literally jaw dropping scenery, dancing northern lights, muskox grazing along the shoreline - it was something very, very special!

We're already talking about going back!
This was a fun trip! Great fishing, food, stories, staff, and accommodations. We arrived in Yellowknife on a Friday night and stayed at the Explorer Hotel. The next morning, a lodge representative picked us up at 7:30 AM to take us to the airport. The flight took 50 minutes. The fishing was great! Our party of 3 caught countless lake trout, northern pike, and arctic grayling on our 3-day trip. Our largest fish was a nearly 30 lb lake trout caught by the woman in our group. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful and the guides were top notch. The cabins were clean and comfortable, the food was great, and the internet access was very reliable. All in all, a fantastic trip. It's only been a few days since we returned and we're already talking about going back next year.

Epic Trip!
How to sum up an experience at Frontier Fishing Lodge… EPIC! Spent a week exploring the outer most reaches of human exploration on the East Arm courtesy of some of the most experienced and talented guides floating on water. Then there are the fish. The endless, gigantic, beautiful fish, of varying species and colours to completely amaze the imagination. Some of my favourites were Chef Gee's famous trout chowder, smoked jackfish, baked trout, fried trout, grilled trout and the ultimate trout sashimi. Then there is the endless fly fishing on the Stark River for beautiful Arctic Grayling which never disappointed. At the end of the day we would relax in the wood fired sauna or relive the incredible events of the day by the campfire. This will be an annual trip for myself to escape, unwind and enjoy the true beauty of the Great Canadian North. Thank you again to all the staff, guides and guests who made my experience one I will never forget.

Will Be Back
A friend mentioned Frontier Fishing Lodge and everything about it, so a friend and I decided to give it a go. We flew out on Tuesday August 4 on a 12 seater for a 50 minute flight to the fishing camp near Lutsel K'e. After a hearty bowl of lake trout chowder we were off fishing. We got Roger as our guide, who was born and grew up in the area. Supper is at 7:00 sharp, family bowl style. Service is great. Fished various parts of Great Slave Lake. Three sunny gorgeous days of weather, unbelievably calm, and no bugs. Cannot beat 10 minute old fish on the griddle for shore lunch. With several never getting into the boat I still caught 50 fish. Smallest was 3 pounds with my biggest at 25 pounds. We had an absolutely great time at Frontier Fishing Lodge. We will be back! Worth every penny!

All Time Favourite Trip
I have been going to Canada fishing for over 30 years, mostly in Ontario and Manitoba. I have been blessed to have gone to some very nice fishing lodges, almost all fly ins, but I rank my trip to Frontier Lodge as one of my all-time favourite. I went to Frontier by myself and the staff at the Lodge, starting with management, went out of their way to make me comfortable, including my own cabin and a handpicked guide based upon what I was looking for. Food was great! The fishing was FANTASTIC! I have never fished for Lake Trout specifically before and did not know what to expect but starting with day one I caught all the fish I could handle. The management staff and crew at Frontier Lodge really know what they're doing and I can't wait to return. This was an excellent trip, five stars all the way.

Return Visits Tell All
I went to Frontier Fishing Lodge almost 30 years ago for the first time. After some life changing events I decided to return in 2013, treated my son-in-law, and it was more than I had remembered. I went back again in 2014 and am booked for 2015. The fishing lodge is as it should be, overall basic but beyond comfortable. The addition of the Lounge is great for socializing in the evening. The staff are very friendly and down to earth. The Frontier Lodge, the Lake Trout and Grayling fishing are world class. Everyone should experience this part of the world even if you are not a fisherman.

Can't Wait To Go Back
Best fishing I've ever done in a perfect remote location! The cabins are clean and adequate however, the beds could use replacement. The staff and owners were great and we couldn't have asked for a better guide. You could really tell he has true passion for his job and loves the outdoors. The shore lunches they prepared were something we looked forward to everyday. The food at the lodge was also amazing! Fresh baked buns everyday and a wide variety of meals. I really enjoyed relaxing on the porch overlooking the lake after a great day of fishing. I can't wait to go back!

Unbelievable experience
I went to this lodge with my Dad, brother, and grandpa, and my experience was incredible. We caught over 240 fish in 2 and a half a day and they were all huge! If you walked for a couple minutes down the bank by the lodge, there was some incredible fly fishing, I had grayling swimming around my feet and a couple jumping out of the water inches away from me. The cook they have out there is also amazing, you get to have great meals everyday and a really good shorelunch made from freshly caught fish. Overall, this place is fantastic and I would recommend it to anyone, even people who haven't fished

"Four Trips and counting"
My son and I have gone to Frontier Fishing Lodge four times. Every year it just got better and better. Our primary target fish was the Lake Trout and lots of them, over 350 caught and released on one trip. The guide will make or brake a trip and our guide was good. The cabins were old but they were clean and comfortable. The food was good and lots of it. Debbie, Wayne and the shore staff did everything they could to make your stay a memorable one. If you want trophy lake trout, go the end of July or first of August. If you want trophy pike go end of June or first of July. Frontier Lodge is not a five star resort it is a five fishing camp. Yes we are going back for number five.

My wife and I spend four of the best of our lifes at Frontier. The whole experience was all you could asked for, food, fishing, great north country, staff and guides. The cost seems high but once you see what is all involved, you understand why. It is not 10 star but if you like and want to fish this the place to go to. I keep thinking about booking again. Thanks Wayne and Debbie for a trip we will not forget. Jim and Lynne

Lake Trout Heaven
My wife gave me a four day trip to wayne and Debbie's frontier fishing lodge as a birthday present. We found the entire experience wonderful. The arrangements for flying from Yellowknife were clear. The information on the web site was accurate and helpful and the stay was great. We caught and released over 200 lake trout, northern pike and arctic graylings fishing about 8 hours a day. Each day we caught a medium sized lake trout for a shore lunch of fish cooked over an open fire. Breakfast and supper were provided by the chef and were home styled meals served at family tables with other guests. Our guide Mike from Montreal was helpful and patient. Debbie looked all our needs including lending her own raincoat to my wife. It is not cheap, but for me it was a once in a lifetime experience that i will not forget.

Not as Advertised
While I did experience some very good fishing on my trip, my experience with Frontier Fishing Lodge was far from what I expected. This was due to a combination of a guide that put in a very subpar effort, combined with being mislead by their website. In particular the pike fishing, they advertise the area as being "home to an abundance of northern pike and offer great sport all season long". In a 5.5 day trip where I wanted a mixture of various types of fishing with a large emphasis on pike fishing, I only got one full day of pike fishing, along with 2 hours one morning and an hour on another afternoon. The pike fishing when I experienced it was incredible, however there are very few pike locations available to the lodge, and the window of opportunity is very short. The lake trout fishing was relatively good with a good average size but not crazy numbers and very few large fish. The grayling fishing was excellent however. Of all the lodges I've been to, Frontier has the longest boat rides and shortest fishing days (luckily there is DIY grayling fishing available after the guided hours). I believe that this lodge has potential based on its location, however it did not live up to its potential while I was there.

Great fishing, nice folks
I gave this resort 5 stars because I went there to fish, and in that I was extremely satisfied. The accommodation and food are not fancy. The cabins are a bit rustic, and appointed with fairly tired furniture and finishing. The food ample and good but not fantastic. The setting is nice, pretty wild and isolated. The staff are excellent and the fishing guides are very capable. My girlfriend accompanied me, not much of a fisherwoman, and she caught 17 nice sized lake trout in one day. None of our 4 person party was skunked in any of the mornings or afternoons we fished. The other guests raved about the grayling fishing which any fly fisherman would enjoy. Big northern pike in that lake too. Its pretty much all catch and release but you can take a fish home if you want. The shore lunch features your fresh catch though, and the fried trout was absolutely wonderful. I think the price is a good value, I recommend at least a 4 night stay.
