Overview

Air Tamarac is a family-operated outfitter based in Clova, Quebec, specializing in fly-in sport fishing and moose hunting by seaplane. Founded in 1968 by Jacques R. Bérubé, the operation was acquired by Éliane Bédard and Jean Blanchard in 1994, and in 2024 Charlotte Morrissette, Louis Blanchard, and Robin Blanchard joined as co-owners. The outfitter operates 24 cabins spread across three main outfitting territories: Lake Hébert (including Lake Charlotte) in the Eeyou Istchee Baie-James territory, Lake Sauterelle in Haute-Mauricie, and Gouin Reservoir (including Lake Angèle). All destinations are accessible exclusively by seaplane.

All fishing and hunting territories are reached by floatplane from the primary base at Clova or from a second base at Sainte-Anne-du-Lac. The outfitter operates its own fleet of seaplanes and also offers air taxi services. Air Tamarac has been a member of the Quebec Outfitters Federation for over 30 years.

Established: 1968

Best for: Anglers targeting walleye and northern pike in remote self-guided fly-in camps, as well as groups seeking brook trout fishing or combination fishing and moose hunting packages.
Best time: The fishing season runs from approximately late May through mid-October, with walleye and pike fishing available throughout; brook trout fishing at Lake Sauterelle follows Quebec open-water season timing.

The Fishing

Air Tamarac offers fly-in fishing for walleye, northern pike, and native brook trout. The Gouin Reservoir is known for trophy northern pike, while Lake Hébert — located about 76 miles north of the Clova base and accessible only by a 45-minute seaplane flight — holds large quantities of walleye under exclusive fishing rights. Lake Charlotte, also on the Lake Hébert exclusive territory, is operated as a strict catch-and-release lake for walleye and pike. The Lake Sauterelle territory, north of Sainte-Anne-du-Lac, provides brook trout fishing on a deep, multi-lake system with several satellite lakes accessible by trail.

Guests fish from aluminum boats — Princecraft Yukon or Lund SSV 16 models — powered by Mercury 4-stroke outboard motors. Boats, motors, fuel, and equipment are included in packages. The outfitter promotes catch-and-release practices and enforces size-slot regulations on most of its territories to maintain fish populations. Some satellite lakes around the Sauterelle and Gouin territories are accessible by short hiking trails for additional brook trout and pike fishing.

Accommodations

Air Tamarac operates 24 cabins distributed across its territories, all accessible only by seaplane. Cabins range from recently modernized multi-bedroom units with solar energy, indoor showers, and toilets to log home-style cottages such as the fully solar-powered cabin at Lake Charlotte, which accommodates two to five people. Most cabins have two enclosed bedrooms and capacity for four to six guests. At Lake Hébert, five cabins are situated on an island in the southern part of the lake and two are located at the north end; caretaker couples are on-site at several locations. All packages are European plan, meaning guests bring their own food and personal belongings. A 110-pound per-person luggage limit applies on seaplane departures from Clova.
