Clova, Quebec
Family-run outfitter operating 14 fly-in fishing camps on the Gouin Reservoir and private lakes in northern Quebec.
Caesar's North Camps is a family-operated fly-in fishing outfitter based in the village of Clova, Quebec, in the northern wilderness of the province. The operation runs 14 distinct camp locations situated on the Gouin Reservoir, private lakes, and a river system. The current business was re-established by the original founding family after the earlier Caesar's Lodge was closed in spring 2011, with the new entity operated in partnership with pilot Jean Lou Simard.
The outfitter has roots going back over 45 years and reports that more than 80 percent of its guests are repeat customers. Fishing and hunting packages are both offered. Guests travel to camps exclusively by seaplane, with the staging point located in Clova.
The 14 camp locations offer two broad types of fishing settings. Gouin Reservoir locations are known for producing large quantities of walleye and northern pike, and guests at those camps may keep a quota of fish to take home. The private lake locations operate on a catch-and-release basis, with anglers permitted to eat fish while at the cabin. Species targeted across all locations include walleye and northern pike, with perch also noted at some locations. Each camp location has its own exclusive use by a single party, and boats with motors ranging from 4 hp to 9.9 hp are provided to suit the size of the water being fished. Some locations, such as the Paskagama River, offer a river-based fishing package. Spring, roughly late May through July, is noted as a particularly productive period for walleye and pike.
Each of the 14 camp locations features a self-catering cabin that guests occupy exclusively. Cabins are equipped with a fully furnished kitchen with running water, a dining area, a bathroom with shower and flush toilet, propane lights, a propane stove and oven, a propane refrigerator and freezer, a wood-burning stove with pre-cut firewood for heat, a lakefront balcony, a portable barbecue, and a fish cleaning station with running water. Meals are not provided; guests cook for themselves using the supplied equipment. Some locations, such as Little Benny and Anita's cabin, are supplied with a satellite phone given their remoteness.
Guests drive to the village of Clova, Quebec, which is reached via Parent, Quebec. The drive from the nearest larger centre, Mont-Laurier, involves a dirt road section between Mont St-Michel and Clova. For those who want to avoid the unpaved road, a seaplane connection is available from the Ste-Anne du Lac Seaplane Base, located about 40 minutes from Mont-Laurier, with flights going directly to Clova or in some cases directly to a camp. From Clova, all guests travel to their individual camp locations by seaplane. Basic services in Clova include a restaurant, gas station, bar, and a small auberge.
