Winnipeg, Manitoba
Family-run fly-in outfitter operating a main lodge, mini-lodge, and multiple outpost camps on the North Seal River watershed in northern Manitoba.
Gangler's North Seal River Lodge is a fly-in-only fishing and wilderness operation based on Egenolf Lake in the sub-arctic region of northern Manitoba, roughly 240 miles from the nearest road. The Gangler family has been outfitting in northern Manitoba since 1985, and the North Seal River Lodge itself opened in 1998 as the operation's third developed fishery. The main lodge, a mini-lodge, and several outpost camps together provide access to an exclusive allocation spanning over 6,000,000 acres, encompassing 12 river systems, more than 100 lakes, and the North Seal River.
The operation is run as a small, limited-capacity lodge, hosting a maximum of 26 guests per week at the main lodge, with a staff-to-guest ratio of 1:1. Outpost camps accommodate up to 8 guests each and offer a more self-directed experience on more remote waters. The fishery is managed under a strict catch-and-release policy, and provincial regulations require the use of barbless hooks throughout.
Established: 1985
The North Seal watershed is one of the few places in Canada where all four species of the Canadian Grand Slam — northern pike, lake trout, walleye, and arctic grayling — can be pursued in a single trip, and the fishery also holds whitefish and burbot. Anglers fish from custom-built 16.5- and 18-foot boats outfitted with 25- to 40-horsepower Yamaha four-stroke outboard motors and depth finders, typically two anglers per boat with one guide. Up to nine hours of guided fishing are available per day, and fly-outs to more than 30 lakes — including two complimentary portage lakes — extend access across the watershed. Both fly-fishing and conventional spinning or baitcasting are accommodated; loaner rods and reels for all methods are available, and a complimentary fly-tying table is on site. Shore lunches are prepared by Indigenous guides on the water.
Northern pike are accessible across a wide range of lakes and are targeted on both fly and conventional gear. Lake trout are present throughout the system and move into shallow water in fall. Walleye are found in numbers across many of the lakes, and arctic grayling are pursued primarily in river systems, often on the fly. The fishery sees very low angling pressure due to its remoteness and the lodge's limited guest capacity.
The main lodge on Egenolf Lake features nine separate private log cabins — five two-person cabins and four four-person cabins, each with two private bedrooms and one private bathroom per two guests. Cabins include a separate living room, electric heating, TV with DVD player, screened porch, and daily housekeeping service. Free Starlink internet is available at the main lodge. The 4,200-square-foot main lodge building offers a full-service bar and lounge with a pool table, ping-pong, and a large outdoor deck and firepit. All meals are included: breakfast, lunch (shore lunch prepared by guides), and dinner served by wait staff, with Northern Manitoba-inspired cuisine prepared fresh by a chef. Complimentary soft drinks and wine are included with dinner, and complimentary coffee is delivered to each cabin at 6:45 a.m. Outpost camps offer more rustic but still well-equipped accommodations for groups of up to eight.
Guests stage in Winnipeg, where expediting services are included in the package. A charter flight — typically on an ATR-72 aircraft — travels approximately 640 air miles north and lands on the lodge's private 5,400-foot airstrip directly behind the main lodge; the flight takes roughly two to two-and-a-half hours. The lodge is approximately 240 miles from the nearest road and has no road access. Guests staying at outpost camps take an additional short floatplane transfer from the main lodge to their respective camp.
