Stony Rapids, Saskatchewan
Small fly-in fishing lodge on Misaw Lake in far northeastern Saskatchewan, targeting trophy northern pike, lake trout, and Arctic grayling.
Misaw Lake Lodge is a small, guided fly-in fishing operation situated on Misaw Lake in the far northeastern corner of Saskatchewan, approximately 3 kilometres south of the Northwest Territories border. The name Misaw comes from the Cree word meaning "it is big." The lodge is owned and operated by Steve and Jessica Doerksen, who took over the property in 2018 and have since undertaken ongoing renovations and upgrades to facilities and equipment.
The lodge accommodates a maximum of 16 guests at one time, though management targets roughly 8 guests per session to keep fishing pressure low. Guests have exclusive access to 16 lakes and rivers spread across an allocation covering over 3,500 square miles of northeastern Saskatchewan, some of which have reportedly seen little or no sport fishing pressure. The operation offers fully guided 4-day and 6-day fishing packages during its mid-June to mid-September season.
Established: 2018
The primary target species at Misaw Lake Lodge are northern pike, lake trout, and Arctic grayling. Northern pike in the 38-inch-plus range are common, with many fish caught in the 40 to 46-inch range. Lake trout typically run 15 to 30 pounds, with larger individuals exceeding 40 pounds. Arctic grayling reach up to 20 inches in length. Fishing pressure across the allocation is kept deliberately low, and the lodge enforces strict catch-and-release policies along with a single barbless hook per lure requirement and prohibitions on vertical holds during photos.
Guided fishing takes place on Misaw Lake itself as well as the Schwandt River and two portage lakes accessible on foot. Optional day fly-outs to any of 15 additional remote lakes are available for guests who want to reach more isolated water. Guided shore lunches, often featuring the day's catch, are a standard part of the daily routine.
Guests stay in private cabins that each include a private bathroom and two or three beds per room. Cabins are cleaned daily and fresh towels are provided. Propane heaters or wood stoves supply heat during cooler periods, while ceiling fans are available during warmer summer months. The main lodge is a renovated log building with trophy mounts, a lounge area with a pool table and dartboard, and a large deck overlooking Misaw Lake. Three home-cooked meals are served daily, including a made-to-order breakfast on arrival, a guide-prepared shore lunch, and an evening meal preceded by appetizers in the main lodge. Internet service is available in the main lodge. Rod, reel, and tackle use is included in packages, as are 18-foot Alumarine Pro Guide boats with fish finders, nets, and safety equipment.
Guests travel to Misaw Lake Lodge via a private charter flight originating in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The round-trip flight takes approximately 3.5 to 4 hours including a fuel stop, and lands on the lodge's own 4,500-foot private airstrip. An expeditor meets guests at the Grand Winnipeg Airport Hotel on departure day and accompanies them to the charter terminal. The lodge sits roughly 1,280 kilometres northwest of the Canada-U.S. border and approximately 3 kilometres south of the Saskatchewan-Northwest Territories boundary, making it one of the most remote fishing destinations in the province.
