Overview

Northern Rockies Adventures is a family-owned operation based at Muncho Lake, British Columbia, at Mile 462 of the Alaska Highway. It is run by the Schildknecht family — founders Urs and Marianne, who immigrated from Switzerland and began flying and guiding in the region in 1981, and their sons Daniel and Michael, who now co-manage the business. The operation offers guided fly-in fishing trips, fly-in outpost cabin packages, canoe expeditions, Northern Lights tours, and Nahanni National Park flightseeing tours, all departing from the Northern Rockies Lodge on Muncho Lake.

The fishing territory covers more than 50,000 square miles of the Muskwa-Kechika wilderness and adjacent provincial parks, accessible only by floatplane. The lodge property itself sits within Muncho Lake Provincial Park and includes lakeshore chalets, lodge rooms, a fully licensed dining room, sauna, hot tub, and a floatplane dock. Urs Schildknecht purchased the original lodge on the property in 1988 and built the current 14,000-square-foot Northern Rockies Lodge in 1995.

The Fishing

Guided fly-in fishing day trips depart daily from the floatplane dock at Northern Rockies Lodge and access more than 70 remote lakes, rivers, and streams that are reachable only by floatplane. The operation targets six wild native freshwater species: Rainbow Trout, Northern Pike, Arctic Grayling, Bull Trout (Dolly Varden), Lake Trout, and Walleye. The fishing territory straddles both the Arctic and Pacific watersheds. Guests can fly-cast or spincast depending on preference and species; wading rivers for Rainbow Trout, casting streamers for Bull Trout on the swing, and targeting Pike from boats on backcountry lakes are all common outings. Guided packages offer four or six fly-out days within a seven-night stay, with a maximum guide-to-guest ratio of 1:4. Fishing rods, flies, lures, and fishing licenses are included in full-package bookings.

The outpost cabin program puts guests at one of three remote fly-in cabins — including locations on Netson Lake and in Dune Za Keyih Provincial Park — for self-guided multi-day trips. Outpost cabin packages include boats, outboard motors, and canoes. Lake trout fishing is strongest just after ice-out through early July; Rainbow Trout and Arctic Grayling fishing peaks from July through early September; and Bull Trout streamer fishing is considered best in August.

Accommodations

Fishing package guests are housed in private lakeshore chalets on the shore of Muncho Lake, steps from the floatplane dock. The chalets feature queen beds with duvets, a breakfast nook, lakeside balcony, coffee maker, bar fridge, Wi-Fi, television, and a modern en-suite bathroom with tub and shower. A larger Cedarhouse chalet is available for groups of three to four. Lodge rooms are also available and include floor-to-ceiling windows with lake and mountain views, a log-cabin atmosphere, satellite TV, Wi-Fi, and en-suite bathrooms. All-inclusive fishing guests dine in the private Bushpilot's Lounge within the main lodge, where chefs prepare multi-course meals drawing on North American and European, including Swiss, culinary traditions. Resort amenities include a sauna and hot tub. The fly-in outpost cabins sleep up to six guests in bunk rooms and a loft, and are equipped with a propane cooktop, wood stove, outdoor barbecue, solar panels, and a backup generator.

Getting There

Full package guests fly from Pitt Meadows Regional Airport near Vancouver on a private charter aircraft — a King Air 300 — approximately two hours north to Fort Nelson Regional Airport in northeastern British Columbia. From Fort Nelson, a lodge shuttle van transports guests roughly three hours west along the Alaska Highway to the Northern Rockies Lodge at Muncho Lake. Guests who are already driving the Alaska Highway can also arrange standalone fly-in fishing day trips directly from the lodge. All backcountry fishing destinations are then reached by floatplane — a Turbine Otter or Cessna 208 Caravan — departing from the lodge's dock on Muncho Lake.
