Overview

Pourvoirie Mabec (Mabec Outfitters) operates on Lac Manitou Sud, approximately 85 km (53 miles) northeast of Sept-Îles and 900 km (560 miles) from Montreal, in the Duplessis region of Quebec's Côte-Nord. The territory covers more than 105 sq. km (52 sq. miles) of lakes, rivers, forested hills, and mountains along the Manitou River watershed, which feeds into Lakes Canot, Brézel, and Éudistes. The outfitter has been in operation for over thirty years and limits groups to a maximum of 12 guests at a time.

Two distinct fishing packages are offered: a VIP American Plan based at the main lodge on Lake Manitou, which is fully guided and includes all meals; and a self-guided European Plan based at the outpost camps on Lakes Brézel and Éudistes, where guests manage their own cooking and daily activities. The territory is operated under exclusive rights on the Côte-Nord.

Best for: Anglers focused on trophy brook trout who want either a fully guided, full-service American Plan experience or a self-guided European Plan stay in a remote Quebec wilderness setting.

The Fishing

Mabec Outfitters is focused primarily on brook trout (speckled trout / omble de fontaine), with the lakes and river system also holding Quebec red trout. Fish in these waters average approximately 1 kg (2 pounds), and the outfitter references a "5 pounds+ Club" for larger catches. Fishing methods that work on the territory include trolling, spooning, spinning, and fly fishing. The recommended fly fishing setup is a 7.5 to 8-foot rod with floating or sinking-tip line. On the American Plan, professional guides lead guests to fishing locations on the water; on the European Plan, clients operate the boats themselves. A daily catch limit of five fish per person applies, with only one fish allowed at 3 pounds or more, and catch-and-release is encouraged. All lures must carry a single hook only.

The Bonjour Québec directory also lists Arctic char among the species present on the territory, in addition to brook trout.

Accommodations

The main camp on Lake Manitou offers private bedrooms with full bathrooms, all bedding, a fully equipped cabin with hot and cold running water, and a main lodge with a dining room, fireplace, bar, satellite TV, and WiFi. Under the VIP American Plan, a chef prepares breakfast each morning, packed lunches for fishing trips, and dinner each evening in the dining room. The outpost camps at Lakes Brézel and Éudistes operate under the European Plan, where guests stay in fully equipped cabins with hot and cold running water and are responsible for their own provisions and meals. A watchman is stationed at Lake Éudistes to oversee guest safety and camp rules. The facility also features a modern telecommunications system allowing worldwide calling.

Getting There

The outfitter is accessible only by air. Guests drive or fly to Sept-Îles, then depart from the Mustang Helicopters Inc. base at 1970 Decoste, Sept-Îles.
