Overview

Aylmer Lake Lodge is a remote fly-in fishing lodge on Aylmer Lake in the Northwest Territories. The lodge sits on Rocknest Bay, south of the Arctic Circle, where the tree line ends. It operates under the name Canadian Wildlife Adventures and is run by Patti and Kevin McNeil.

The operation is a single lodge. Guests fly by float plane from Yellowknife, and the lodge sells all-inclusive fishing packages built around lake trout and Arctic grayling.

Besides fishing, the lodge offers Aurora Borealis tours, wildlife viewing, hunting and canoeing trips.

Best for: Anglers who want lake trout and Arctic grayling in a remote barrenlands setting, with wildlife viewing, aurora tours and canoeing as extras.
Best time: Summer, when the cold water keeps lake trout near the top of the water column and within reach of casting and fly gear.

The Fishing

Lake trout are the main species at Aylmer Lake Lodge, with Arctic grayling the second target. The lodge lists a lake trout record of 58 pounds and an average of 15 to 25 pounds. Guests can also fish for grayling in rapids with dry flies, or with light and ultralight spinning gear.

The lodge uses two main methods for lake trout, trolling and jigging, and recommends trolling as the most productive. Fly fishing is also an option. The water stays cold through the summer, which keeps the fish near the top of the water column. Guides fish shoals and reefs, and use their graphs to find pinch points where bait gathers.

Baits named by the lodge include Eppinger Husky spoons, Little Cleos, T-60s, Mepps in-line spinners, Williams Wobbler spoons and J-Plugs. Jigging lures include tubes, swimbaits, blade baits and Swedish Pimple spoons. Guest rates are based on two guests per guide.

Accommodations

Guests stay in furnished cabins, and each cabin sleeps four. Each cabin has comfortable beds, thermostatically controlled heating and a sitting area. Wi-Fi is available in the cabins and in the main lodge. The lodge limits occupancy to 20 guests per week.

Breakfast and dinner are served at the lodge, and lunch is a shore lunch packed for the day on the water. The lodge describes the breakfasts and dinners as hearty and home cooked. Breakfast is at 7:00 am and supper at 6:30 pm in the Tundra Room. The packages are all-inclusive.

Summarized Review Highlights

Guests describe Aylmer Lake Lodge in very positive terms. Nearly every review gives 5 out of 5 stars, and one gives 4. Many call it a "trip of a lifetime," and a number say they hope to return. A guide with 19 years of experience on lake trout waters across northern Canada said he had not seen more consistent or spectacular fishing. Another reviewer called it one of his favorite places to fish in the world.

Reviewers consistently praise the lake trout fishing, citing numbers, size, and the chance at a "monster." One father-and-son pair reported dozens of fish in the 10-20 lb class, at least a dozen between 20 and 30 lb, and five over 30 lb in four days, many on fly rods. Other guests mention personal-best fish, including a 31 lb trout, and arctic grayling. One angler was surprised to catch lakers on a spoon. Guests also like the lodge itself, describing the cabins as comfortable, clean, warm and dry, and one called it the best accommodation they had had in the tundra. The food and chef (Frances is named) are called excellent or top notch. Guides, including Nate/Nathan, and the hosts Kevin and Patti McNeil are described as hardworking, accommodating, and hospitable, with a family-lodge feel. Several reviewers mention the scenery and remoteness, and one said they enjoyed the camaraderie. One review notes that Kevin and Patti honored a pandemic-delayed booking at no extra cost.

Complaints are almost absent. The only caveat comes from the 4-star review, where a group faced tough weather and the fishing was on and off. That reviewer still thought the lake has great potential for 50 lb-plus fish. This is a remote Arctic location, so weather can affect fishing. The reviews suggest the lodge suits trophy lake trout anglers, fly-rod anglers, father-son and group trips, and first-time visitors to the Northwest Territories or the Arctic who want comfortable lodging in a remote setting. One guest said the trip felt more like a vacation than a fishing trip.

Booked a trip with Aylmer Lake Lodge in June 2020 for July 2021; a Canada travel ban was still in place, and Kevin and Patti honored the booking until July 2022 at no extra cost. Lake trout fishing was unbelievable, way past expectations for me and my son. We both caught our personal best lake trout on a fly rod: dozens in the 10-20 lb class, at least a dozen between 20-30 lb, and 5 over 30 lb in 4 days. The lodge is very comfortable with great vistas, the food was excellent, and Kevin and Patti run an extremely remote lodge like a family lodge experience. I highly recommend Aylmer Lake Lodge.

Great water. Our group had some tough weather conditions so fishing was on and off. My feeling is that Aylmer Lake has great potential and many 50 pound plus fish will be caught. Look forward to coming back – great staff!

I have fished for lakers in northern Manitoba, but never in NWT. The fishing and accommodations were phenomenal. Never thought I would have caught lakers from a spoon. Food at the lodge was top notch. Can't wait to come back!

My son and I took a trip up to Aylmer Lake Lodge this summer. If you are looking for a remote fly in fishing experience in one of the most beautiful places on Earth and fish pristine waters for huge lake trout and arctic grayling, then I highly recommend this lodge for a trip of a lifetime.

Getting There

Guests travel to Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, and fly from there to the lodge by float plane. Scheduled airline service reaches Yellowknife daily, and the lodge names Air Canada Jazz, First Air, WestJet and Canadian North. It advises guests to arrive in Yellowknife a day before the fly-out date.

On fly-in day, guests leave their Yellowknife hotel for the float plane base between 2:00 and 3:00 pm and reach the lodge between 4:00 and 5:00 pm. The normal flight time is 1 3/4 hours. The plane lands on Rocknest Bay and taxis to the dock below the lodge. The return flight leaves the lodge later in the afternoon, so guests stay a night in Yellowknife and fly home the next day.
