Overview

Langara Island Lodge is an all-inclusive fly-in fishing lodge on Langara Island, at the northern end of Haida Gwaii, British Columbia. It sells fully guided saltwater trips for salmon and halibut, with packages sized for couples, families, groups of friends and corporate retreats.

The property has three places to stay: Chinook Lodge, Eagle Lodge and Raven Cottage. Together they hold 40 guests per trip. Each group stays in its own lodge or cottage, from six guests up to twenty-two.

Packages cover flights, guided fishing, meals, accommodation and fish packaging. The lodge reports a guest return rate of over 90 percent.

Best for: Groups wanting fully guided, light-tackle saltwater salmon and halibut fishing with private lodging, from couples and families to corporate groups of up to 40.
Best time: The lodge says no dates are clearly better: June is strong for chinook with long days, late August into September favours big coho, and halibut fishing is steady all season.

Highlights

Fully guided on a private boat
Fishing within 5 to 15 minutes
17 guide boats at 25 feet
Chinook, coho, halibut and lingcod
Three private lodging options
Charter flights from Vancouver included
Fishing on arrival and departure days
Spa, hot tubs and sauna on site

The Fishing

Langara Island Lodge fishes the saltwater around Langara and Graham Islands for chinook (king) and coho (silver) salmon, plus halibut, lingcod and other bottom fish. Early season fishing centres on chinook. Mid to late summer adds coho. Halibut and bottom fishing is steady from late May through the season.

The lodge says it still fishes weight and bait on light tackle in shallow water close to shore, with no downriggers or offshore trolling. Each boat fishes four rods. The lodge calls the area the best mooching water in British Columbia. It reports more than 30 fishing spots within a 15-minute run, and most bottom fishing is within 15 to 20 minutes.

Packages are fully guided, with a private boat for each group. The lodge runs 17 fully equipped 25-foot Ironwood guide boats, each with a bathroom on board. Packages include marine clothing, fishing equipment and fishing licences. Fishing is scheduled on both arrival and departure days. The salmon limit is generally eight in total, with no more than four chinook, and limits are set by Fisheries and Oceans Canada and can change.

Accommodations

Chinook Lodge is the largest building, on the cliffs above the open Pacific. It has eleven guest rooms, each with two beds and an ensuite bathroom. It also has two levels of lounge space, a stone fireplace, a long-table dining area, stocked bars, a games room with a pool table and satellite TV, two outdoor hot tubs and ocean-view decks. It takes up to 22 guests. Starlink internet covers the building.

Eagle Lodge is the newest facility, set high on the island with 360-degree views. It sleeps up to twelve in six rooms with two queen beds each. It has a private kitchen with its own chef, an ocean-view hot tub, dining and lounge areas, a fireplace and a games room with a pool table. In some weeks smaller groups share the lodge.

Raven Cottage is the most private option, with three bedrooms for up to six guests. It has its own living room, dining area and kitchen and looks over Parry Passage. All six spaces must be booked to secure it. Guests of all three lodges can use the Kusgwai Spa, which has a steam room, sauna and workout facility. Meals are West Coast cuisine built around local ingredients, and packages include all meals, drinks and alcohol.

Summarized Review Highlights

Guests overwhelmingly rate Langara Island Lodge as an outstanding, top-tier fishing destination. Nearly every review gives 5 out of 5 stars, and the one 4-star review still calls the stay first class. Many reviewers compare it favorably to other lodges they have visited. Several are repeat guests, including people on their 4th visit or 4th year in a row, and others say they plan to return. The lodge is described as a "bucket list" destination and as run like a "fine tuned machine," from the Vancouver transfers and helicopter flight in to departure.

Service and staff come up most often. Reviewers describe the lodge staff as friendly, attentive, and quick to handle special requests, and some compare them to a five-star hotel. Guides and boat captains are called knowledgeable, hard-working, and patient. Several reviewers say the guides are good teachers, and beginners say they were catching fish and limiting out within a day or two. Food is also praised in nearly every review, with gourmet multi-course dinners and plentiful lunches. Guests also mention the scenery and wildlife, the helicopter arrival, the spa and hot tub, the well-stocked cottages, and the boats, including private bathrooms on board. Many guests report strong catches of salmon, halibut, and ling cod, including limits.

Complaints are rare. The one lukewarm account describes cold, windy, rainy weather and fishing that was only average over 12-hour days. That guest still caught Chinook, ling cod, and halibut and called the rest of the trip first class. Practical tips from reviewers are to follow the packing list and dress for cold, wet conditions, to pack light because the lodge provides gear and has a store with thermals and layers, and that gourmet dinners do not come with a dress code. One guest advises confirming with your guide which fish will be kept before leaving the dock. Cell service is limited, which some guests saw as a plus. The lodge suits groups of friends, couples, families, and corporate or business groups, and first-time or inexperienced anglers who want patient instruction. It also suits experienced anglers who want a high-service, fully managed trip.

Top of the Bucket List
I have fished for salmon at many different lodges and, frankly, nothing compares with Langara. The setting is superb, the facility and food exceptional, and the fishing has always been productive. Every step of the trip is perfectly managed and every employee well-trained and a pleasure to deal with.

REVIEW: Langara Island Lodge, Haida Gwaii, British Columbia, Canada
We had an absolutely wonderful time at Langara Island Lodge. While the weather wasn't great, and the fishing was very average, the stay was memorable and we will be back. The booking process was fantastic. Service was the best I have received outside of Asia. It was cold, windy and rainy; we toughed it out with 12 hour days on the water and ended with 4 Chinook, 8 ling cod and 2 halibut. Putting aside the poor weather and OK fishing, everything was first class.

Stayed at the Raven Cottage. Overall it's a 5 Star experience. From the moment you catch the helicopter to the lodge. The staff are extremely friendly. The food was out of this world. The cottage was always fully stocked with snacks and food, as well as amenities like Advil, sunscreen, and hand warmers. The fishing is absolutely out of this world. The two guides we had on this trip were outstanding.

We were a group of four guys from the UK who stayed in Eagle Lodge. We booked through Chromer; pre-booking arrangements were flawless, and the transfers from Vancouver to Masset and on via helicopter were seamless. The lodge, hospitality, food and drink were really top notch. The guides are all very knowledgeable and go out of their way to deliver. We had Stu and Davey, great guys. (Stay: July 2016)

Amazing Level Of Service
If the level of service doesn't bring you back, the food prepared every day will surely set a hook in you. We heard 'Of Course' repeatedly when we had special requests. The views from the lodge or aboard the boats were breathtaking. One note: make sure you have a clear understanding of what fish will be harvested with your guides before they leave the dock. A 'Bucket List' destination for fishermen! (Stay: July 2017)

Just wow
Went on a guys trip to the lodge with fishing in mind, and can honestly say this place is run like a fine tuned machine from the minute we left Vancouver to the time we left again. Everyone was kind, helpful and there for your every want. The 3 guides assigned to us were awesome. My guide Tommy T worked as hard as humanely possible to get us fish. The land staff were as good as I've seen at any 5 star establishment. (Stay: June 2018)

A truly special place made unforgettable by the amazing staff
Langara is a first class experience from start to finish. The scenery, the food, and the fishing are all amazing. Cam was a fantastic guide who got us on the fish. Our group of four limited out on salmon and halibut, and even got a couple bonus ling cod. What really makes Langara special is the hospitality of the girls in the lodge. I can't wait for my next trip.

Outstanding place to fish and be treated incredibly well
I am not an experienced fisherman at the least, but within an hour I knew what I was doing, and over the next couple of days I limited out on some big salmon. The time in the lodge with friends was great. The food was top shelf. They were happy to bring us sangrias in the hot tub, or make us old fashioneds while we rested in front of the fire. The fishing is great. (Stay: August 2023, traveled with family)

The best fishing Lodge in BC
I've fished Haida Gwaii for the last 14 years. This was our first time at Langara Island Lodge, but it won't be our last. I have absolutely nothing negative to say. Our hostess, Vicky, and her partners made us feel welcome. The boats and equipment were first-rate, and our guide, Stu, was the best guide I have ever fished with. The manager appears to have empowered his staff to do their jobs. An overall amazing experience! (Stay: August 2024)

Langara Island Lodge experience from a woman's perspective.
There's nothing like the raw beauty of Langara Island Fishing Lodge. Very little cell service, no stress. The service is truly next level, the staff makes you feel like family, the meals are five-star multi-course, and the fishing guides are knowledgeable, patient and passionate. The massage at the spa was fantastic, and the store has good thermals and layers. I stayed in the Eagles lodge and it was very conveniently located. As a female I did not know if this would be my type of trip, but I am very glad I tried it. Will do again. (Stay: June 2025)

Getting There

Guests check in at the South Terminal of Vancouver International Airport and board the lodge's private charter flight to Masset, a small town near the lodge. The flight takes about 1.5 hours. At Masset a lodge representative meets guests, who then take a 15-minute helicopter flight to Langara Island. There is no runway on the island itself.

Helicopters usually reach the lodge between about 1:00 and 1:30 PM. Luggage goes straight to the rooms, and a welcome lunch is followed by fishing that afternoon. Without weather delays, the return charter lands in Vancouver around 4:30 PM. Return charter flights and the helicopter transfer are included in package pricing. Guests flying their own plane can arrange to land at Masset.
