Overview

Barber's Resort is a small, locally owned and operated tourist resort situated in Minaki, Northwestern Ontario, on the Winnipeg River system. The property covers 30 acres with 1,800 feet of shoreline and nine lakefront cabins. The resort has been providing fishing and hospitality since 1981.

In addition to the main resort, Barber's operates the Conifer Lake Outpost, a fly-in fishing camp located approximately 49 miles northeast of Minaki. The Barber family owns and operates both properties. Anglers at the main resort have access to several lakes in the area, including Gunn Lake, Big Sand Lake, Little Sand Lake, Pistol Lake, and Roughrock Lake. Fall whitetail deer hunting is also offered in the surrounding forests.

Best time: The resort operates seasonally; walleye fishing is productive throughout the open-water season, while northern pike fishing is best in early and late season.

The Fishing

The Winnipeg River system and connected lakes offer fishing for walleye, northern pike, muskie, smallmouth bass, and perch. Walleye are available throughout the season, while pike are particularly active in early and late season. Muskie fishing is available in parts of the river system, with fish commonly reaching 40 inches or more.

The fly-in Conifer Lake Outpost provides a separate multi-species fishery where guests can target walleye, smallmouth bass, lake trout, and northern pike all on one lake. Three boats and motors are included at the outpost, and gas, propane, life preservers, nets, and bait buckets are provided on site.

Accommodations

The main resort offers nine lakefront housekeeping cabins in two-, three-, and four-bedroom configurations, all described as modern and comfortable. Three- and four-bedroom cabins have two bathrooms. Each cabin is fully outfitted for self-catering with a refrigerator, deep freezer, microwave, bed linens, towels, satellite TV, and WiFi. All cabins have air conditioning, a private deck with a propane barbecue, and a separate private boat dock on the Winnipeg River. The Conifer Lake Outpost cabin accommodates up to six persons and includes running water, showers, a four-burner stove with oven, refrigerators, a propane barbecue, fish cooker, wood heater, and cooking utensils.

Getting There

Barber's Resort is a drive-to property located in the community of Minaki, roughly 45 minutes north of Kenora via Highway 596 off the Kenora bypass (Highway 17A); guests follow signage to the resort on the southern edge of Minaki. The Conifer Lake Outpost is accessible only by floatplane, departing from Minaki, with a per-person weight allowance of 75 lbs for the flight in and out.
