Red Lake, Ontario
Fly-in outfitter operating twelve private outpost cabins on remote lakes north of Red Lake, Ontario, since 1969.
Black Moose Outposts is a fly-in fishing and moose hunting outfitter based in Red Lake, Ontario, operating since 1969. The company runs twelve outpost cabins, each situated on its own private lake in the remote wilderness north of Red Lake. Cabins span ten different lakes, with multiple portage options available for additional exploration.
The operation offers three tiers of accommodation — Luxury, Comfort, and Authentic — to suit varying preferences. Black Moose Outposts also operates its own floatplane fleet and airline, flying guests and supplies throughout the region from its float base in Red Lake. The season runs from May through October, covering fishing from mid-May to mid-September and moose hunting from mid-September to mid-October.
Established: 1969
The lakes north of Red Lake hold walleye, northern pike, and lake trout. Because the outpost lakes are accessible only by floatplane, they receive very little fishing pressure, and the area is known for producing trophy-sized fish. Each cabin comes with one aluminum boat with swivel seats and outboard motor for every two guests, and gasoline use is unlimited and included in the package price. Cabin packages include an Ontario Outdoors Card and an 8-day conservation fishing license. Black Moose Outposts promotes catch-and-release fishing, though guests may opt to add a sports fishing license for an additional charge to keep their catch. Guests are encouraged to bring their own tackle; rental gear is available with advance reservation, and live bait is not permitted at the northern camps.
Cabins are divided into three categories. Luxury cabins, such as those at Orono Lake and Critchell Lake, accommodate up to ten guests and include modern amenities such as air conditioning, Starlink Wi-Fi, fully equipped kitchens, multiple bathrooms, laundry facilities, and screened porches. Comfort cabins, designed for up to eight guests, provide hot and cold running water, solar lighting, propane cook stoves, wood stoves, generators, propane grills, and fish cookers. All cabins across all tiers are stocked with pots, pans, dishes, utensils, coffee makers, bedding, and cleaning supplies. Each cabin is reserved exclusively for the booking group, and most cabins are the only structure on their respective lake. Guests receive a Garmin InReach satellite communicator at check-in for communication with the outfitter and with contacts at home. Food and beverages can be pre-ordered before the trip.
