Overview

Boreal Forest Outfitters is based in Nakina, Ontario, in the District of Thunder Bay. The operation is run by Jason, a full-time Nakina resident, and carries on the camps previously operated under the Arctic Watershed Outposts name. The outfitter offers fly-in access to two outpost camps on Kayedon Lake and Melchett Lake, both located north of Nakina in remote boreal Ontario.

In addition to fishing, Boreal Forest Outfitters offers fly-in moose hunting in Wildlife Management Units 17, 16C, and 18A. The operation is self-guided and housekeeping style, meaning guests manage their own meals and daily activities at the outpost cabins.

Best for: Self-guided anglers and small groups seeking remote, housekeeping-style fly-in outpost camps for walleye and northern pike fishing.
Best time: Camps operate during the open-water fishing season; mid-June through late summer is the typical window based on available trip reports, with moose hunting available in the fall season.

The Fishing

Both outpost camps target walleye and northern pike as the primary species, with jumbo perch and whitefish also available. Kayedon Lake sits within the Ogoki River system and is connected to Ogoki Lake, providing anglers access to additional walleye and northern pike water via the river system. Melchett Lake offers roughly 30 km of shoreline including numerous bays, islands, and river systems, with access to adjoining lakes through connected waterways. Lake trout and brook trout are also listed among the available species across the operation's waters.

Fishing is self-guided from 14-foot aluminum boats equipped with 9.9 HP, 15 HP, and 20 HP Mercury outboard motors, with gasoline included and boats allocated on the basis of two persons per boat.

Accommodations

Each outpost camp features a fully equipped housekeeping cabin. The Kayedon Lake cabin accommodates up to 10 persons and the Melchett Lake cabin accommodates up to 8 persons. Cabins are equipped with solar lights, USB charging stations, propane or solar fridges, propane stoves, water pumps, hot showers, wood-burning stoves, sleeping bunks with mattresses, tables, chairs, and a full set of cooking and eating utensils. A full-size BBQ and outdoor fish cooker are provided at each camp. Melchett Lake camp also features a screened porch and screened fish-cleaning station. No meals are provided; guests supply and prepare their own food.

Summarized Review Highlights

Boreal Forest Outfitters, operated by Jason (Jay) and Sue, has built a strong positive reputation among fly-in fishing guests, with reviewers consistently awarding top marks across multiple trips and lakes. The sentiment across available reviews is uniformly enthusiastic, with several groups returning year after year — one group documented at least four consecutive trips to Boreal Forest properties, including Hurst Lake and Whiteclay Lake. Guests describe the operators themselves as fantastic people who run a well-organized operation, and the outfitter appears to attract repeat clientele who are confident enough in the experience to return even under unusual circumstances, such as during a pandemic.

Guests praise the fishing across multiple lakes including Melchett, Hurst, and Whiteclay, targeting walleye and northern pike. Reviewers note that fish can be found close to the cabins but that exploring the full lake is rewarding, with fish caught throughout. Whiteclay Lake in particular has drawn repeat visitors and is noted for its large size — over 12,000 acres and 230 miles of shoreline. One reviewer mentioned that low water levels did not negatively affect the fishing experience. The reviews do not raise any recurring complaints about lodging, food, staff, or the overall operation, and no significant concerns are mentioned across the available feedback.

Based on the reviews, Boreal Forest Outfitters appears best suited for small to mid-sized groups of anglers — particularly those targeting walleye and northern pike — who are comfortable with a self-guided fly-in outpost format. The outfitter seems to appeal especially to returning guests and organized fishing groups who value consistency and a reliable operator relationship. First-time fly-in guests are also represented among reviewers and came away satisfied. There is no indication from the reviews of family-specific amenities or fly-fishing focus, so the destination reads most naturally as a fit for dedicated fishing groups looking for a remote Canadian outpost experience.

Jason and Sue run a great operation
Hey Ryan, a group of six of us went to Melchett in late August 2018. Jason and Sue are fantastic people and run a great operation, you won't be disappointed. Fish can be found close to the cabin but it was fun to explore the entire lake and caught everywhere. Water levels seemed to be low but it didn't seem to matter. As for fish finders, we just used our ice fishing units and clamped the transducer to the transoms. If you want to pm for more information I also live in the Barrie area.
