Summarized Review Highlights
Canada North Lodge sits on the Woman River system north of Ear Falls, Ontario, centered on Little Bear Lake and connected to several other lakes including Snakeweed, Rosen, Loon, and Woman Lake. The lodge has gone through an ownership change — reviews from the previous owners (Doug and Marilyn) are notably negative, citing poor hospitality, subpar food, makeshift accommodations, and a perception that management was focused on adding charges at checkout. Reviews written after Chance Schmidt took over are overwhelmingly positive, with most guests giving five stars and praising the new owner's attentiveness, the quality of food, comfortable (if modest) cabins, knowledgeable long-tenured guides, and consistently strong walleye and northern pike fishing. A few guests under the current ownership have had less positive experiences, citing equipment issues with outboard motors on portage lakes, difficulty catching fish on the main lake system without guided direction, and feeling that guests on lower-tier housekeeping packages received less attention. Overall, the lodge's current reputation trends strongly favorable, particularly among repeat visitors.
Guests consistently highlight the fishing as the standout feature, with walleye counts frequently reported in the dozens to over one hundred fish per day, and northern pike readily available throughout the system. The protected slot limit and conservation practices appear to maintain healthy fish populations. Guides — particularly a long-tenured guide named Pete — receive strong praise for their fish-finding ability and shore lunch cooking. Food prepared by the kitchen staff is frequently described as excellent, with cooked-to-order breakfasts and family-style dinners. Cabins are described as clean and comfortable rather than luxurious, and most rooms have lake views. The portage lakes, especially Snakeweed, are singled out as particularly productive fishing destinations. Wildlife sightings including eagles are noted as a bonus.
There are a few recurring concerns worth noting. One review from the previous ownership period raised serious safety concerns, including inadequate first aid supplies and a dismissive response from the owner regarding medical emergencies — though this predates the current ownership. Under the current owner, at least one guest reported unreliable outboard motors on portage boats and felt nickel-and-dimed for extras when not on the full-service plan. Fishing on the main lake can be inconsistent depending on conditions and season, and guests who do not use guides may find it harder to locate fish. The access road's final 30 miles are reported as rough. This lodge is best suited for walleye and pike anglers — whether experienced Canada veterans or first-timers — who appreciate a remote, drive-in or fly-in setting, don't require upscale amenities, and want high fish-count days over trophy-only pursuits. It also appears well-suited to family groups and multi-generational trips based on several reviews.

Canada North Lodge 2024 Trip Recap
For the first time since 2019, Nick and Curt Harrington headed back north of the border to Canada North Lodge, which sits on the Woman River system north of Ear Falls, Ontario. The lodge sits on Little Bear Lake, one of numerous interconnecting lakes including Snakeweed Lake, Rosen/Hawk Lake, Loon Lake, Bear Lake, Little Woman Lake, Spot Lake, and Woman Lake. The system features an abundance of fish between 12-17 inches, with an 'over' slot limit of 18 inches. Consistent year-classes, the protected slot, and selective harvest means there is a plethora of fish that can be caught between 12-24 inches throughout the entire system. Day One: started Saturday afternoon with mild temperatures; jigging a weed flat they easily put 20-30 fish in the boat. Day Two: after a massive storm, they towed a stranded boat from a neighboring lodge and still managed quality fish. Day Three: flat calm conditions were challenging but the afternoon wind improved the bite. Day Four: headed to Snakeweed Lake (a portage lake from CNL), caught a limit for lunch and seven 'overs' in the evening. Day Five: returned to main body with stable conditions and continued success. Day Six: back on Snakeweed, caught the biggest fish of the trip on the first bite of the day. Day Seven: three more overs to cap the trip. Overall, the fishing was again excellent despite storms, heat advisories, and mid-summer conditions. The Woman River system is an excellent fishery and Canada North Lodge makes the perfect base camp for a trip on it!

FAIR PRICE, FANTASTIC FISHING!!!
My son and I along with a good friend, spent a week at North Canada Lodge in mid June of 2022. We were treated extremely well and we we're very happy with our accomodations. Chance, the owner went out of his way to make sure we had a great time, he even helped us repair a problem we had with our equipment. Cabins are not fancy but very comfortable. Everything you need to cook is furnished, beds were comfortable, bathrooms were large and adequate. Now let's talk about the fishing; I've been going to different resorts in Canada for over 50 years, this was the best Walleye fishing I've had in Canada. We averaged over a 100 Walleyes every day. Northerns were every where, small mouth bass were a pleasant surprise as they ran up to 5 pounds. All these fish were caught on plastic baits, no need for expensive minnows or crawlers, which Chance has available for less than most bait shops. In summary, this is a great place to go if your a serious fisherman and on a budget. You can drive to this camp, last 30 miles are bit rough but manageable.

When we going again grandpa?
Chance Schmidt has done a great job bringing this lodge back to it past greatness. We took our kids and grand kids last July. Fantastic trip, good food, clean comfortable accommodations, and lots of walleye and pike. The teenagers even found some WIFI signal in the evening. All was good. Saw lots of eagles, even saw a couple pickup wounded fish. Did not see any bears or moose on this trip. Saw very few other people, it's like you are alone in Canada. Highly recommended by our family. You can't go wrong. Every room has a great view and is relatively close to the lodge and dining room.

Don't waste your time maybe 1/2 star
Please choose somewhere else to decide to spend your money. I went here a few years back and had the time of my life, but Canada north got a new owner with Chance. He never gave us any tips on the main lake system, which we struggled to catch anything on, and even last time the woman's river was not very good. So we decided to do portages which are and were amazing fishing last time. Unfortunately every single portage we went to had one or both motors unable to start. My dad and I have been starting smaller motors for over 30 years on various Canada lakes. These were brutal. We even debated going home a couple days early. Chance treated us terrible in our stay, constantly trying to charge us for every little tick tacky thing that he could find. We felt like overall he didn't care about anything we wanted or needed because we choose the housekeeping plan instead of the most expensive plan. Please save your money and go somewhere else.

The new owner is great and location fantastic
I stayed in June when Chance took over the lodge. The lake is wonderful, and he was very accomodating as a host. He is taking pride in the lodge and working to build the business up there in God's country. You cannot go wrong.

FANTASTIC TRIP TO CANADA NORTH LODGE, July 2018!!
From the moment we arrived at the lodge, the new owner Chance, his wife and his staff made us feel welcome and part of the family. The cabins are very clean and comfortable, the scenery is simply fantastic! Best fishing of my life, our guide, Pete has been at Canada North for almost 45 years. He is a great guy who really knows his fish and how to take care of his guests – He cooked us great shore lunches and took great care of us every step of the way – couldn't have asked for a better fishing guide! When the day of fishing was over we returned to the lodge for fantastic, home cooked meals. From the cooked to order breakfast in the morning to the family style dinners in the evening, the ladies at Canada North Lodge know how to cook – FANTASTIC FOOD! This trip is the only time I can say I was actually sore from catching so many fish! CAN'T WAIT TO GO BACK AGAIN!!!

I cannot say enough GOOD about CNL.
Monday Andy was my guide caught over 60 walleye that day. Had a great shore lunch at the outpost. The next day did not catch as many. Still caught several walleye and northern pike. Had an even better shore lunch because it was cooked outside. Third day we took a portage to a catch & release lake. Where I caught 75 fish mostly walleye and a few pike. Last day my wife was able to go out with me. She caught some walleye and about 20 pike. All in all the trip was VERY good. Food and service was OUTSTANDING. Chance is very interested in his customers and very helpful.

Horrible.
Stayed at this lodge in July. Fishing is very average along with the food and make shift cabins. The owners Doug and Marilyn are very unsocial and have no clue how to make guests feel comfortable. Doug told us upon arrival that his supplier's float plan crashed and he had no live minnows only frozen ones. Lol. Funniest thing is he doesn't even have live minnow holding tubs anywhere on his property. You are lucky if they help you with anything throughout the whole week. Just interested in how they can add more $$$$ to your bill when you check out.

Fishing trip to Canada North Lodge
Traveled to CNL in August. Fishing was not great. First day one of the couples in our group caught only 2 or 3 fish. On the last day we went to Snake Weed Lake and the fishing was much better there. Largest Northern caught was 28-1/2". Not much bigger than central MN lakes. Food was really good. Kitchen staff was terrific. Accommodations are nice. Biggest complaint is the lack of communication between boats. This is a very large river/lake system. We were travelling with my sister, her husband and my elderly parents. Since my father had suffered a heart attack earlier this year I was concerned on how the fishing guide in his boat would contact someone if there were to be a medical emergency. I learned one of the boats has a satellite phone but the other 2 boats don't. When I questioned the owner about it he said if someone suffers a medical emergency you better hope they are young and live long enough for medical help to arrive. What a jerk! Later in the trip one of us cut our arm and it was bleeding quite a lot. They gave us paper towels to hold on the wound. When inquiring about a first aid kit or gauze pads or bandages, the proprietor gave us 2 maxi pads! You've got to be kidding?!? These people need to realize they are responsible for your safety while you stay at their resort. Needless to say, we will not return. There are many MANY other fishing lodges much closer to home for us to spend our money at.

A Wonderful Time
As usual our group had a wonderful time. I have been coming up to fish with you for fifteen years! What else can I say. Looking forward to this year. I might add that I have seen great fishing getting better every year. I really commend you for your conservation efforts. Thanks for all of the years.
