Red Lake, Ontario
Self-guided fly-in outpost operator running seven remote lakes out of Red Lake, northwestern Ontario.
Canadian Fly-In Fishing is an outpost-style operation based in Red Lake, Ontario, that has been providing fly-in fishing trips for approximately three decades. The outfitter operates remote outpost camps on seven fly-in-only lakes: Peisk, Mimi, Knox, Robert, Job, Thicketwood, and Murdock. It runs its own float-equipped air service out of its Red Lake air base, flying guests directly to whichever outpost they have booked.
The operation is run by Jordan, a commercial pilot and avid angler who has been flying and working in the Red Lake area since 2015. Canadian Fly-In Fishing is the only outfitter on each of its lakes, meaning guest groups have exclusive access to their water for the duration of the trip. The outfitter enforces a conservation program across all lakes, including size restrictions and, on certain lakes such as Mimi and Peisk, a catch-and-consume-only policy.
All seven lakes hold walleye, northern pike, and perch, with smallmouth bass also present on Thicketwood Lake. The fishing is self-guided from the outpost cabin, with anglers exploring their primary lake as well as portage lakes accessible from several camps. Peisk Lake is noted for trophy walleye exceeding 30 inches, Knox Lake produces consistent walleye in the 22-to-24-inch range along with pike exceeding 40 inches, and Mimi Lake is described as a high-action fishery capable of producing large numbers of fish in short sessions. Job Lake has produced some of the largest walleye reported in recent seasons.
Size restrictions apply on all lakes — walleye over 18 inches and northern pike over 27 inches are to be released. The number of anglers on each lake is controlled to support healthy fish populations. Trip packages run four, five, and seven days.
Each outpost cabin accommodates up to eight guests and is equipped with on-demand hot water units including showers, a solar electric system, fridges, freezers, BBQs (gas and charcoal), fish fryers, fish-cleaning tables, and kitchens stocked with cookware and utensils. Each camp also has four 14-foot aluminum fishing boats powered by 9.9 horsepower four-stroke outboard motors, with a spare motor kept at each camp. Unlimited outboard fuel is included. A satellite phone is provided at each outpost for contacting the air base in case of emergency. Meals are self-catered; guests bring their own groceries, though the outfitter can arrange grocery, bait, and beverage delivery to the air base.
