Vermilion Bay, Ontario
Family-run outfitter operating five fly-in outpost camps and two drive-in cabins in northwestern Ontario near Vermilion Bay.
Fly North Outfitters is owned and operated by Chris and Nicole Rob, a husband-and-wife team based in Vermilion Bay, Ontario. The operation was established in 2019 with the purchase of their first outpost, Birmingham Lake, and has since grown to include five remote fly-in outpost locations and two private drive-in cabin rentals. Chris serves as a bush pilot and handles outpost maintenance, while Nicole brings a background in tourism and works as a registered nurse in Vermilion Bay.
The fly-in outposts are situated on Aerial Lake, Birmingham Lake, Maskara Lake, and Vaughan Bay off Lac Seul, with an additional yurt-style accommodation on Lynx Lake. The two drive-in cabins sit on the Indian Chain of Lakes, a connected system of ten lakes stretching over 20 miles, located on Boulder Point Road outside Vermilion Bay. Each outpost is the only cabin on its lake, providing exclusive access to the fishery for the booking group.
Established: 2019
The fly-in outpost lakes offer walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, and perch. Aerial Lake is noted for trophy northern pike, with fish reported over 40 inches, as the outpost lakes serve as natural spawning areas. Smallmouth bass fishing is available at Lynx, Vaughan, and Maskara Lakes. The drive-in cabins on the Indian Chain of Lakes add walleye, musky, lake trout, and northern pike to the species mix, with the chain's varied structure of weed beds, reefs, rock cliffs, and drop-offs providing diverse angling conditions.
The operation enforces a conservation fishing limit at all fly-in locations, and guests are not permitted to take fish home; fish may be eaten at the lake during the stay. Fly-in packages include live minnows, fuel for outboards, landing nets, minnow buckets, and mid-week camp checks. Boats at the fly-in outposts are 14-foot or 16-foot aluminum craft powered by 8 hp, 9.9 hp, or 15 hp motors.
Fly-in outpost cabins are self-catering (housekeeping) style and are powered by Honda generators. Each cabin includes hot and cold running water, indoor showers, electric refrigerators, microwaves, toasters, coffee makers, propane stoves, BBQs, fish cookers, TVs with DVD players, and all cooking utensils. Bedding is supplied. Cabins accommodate between 2 and 12 guests depending on the location. Lynx Lake features a yurt rather than a traditional cabin. The two drive-in cabins on the Indian Chain of Lakes differ in size: Cabin 1 on Indian Lake is a log cabin sleeping up to 10 with multiple bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a rock fireplace, and a private dock; Cabin 2 on Edward Lake sleeps up to 6 and has 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, and a private dock. Live minnows, ice, and linens are included at the drive-in cabins.
