Kenora, Ontario
Family-run outfitter operating two all-inclusive lodges, a drive-in housekeeping camp, and multiple fly-in outpost cabins on the English River in northwestern Ontario.
Halley's Camps is a family-owned and operated fishing outfitter based out of Kenora, Ontario, with properties on the English River north of Minaki. The operation was founded by Louis and Yvonne Halley in 1946, starting with two guest cabins on Black Sturgeon Lake just outside Kenora. Over eight decades, it has grown into a collection of two all-inclusive lodges (Kettle Falls Lodge and One Man Lake Lodge), a drive-in housekeeping camp (Caribou Falls Landing), a boat-in outpost (Dufault's Island), and three fly-in outpost cabins on Trapline, Moosehorn, and Rex Lakes. Current owners Chris and Amber Halley carry on the operation.
Halley's Camps is the only outfitter along a thirty-five mile stretch of the English River. Guests can choose from fully staffed all-inclusive lodge packages, self-guided housekeeping cabin rentals, or remote self-guided fly-in and boat-in outpost experiences. Float plane service for the lodges and outposts departs from the River Air dock in Kenora.
Established: 1946
The primary fishery at Halley's Camps targets walleye, northern pike, and smallmouth bass on the English River system and connected lakes. Lake trout and musky are also available at select locations. The English River offers current, sheltered bays, rock points, and shoals that hold walleye typically in 8 to 15 feet of water. Northern pike over 40 inches are caught and released regularly. Rex Lake, an 11-mile-long outpost lake, is noted for trophy smallmouth bass, while Trapline Lake is known for large walleye. At the all-inclusive lodges, float planes docked on site can transport guests to remote day-trip lakes for additional fishing options. Boats at all properties are 14- to 18-foot Lund models with 25 to 50 horsepower motors, with all gas included.
Accommodation options range from the two all-inclusive lodges to housekeeping cabins and remote outpost cabins. Kettle Falls Lodge features nine private guest cabins with individual decks. One Man Lake Lodge offers eight guest rooms inside the main lodge, each with an ensuite bathroom and patio door access to a wraparound deck, plus one separate private guest cabin. All-inclusive packages at the lodges cover meals, daily maid service, boats, gas, ice, minnows, and optional guiding. At Caribou Falls Landing, fully equipped housekeeping cabins include two to four bedrooms, a complete kitchen, and a furnished private deck with barbecue; guests do their own cooking. The fly-in and boat-in outpost cabins are solar-powered with generator backup and include full kitchens, propane barbecues and fish cookers, indoor showers, flushing toilets, hot and cold running water, and satellite phones for emergencies.
