Overview

Halley's Camps is a family-owned and operated fishing outfitter based out of Kenora, Ontario, with properties on the English River north of Minaki. The operation was founded by Louis and Yvonne Halley in 1946, starting with two guest cabins on Black Sturgeon Lake just outside Kenora. Over eight decades, it has grown into a collection of two all-inclusive lodges (Kettle Falls Lodge and One Man Lake Lodge), a drive-in housekeeping camp (Caribou Falls Landing), a boat-in outpost (Dufault's Island), and three fly-in outpost cabins on Trapline, Moosehorn, and Rex Lakes. Current owners Chris and Amber Halley carry on the operation.

Halley's Camps is the only outfitter along a thirty-five mile stretch of the English River. Guests can choose from fully staffed all-inclusive lodge packages, self-guided housekeeping cabin rentals, or remote self-guided fly-in and boat-in outpost experiences. Float plane service for the lodges and outposts departs from the River Air dock in Kenora.

Established: 1946

Best for: Suitable for a wide range of anglers and groups, from families and first-time fly-in visitors seeking all-inclusive lodge comfort to self-guided groups wanting a fully remote outpost experience on a private lake.
Best time: The camps operate from May through September, with walleye, northern pike, and smallmouth bass fishing available throughout the season and a five percent rate discount offered for September trips.

The Fishing

The primary fishery at Halley's Camps targets walleye, northern pike, and smallmouth bass on the English River system and connected lakes. Lake trout and musky are also available at select locations. The English River offers current, sheltered bays, rock points, and shoals that hold walleye typically in 8 to 15 feet of water. Northern pike over 40 inches are caught and released regularly. Rex Lake, an 11-mile-long outpost lake, is noted for trophy smallmouth bass, while Trapline Lake is known for large walleye. At the all-inclusive lodges, float planes docked on site can transport guests to remote day-trip lakes for additional fishing options. Boats at all properties are 14- to 18-foot Lund models with 25 to 50 horsepower motors, with all gas included.

Accommodations

Accommodation options range from the two all-inclusive lodges to housekeeping cabins and remote outpost cabins. Kettle Falls Lodge features nine private guest cabins with individual decks. One Man Lake Lodge offers eight guest rooms inside the main lodge, each with an ensuite bathroom and patio door access to a wraparound deck, plus one separate private guest cabin. All-inclusive packages at the lodges cover meals, daily maid service, boats, gas, ice, minnows, and optional guiding. At Caribou Falls Landing, fully equipped housekeeping cabins include two to four bedrooms, a complete kitchen, and a furnished private deck with barbecue; guests do their own cooking. The fly-in and boat-in outpost cabins are solar-powered with generator backup and include full kitchens, propane barbecues and fish cookers, indoor showers, flushing toilets, hot and cold running water, and satellite phones for emergencies.

Summarized Review Highlights

Halley's Camps draws overwhelmingly positive reviews across multiple platforms, with the vast majority of guests describing their stays as exceptional or among the best fishing trips of their lives. The reputation that emerges from most reviews is one of a well-run, professional fly-in operation with a loyal repeat clientele, including guests who bring multiple generations of family members back year after year. One negative account does stand out, however, in which a reviewer describes a hostile confrontation on the ice with an individual they identified as the owner, including a physical threat. This incident is worth noting for prospective guests, though it stands in stark contrast to the experience described in every other review.

Guests consistently praise the quality of the fishing, which appears to be the central draw. Species mentioned include Northern Pike — with at least one catch reported at 45.5 inches — smallmouth bass, walleye, and pike on the English River. The float plane access to remote lakes is frequently highlighted as a major part of the appeal. Beyond the fishing itself, reviewers speak highly of the lodging, describing cabins as modern, well-maintained, and comfortable. Staff and guides receive repeated compliments for being friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely enthusiastic. Shoreline shore lunches with freshly caught fish are specifically called out as a memorable part of the experience. Boats and equipment are also mentioned positively.

Based on the reviews, Halley's Camps appears best suited for groups of friends or family looking for a guided fly-in fishing adventure in Ontario's backcountry, particularly those targeting Northern Pike and smallmouth bass. It also appeals to multigenerational groups, as several reviewers mention bringing children, grandchildren, and adult family members. First-time fly-in anglers may find it approachable given the guided format and well-appointed accommodations, while experienced anglers will likely appreciate the access to remote, productive waters. Anyone sensitive to the one reported conduct concern may want to look into it further before booking.

Father's Day Gift - Epic Fly-In Fishing Trip
Fathers day 2025 I gifted my son in-law Colton a fishing adventure at Halley's Camp. I waited a long time to have an epic fly-in fishing trip. From the moment we arrived at the dock the staff was amazing, really friendly and accommodating. At 2:30pm the adventure started we jumped on the float plane and we were on our way to Kettle Falls Lodge. As soon as we arrived the staff was ready and everything was taken care of with smiles as they showed us around. Our cabin was really nice with all the amenities you would want. We walked down to the dock and I tossed a line in and immediately hooked a 20" pike. I knew right then we were in for a great trip. The fishing was the best fresh water fishing I have ever had in my life. One monster fish after another as the days went on. Our guide Joe was always putting us on the fish and he truly loved what he was doing. Shoreline lunches with fresh caught fish and all the sides you could eat. My son Colton caught the biggest fish of the trip 45.5" Northern Pike, amazing effort on a 5' Ugly Stick rod. We loved every minute of this trip from the staff, food, equipment, lodgings and the fishing it was all amazing!! We had Northern Lights on our last night just to make it all complete, many thanks to the staff of Halley's you were fantastic, we are already planning our next trip! Cheers, Michael & Colton

Canada Fly-In Fishing Trip Recommendations
I did 3 trips to Halley's Camp. Fly out on float plane from Minaki Ontario to Halley's Camp. Float plane out of Halley's to remote lakes everyday for 90% smallies and 10% Pike. Fished a few days on the English river that the lodge sits on for Walleye and Pike. An incredible experience.

While out enjoying a beautiful day of fishing in the back country we were approached on snow mobile by this ignorant entitled person claiming he was Halley. He asked why are we fishing where we were because we have lots of lakes over in Manitoba. He grilled us asking about live minnows. Smuggly replying to the folks he was with 'they won't be catching as they don't have live minnows.' He also stated he hated people going out and finding old holes to fish in. We have been going there for years so he was making assumptions. He then told us he was going to his next spot and if he sees us in that spot at a later time he would 'run us down' 'make no mistake I will run you over.' If this is how a camp operates folks should know who you are giving your money too. He also had children on the back of his snowmobile while he tried to escalate the situation. I have posted a photo of this person. This type of conduct isn't what you would expect from a so called professional outfitter or outdoorsman. You should be ashamed of yourself.
