Overview

Hidden Bay Lodge and Camps is a 100% family-owned and operated outfitter based near Sioux Lookout, Ontario. The Reinke Family has run the operation for over 50 years, offering self-guided fly-in fishing trips across six remote destination lakes in the wilderness of northwestern Ontario. The main lodge and seaplane base are situated on Abram Lake, approximately eight miles south of Sioux Lookout.

Guests typically spend their first night at the main lodge before being flown by floatplane to one of the six outpost lake cabins, where they fish independently for the duration of their stay. The six named outpost lakes are Armit, Gage, Blackstone, Highstone, Miniss, and Raggedwood, each offering a separate cabin and its own lake to fish. Many of these lakes are also connected to additional nearby lakes accessible without portaging.

Established: 1970

Best for: Self-guided groups of four to ten anglers seeking remote fly-in walleye and northern pike fishing in northwestern Ontario.

The Fishing

The primary target species across all six outpost lakes are walleye and northern pike. Walleye are present in numbers across the lake systems, which are part of the Vermilion River drainage flowing into Lac Seul. Northern pike are found throughout the warmer, shallower water and weed beds. Some lakes on the system also hold lake trout. Guests fish self-guided from rental boats, and the operation caters to both those seeking quantity and those targeting trophy-sized fish. Catch-and-release practices apply to certain size ranges of walleye, with slot limits in effect.

Accommodations

Each of the six outpost cabins is situated directly on the shore of its respective lake. Cabins range in capacity from 4 to 10 guests and vary from two to three bedrooms. All outpost cabins include hot and cold running water, an indoor flush toilet, a shower, a modern kitchen with a propane stove, solar-powered lights, and satellite internet and phone service. Some cabins feature wood stoves and open-air or screened decks. The all-inclusive package covers groceries, and guests work with lodge staff ahead of travel to finalize their food order.

Summarized Review Highlights

Hidden Bay Lodge earns overwhelmingly positive reviews across multiple sources, with guests consistently awarding it top marks. The lodge has cultivated a strong base of repeat visitors who return year after year, and the tone across reviews is genuinely enthusiastic rather than politely positive. The staff — mentioned by name in several reviews — appear to be a central reason guests keep coming back, with words like "amazing" and "the greatest people" used repeatedly. Long-term loyalty is a recurring theme, with multiple reviewers referencing many trips over many years.

Guests consistently highlight three things: the quality of the staff and their helpfulness, the comfort of the accommodations and outpost camps, and the fishing. The walleye fishing in particular receives exceptional praise, with one detailed account from Armit Lake describing non-stop action across four days and hundreds of fish caught using a wide variety of lures. Boats and motors are described as comfortable and reliable, and the outpost camps are said to offer solid creature comforts. Value for money is also mentioned positively.

Based on the available reviews, there are no recurring complaints or concerns to flag. Every reviewer expresses a clear intention to return, and none raise issues with service, facilities, food, or fishing quality. This destination appears best suited for groups of friends looking to establish or continue a fishing tradition, dedicated walleye anglers seeking high-volume action in a remote northern Ontario setting, and repeat fly-in guests who value a lodge where staff relationships and consistency matter as much as the fishing itself.

Hidden Bay Lodge: Outpost Walleye Fishing on Armit Lake
A walleye factory with all the peaceful and northern scenery one could hope for on a fly-in destination is what you can expect at Hidden Bay Lodge's Armit Lake. Without a doubt, Hidden Bay Lodge was a perfect place to start that friend tradition. The outpost on Armit Lake had all you could ask for, plus lights-out fishing. Along with very comfortable and reliable boats and motors, the camp had all the creature comforts of home. Honestly, from the first lure drop until we went in for lunch or dinner each day, the walleye fishing was non-stop action. I would go so far as to say it was epic walleye fishing. I truly used every different kind of lure I had in my tackle box, and I caught not just one but dozens of walleye on everything I put in front of them. After four days of walleye fishing awesomeness, the number of walleye caught totalled in the hundreds. The whole trip, between the hook sets, fish catching, laughs, and telling old stories, we were already planning our next trip back, but this time with more buddies. This was the first year of this Ontario friend tradition and one I won't soon forget. If you're looking for a place that will make you feel like not a good fisherman, but a great fisherman, then Hidden Bay Lodge's Armit Lake definitely needs to be a top priority on your next Ontario Experience.

I can't image a better place to go for a fly-in. These people are amazing and the outposts and fishing top notch. Been with them for many many trips —and just the BEST. Not being able to visit in 2020 is just unbearable. But will definitely see them all next year—-God willing!! Peace and good health to all my friends at HBL!!!
