Overview

Ignace Outposts is an owner-operated fly-in fishing outfitter based in Ignace, Ontario, on the Canadian Shield. The company runs twelve cabins spread across seven lakes, with camps carefully selected for fishing opportunity, remoteness, and varied character. Lakes range in size from the large Seseganaga Lake — a 30,000-acre body of water running more than 25 miles — down to smaller, more intimate waters such as Tri Lake. The operation is run by Evan and Thia Stewart out of 166 Lakeshore Drive, Ignace, Ontario.

Integral to the outfitter is Ignace Airways, the company's own seaplane operation that has been flying guests in and out of northwestern Ontario for over 50 years. The fleet includes a de Havilland Beaver and a de Havilland Otter, and all flights depart from the seaplane base on Agimak Lake in Ignace. The company has a long-standing conservation policy, requiring guests to practise catch-and-release on trophy fish and to keep only what they intend to eat.

Best for: Self-guided anglers, families, and small groups seeking fly-in outpost camps on remote lakes with no road access.
Best time: Camps operate through the open-water season; spring through early fall is the primary fishing period, with spring and early summer typically producing the best walleye and northern pike activity.

The Fishing

The primary target species across the seven lakes are walleye, northern pike, and lake trout. Some lakes hold all three species, and Irene Lake also offers smallmouth bass as well as whitefish. Metionga Lake is noted for walleye in moving water at multiple locations on the lake, while Seseganaga Lake is recognized as one of the few lakes in Canada where northern pike exceeding 50 inches can still be found; lake trout and walleye on that lake are also reported to be above average in size. Irene Lake is clear, cold, and deep, producing walleye, smallmouth bass, lake trout, northern pike, and whitefish.

Anglers operate on a self-guided, housekeeping basis. Ignace Outposts has won the Ontario Anglers and Hunters Angler Award for Largest Northern Pike Caught and Released twice — in 2004 for a 52-inch fish at Seseganaga Lake and in 2011 for a 50-inch fish at Metionga Lake. The company's conservation approach asks guests to keep smaller fish for consumption and return larger trophy fish to the water.

Accommodations

Cabins across the seven lakes vary in size and configuration, ranging from two-bedroom units sleeping up to eight, to larger three-bedroom cabins sleeping ten to twelve guests. Several cabins feature saunas, screened-in fish cleaning huts, and decks. Facilities are described as fully modern, with running hot and cold water, showers, and solar lighting. Cabins are self-catering; guests bring and prepare their own food, though the outfitter can supply food and beverages on request. Some locations, such as Hilltop Lake and Irene Lake, are situated on sand beaches and are noted as suitable for families. Larger groups can be accommodated across multiple cabins on the same lake.

Summarized Review Highlights

Ignace Outposts, operated by Brad and Karen Greaves out of Ignace, Ontario, carries a strong and consistent reputation built over many years of repeat customers. Every review collected is five stars, and several guests are on their fifth, sixth, or more visit with the outfitter. The tone across reviews is one of genuine loyalty rather than first-impression enthusiasm, with multiple guests describing the owners and staff as professional, accommodating, and welcoming enough that visitors feel like family rather than customers. The outfitter runs fly-in outpost cabins on several remote lakes — including Seseganaga, Metionga, Tri Lake, Irene, Flindt, and others — all accessible by floatplane roughly 60 miles from the Ignace base, which itself is about 150 miles northwest of Thunder Bay.

Guests consistently praise the fishing, particularly for walleye, northern pike, and lake trout, with multiple reviewers reporting catches of trophy-sized fish in the 25–35 inch range. The remote nature of the lakes — fly-in access only — means low angling pressure and larger fish. Beyond fishing, reviewers highlight the quality and reliability of the equipment (boats, motors, canoes), the helpfulness of Brad and Karen in matching groups to the right lake, and the overall wilderness experience including wildlife sightings such as wolves, moose, bears, and diverse birdlife. One reviewer specifically mentioned that late September offers nearly bug-free conditions and very few other visitors. The cabin guest journals, which contain stories and notes left by previous visitors over the years, were called out as an unexpected and memorable touch. One reviewer noted that bait can be a practical limitation at fly-in outposts in general, and recommended coming prepared with artificial lures — tube jigs in particular were singled out as highly effective — though live crawlers are kept on-site in ice houses when available.

There are no recurring complaints in this set of reviews. The only practical considerations mentioned are logistical rather than critical: guests need to drive to Ignace, Ontario before taking a floatplane to camp, and bait options may be limited compared to a drive-in destination. Ignace Outposts appears best suited for groups of fishing-focused anglers — particularly those chasing trophy walleye, northern pike, or lake trout — as well as father-son trips, couples where one partner is more interested in nature activities like canoeing or photography, and anyone specifically seeking a true fly-in wilderness experience with minimal boat traffic and low fishing pressure. First-time fly-in guests are well supported given the outfitter's reputation for thorough pre-trip communication and guidance.

Another wonderful week at Ignace Outposts
This month I took my 6th fly-in trip with Ignace Outposts during the last 15 years. I've never been disappointed. Every trip has been a unique experience. They operate cabins on a number of remote lakes in the Canadian wilderness. I've stayed at Tri Lake 3 times, Irene twice and now Metionga. If you plan to go, I recommend reviewing the unique features of each lake on their website and consulting with owners Brad and Karen Greaves to determine the best fit for your group. This trip included myself and my wife in one cabin, and my brother and his son in an adjoining cabin. My wife and I were mostly interested in canoeing, birdwatching and nature photography, while my brother and his son were more interested in fishing and boating. Brad made sure that my wife and I had a good canoe on a quiet neighboring lake (it's called Little Metionga but actually about 3 miles long), while my brother and his son used a fishing boat with a new 15 horse motor on Metionga and two adjoining lakes. It was a perfect arrangement that allowed everyone to satisfy their interests. We stayed for 6 days, thoroughly enjoyed every day and found plenty to satisfy our diverse interests. I got some great nature photos including wolves and spruce grouse. My brother and his son caught good-size walleyes for our dinners and a few very nice northern pike. Early September is a great time to go – almost no bugs and very few people. This trip requires a drive to Ignace, Ontario, about 150 miles northwest of Thunder Bay. From there the floatplane took us about 60 miles to Lake Metionga.

You guys are very accommodating in all aspects of making sure we had a great fishing experience. Randy was a great guide on the trip to Metionga. First time we have seen a bear and a moose on the same flight. Thanks much, MS

Father and Son on Flindt Lake
Once again I can not express in words what a great time we had and how great of an operation you run. Makes one feel like we are part of the family when we come up for a visit!! Fishing being as great as it is does not hurt either. Just wanted to share some of the pictures. The Walleye (23") was caught not 50 yds from the cabin and released. Thanks again for the wonderful "Father and Son Vacation." — Eric R. Meek (Eric and his son Connor spent a week on Flindt Lake in early August.)

Seseganaga Slam
Brad, Karen, & Crew, Thanks for another great trip. Here are some pictures of my Seseganaga Slam last Tuesday. We rolled up on a spot and I got the 25" Walleye on the first cast. Caught the 27" Northern about an hour later, then followed up with the 26" Walleye right before lunch. Decided to try for the laker later in the day, but forgot my laker rod, so with the combination of the wind and bumping the motor, I got a little walleye spinner down to 35' and up comes the 28" laker. What a day! At least it wasn't a hammer handle Northern to complete the slam. I threw in the 35" Northern, caught in a torrential downpour on Thursday, for effect. Even though it was windy, rainy and cold we were all still able to catch several good sized fish. I caught at least 10 20"+ walleye. It may take me until Monday at work to thaw out. Regards, Bill Heston

Lake Seseganaga Ontario — Ignace Outposts experience
Went to Seseganaga for a couple years when we were into the fly-in type of fishing adventure and must say that fishing was always fantastic and the outpost cabins were very satisfactory. We went through Ignace Outposts and fly-in service and they were great. As in all fly-ins, bait can always be an issue so be prepared to use artificial but because of the ice houses on site at the cabins crawlers tend to be the best bet. But artificial is usually always all that's needed. One bait that I would never go there again without is tubes. Obviously something they don't see that often but they were all over a cast or vertical jigged tube. Never had heard a bad report out of Seseganaga so enjoy, eat plenty of fish, don't be afraid to venture away from the cabin.

Tales from Ses
Ginny and I decided to take a summer vacation to a pristine wilderness lake in Ontario. I had always had a desire to fish one of the best walleye lakes that this region had to offer. We both had done some research into which lakes provided trophy walleyes, northern pike and lake trout. The one that we agreed upon was Seseganaga. Seseganaga is only accessible by air, a real plus for us, because it receives limited angling pressure and it has large fish. Therefore, we contacted Brad and Karen Greaves from Ignace Outposts, Ltd. Their reputation for running a first class fly-in and for having the best outpost on Seseganaga is the reason we decided to select them for our vacation. From the time that we met them at an All Canada show until the time we arrived back at the float plane base, they took care of us. Prior to the trip they give all of their clients a booklet that allows them a checklist of things to bring and items to remember. Ignace Outposts, Ltd. became our host for a week, but the things that we learned while at camp go far beyond the experience of flight or catching of fish. The experience of living vicariously through the journal that resides at the cabin in Seseganaga is priceless and creates a lasting memory for this journalist. Each night after battling fish all day long and doing the nightly chores of dishes my wife and I would read a few stories or tales from Ses. The tales from Ses are the bonus because fishing is great, the weather is super, and the wildlife is spectacular.

Yelp
After 40 years of trips to fish in Canada, I'd rate this company as one of the best. This is the first I felt compelled to write a good review. We had reliable equipment, great fishing and excellent service at Ignace Outposts. Although this was our first trip to Ignace I felt like we were treated like friends. If you are looking for an adventure and enjoy fishing excellent service is provided by a caring professional team at Ignace Outposts.
