Overview

Kashabowie Outposts is a fly-in fishing outpost operator based in Atikokan, Ontario, in the Sunset Country region of northwestern Ontario. Founded in 1958 with one aircraft and two outpost camps, the operation has grown to include a fleet of three de Havilland Beaver floatplanes and one Cessna 180, serving outpost camps on 10 separate lakes across the Canadian Shield.

The air base is located on Eva Lake, just east of Atikokan. All camps are self-guided, housekeeping-style outposts. The company also operates under the name Sapawe Air for its float plane air service. Ontario fishing licences, live bait, and basic supplies are available for purchase at the air base before guests depart for their lake.

Established: 1958

Best for: Anglers seeking self-guided, fly-in only access to private lakes, including small groups, families, and those targeting walleye and northern pike in northwestern Ontario.
Best time: The operation is open May through October, with the full season available for walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, and lake trout.

The Fishing

Kashabowie Outposts' 10 lakes target walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, and lake trout. Walleye are available across all lakes, with fish reported up to and exceeding 32 inches. Northern pike and smallmouth bass are also present across multiple lakes, while select lakes offer lake trout. The outpost operates a self-guided catch-and-release ethic, encouraging guests to photograph and release trophy fish. The operation manages its fisheries over the long term, and repeat guests have reported high catch rates. Anglers fish from 14-foot Lund boats with swivel seats, powered by 9.9 HP Yamaha four-stroke outboard motors, with all fuel included.

Each lake is private — all but one cabin is the only camp on its lake — meaning guests typically have exclusive access to the water for the duration of their stay.

Accommodations

Cabins range from smaller outpost-style units for couples or small groups up to three- and four-bedroom cabins that can accommodate parties of 10 or more guests. Each cabin is equipped with a propane refrigerator, propane cook stove, propane barbecue grill, and propane fish cooker. Heat is provided by a wood stove with firewood cut and stacked on arrival. Cabins have solar electric lighting, indoor hot-water showers, an outdoor deck, and a screened-in gazebo at many locations. All cookware, dishes, and utensils are supplied. Boats and motors are included, with one boat provided per every two guests. A two-way radio phone is in each cabin for check-ins and emergencies. Generators are available where needed. Meals are self-catered — guests bring and prepare their own food.

Summarized Review Highlights

Kashabowie Outposts draws consistently positive feedback across fishing and hunting trips, with reviewers frequently rating their experiences at the highest level. Guests who have used other Canadian outfitters specifically note that Kashabowie stands out from the competition, with one angler who had visited roughly five other outfitters calling it the best of the bunch. The operation is described as well-organized, and staff members — including individuals named Fern and Brooke — are called out by name for their helpfulness and the quality of experience they deliver. Both fishing and hunting guests come away satisfied.

On the hunting side, guests report successful archery hunts and appreciate the logistical organization of the trips, though at least one reviewer noted uncertainty around the tag situation, suggesting that license or tag availability may be a variable outside the outfitter's control that prospective hunters should look into ahead of time. No recurring complaints about lodging, food, or customer service appear in the available reviews.

Based on the reviews available, Kashabowie Outposts appears well suited for anglers looking for a fly-in lake experience — including family trips, as one father-daughter outing was highlighted — as well as hunters pursuing archery seasons in the Atikokan area. Those who have been to other Canadian outfitters and felt underwhelmed may find this operation a step above what they have tried before. The sample of reviews here is small, so prospective guests are encouraged to seek out additional sources before making a decision.

4 days on Grew Lake with my daughter
Just got back from spending 4 days on Grew lake with my daughter. What an experience! Fern, Brooke, and the entire crew were simply great and the experience they created for us exceeded our expectations. I've been to Canada fishing about 5 other times with other outfitters and none compared to Kashabowie.

Getting There

Guests fly in by floatplane from the Kashabowie Outposts air base on Eva Lake, located just east of Atikokan, Ontario. The air base is approximately two hours east of International Falls, Minnesota, and two hours west of Thunder Bay, Ontario. Transport to the outpost cabins is by de Havilland Beaver floatplane or Cessna 180, operated by the company's own licensed pilots. Many of the outpost lakes are accessible only by floatplane due to their remote location in the northern Ontario wilderness.
