Overview

KayAir Service and Outposts is operated by Peter and Karen Kay and is based on Lac Seul, approximately three miles south of Ear Falls, Ontario on Highway 105. The operation offers guests a choice between a drive-in cabin on Lac Seul and float-plane service to three remote outpost camps — Birch Lake, Casummit Lake, and Saddle Lake — all located in the Patricia tourist area of Northwestern Ontario and accessible only by air.

KayAir owns and operates two aircraft, a Beech 18 and a Cessna 185, for transporting guests and supplies. Approximately every three days during a stay, KayAir staff fly in to remote outposts to conduct a camp check, restocking fresh ice and bait as needed. The company also offers guided and unguided fall moose hunting packages.

Best for: Self-guided groups of anglers seeking exclusive access to remote northwestern Ontario lakes for walleye, northern pike, and lake trout.
Best time: Trips run Saturday to Saturday during the open water season; specific season dates are not confirmed in available sources.

The Fishing

The fly-in outpost lakes target walleye, northern pike, and lake trout. Birch Lake, located 70 air miles northeast of the base, covers approximately 30,000 acres and features weed bays, reefs, and rivers that hold walleye, northern pike, and lake trout throughout the season. Casummit Lake and Saddle Lake each have a single cabin on the lake, providing exclusive access. Saddle Lake is designated a conservation lake, and guests are asked not to remove trophy fish. The drive-in Lac Seul base camp offers fishing for walleye, northern pike, perch, whitefish, and musky on a lake covering over 322,000 acres. Trips run from three to seven days, and fresh bait including minnows and nightcrawlers is available for purchase directly from KayAir.

Accommodations

Fly-in outpost cabins are fully equipped with hot and cold running water, indoor hot showers, solar lighting, wood stoves for heating, propane gas BBQ grills, propane fish cookers, gas refrigerators with freezers, a full-size cook stove and oven, cooking utensils, and comfortable mattresses on bunk beds. Each outpost also includes a screened-in fish cleaning house with running water, a covered deck, and a storage shed at the dock. Birch Lake has two separate cabins, each accommodating up to eight people with four boats and motors. The drive-in Lac Seul cabin is a light housekeeping cottage with electric heat, flush toilets, microwave, toaster, bed linens, pillows, and kitchen linens; guests bring their own bath towels, washcloths, and toilet paper. Boats and motors are included at the fly-in outposts, and ice is supplied at no additional charge.

Summarized Review Highlights

Kayair Service and Outposts, based at Lake Lac Seul in Ontario, has built a strong loyal following among repeat customers, with reviewers returning year after year — in one case for ten consecutive years. The overall sentiment across reviews is highly positive, with guests describing the operation as well-run, personable, and worth the return trip. Peter Kay and his family (including Karen) are specifically called out for their attentiveness and professionalism, including a notable search-and-rescue situation where Peter located stranded anglers by air within minutes of arriving on scene. The outpost experience is described as rustic but functional, with solar-powered electricity, propane hot water and cooking, and lake-sourced running water — comfortable enough for a week-long stay, though guests should be aware that bathroom facilities are an outdoor privy rather than an indoor toilet.

Fishing is the clear centerpiece of the experience, and guests report impressive catches of walleye, pike, and lake trout across outpost lakes like Birch Lake. One group of five anglers landed over 900 walleye and pike in a single week, and even described that as a below-average year by their own standards — a telling sign of what the fishery can produce. The boats provided are heavy-duty 14.5-foot Alumarine craft with 15hp Yamaha motors, described as well-suited to Canadian fishing conditions. Birch Lake is singled out as a favorite among guests who have sampled multiple outposts in the Kay Air network.

There are no recurring complaints in the available reviews — guests appear genuinely satisfied across multiple visits. The one thing prospective guests should be prepared for is the rustic nature of the outpost setup, including the outdoor toilet, which is fairly standard for remote fly-in camps in Ontario but worth knowing in advance. This destination appears best suited for groups of fishing buddies, particularly walleye and pike anglers, who are comfortable with a self-sufficient, back-to-basics camp experience and are prioritizing fish counts and remote access over resort-style amenities.

We have done KayAir for 10 years!
We have done KayAir for 10 years! Peter is quite the character! We have done all of his outposts and like birch the best. We got into a couple of lakers on our last trip and are really itching to go back and try for them again.

2015 Canada Fishing Report – Birch Lake
Birch Lake, Ontario: 1172. Was that how many black flies, gnats, and mosquitoes attacked me in Canada this past week?! Nope–that was how many walleye and pike my friends Tracy, Mike, Larry, and their Florida buddy Tim caught July, 2014 on Birch Lake! Tim was unable to make the fly-in trip this year so the boys invited me to share a boat and cabin with them for a week. And…what a week it was! We caught 917 walleyes and pike during our time on the water from July 11 to July 17!! Even with the spectacular catch, the boys gave our week a C- rating compared to past years!! For the past nine years, my pals booked the week through Kay Air Service and Outposts. We drove to their home base at Lake Lac Seul on Friday July 10, spent the night, then flew to Birch early on the 11th with Peter Kay in his Beech 18. I found the modern cabin set up well with all the conveniences of home except for the short walk up the 'hill' to the outdoor toilet. They use solar panels to provide electricity and propane to fire the hot water heater and stove. A solar panel caught the sun's energy at the water pump on the water's edge to bring lake water to the cabin. We fished out of a heavy 14.5 foot deep Alumarine boat powered by a 15hp Yamaha. These boats are built for the fishing conditions found in Canadian waters! Every spot we went to we caught fish but the best spots were near dying weed beds anywhere from 4-12 feet. We did catch some nice bigger fish along the 12-14 foot ledges near the big rock walls. Thursday night the neighbor next door came over to say his Dad and a buddy had not returned for the day. We formed search parties and headed out early Friday morning. The son was able to reach Kay Air from a satellite phone at a nearby lodge. Our on the water search was not successful but when Pete arrived by air, he had them located within ten minutes. The men had run out of gas and spent the night on a small island a long way from our cabins. Karen, Peter, and their family took very good care of us and I would give them an A+ recommendation.
