The Fishing

The target species at Knobby's are walleye, northern pike, and lake trout. Nearly all of the outpost cabins are situated on the Cat River System, where lakes are connected by rapids that flow in and out. This moving water concentrates baitfish and keeps walleye and northern pike actively feeding throughout the season, including during mid-summer. Bamaji Lake, the site of the main lodge, covers over 80 miles of shoreline fed by numerous rivers and streams, offering a wide variety of fishing locations. Forty-inch-plus northern pike are caught and released at Bamaji each year. The outfitter notes it is not uncommon for guests to catch 100 fish per day.

Accommodations

The main camp on Bamaji Lake consists of six extra-large housekeeping cabins set among birch trees along a 300-foot sand beach. These cabins include showers, hot running water, electricity, and on-site caretaker service, and are set apart from one another for privacy, each with its own dock. The camp can accommodate groups of up to 40 people. The outpost cabins on the Cat River System are self-guided housekeeping units, each equipped with hot and cold running water, indoor showers, and solar lighting; individual outposts accommodate between 6 and 10 anglers. Knobby's flies supply runs to outpost guests every two days, weather permitting, bringing extra ice and other needed supplies.

Summarized Review Highlights

Based on available reviews, guests of Knobby's Fly-In Camps hold the outfitter in very high regard, consistently rating their experience at the top of the scale. The operation appears to have built a strong multi-generational reputation, with at least one reviewer returning decades later and finding the quality of the experience unchanged from their first visit in the 1980s. This kind of long-term consistency seems to be a meaningful part of the camp's appeal.

Guests specifically praise the fishing quality, the overall experience at the camps, and the staff. The pilot and ground crew are called out by name in reviews as being friendly and professional. Fry Lake is mentioned as one of the fishing destinations available through the outfitter, and guests describe trips there as memorable and successful.

With only two reviews available to summarize, it is not possible to identify any recurring complaints or concerns, nor can any patterns be confirmed with confidence. What can be said is that both reviewers were fully satisfied. Based on the reviews, Knobby's appears to be a particularly good fit for anglers looking for a traditional fly-in fishing experience, including those bringing family members or introducing a younger generation to the sport. The multi-decade loyalty suggested by one reviewer points to an operation that rewards repeat visits.

Went to Knobby's back in the 80's with my dad, returned 20 years later with my sons and had the fishing trip of a lifetime. Fishing and experience was as great the last two years as it was 20 years ago.
