Sioux Lookout, Ontario
Fly-in fishing outfitter operating a main lodge and six outpost cabins in northwestern Ontario, staging from Sioux Lookout.
Knobby's Fly-In Camps, based at 25 Wellington Street in Sioux Lookout, Ontario, operates one main lodge on Bamaji Lake and six outpost cabins spread across the Cat River System in northwestern Ontario. The outfitter has been offering fly-in fishing trips for over 40 years, with a reported repeat-guest rate of over 90 percent.
The main waterfront office in Sioux Lookout serves as the staging point for all trips. Guests check in there before being flown by floatplane to their chosen lodge or outpost. Outpost locations include Kezik Lake (Lemon Island), Kezik North, Devil's Rapids, Wesleyan Lake, Fry Lake, and a single cabin on Bamaji Lake, in addition to the main Bamaji Lake camp.
The target species at Knobby's are walleye, northern pike, and lake trout. Nearly all of the outpost cabins are situated on the Cat River System, where lakes are connected by rapids that flow in and out. This moving water concentrates baitfish and keeps walleye and northern pike actively feeding throughout the season, including during mid-summer. Bamaji Lake, the site of the main lodge, covers over 80 miles of shoreline fed by numerous rivers and streams, offering a wide variety of fishing locations. Forty-inch-plus northern pike are caught and released at Bamaji each year. The outfitter notes it is not uncommon for guests to catch 100 fish per day.
The main camp on Bamaji Lake consists of six extra-large housekeeping cabins set among birch trees along a 300-foot sand beach. These cabins include showers, hot running water, electricity, and on-site caretaker service, and are set apart from one another for privacy, each with its own dock. The camp can accommodate groups of up to 40 people. The outpost cabins on the Cat River System are self-guided housekeeping units, each equipped with hot and cold running water, indoor showers, and solar lighting; individual outposts accommodate between 6 and 10 anglers. Knobby's flies supply runs to outpost guests every two days, weather permitting, bringing extra ice and other needed supplies.
