Overview

Latto's Wilderness Cabins is a family-owned fly-in fishing and hunting outfitter based in Savant Lake, Ontario. The operation was founded by Art and Karen Latto, originally from Minnesota, who moved to Ontario in 1972 and built up an outfitting business before settling in the Savant Lake area. The outposts are now managed by their son Jacob and his wife Holly.

The outfitter operates two remote fly-in outpost camps: Raphael Outpost on St. Raphael Lake, a roughly 20-mile-long lake located within a provincial park, and a second outpost on Churchill Lake, which connects to St. Raphael Lake. Latto's holds sole outfitter access to both lakes, meaning guests encounter no other fishing parties on the water.

Established: 1972

Best for: Groups of anglers, including families and men's groups, seeking self-guided fly-in fishing on exclusive, low-pressure lakes in remote northwestern Ontario.
Best time: The operation runs through a summer season; specific open and close dates are not confirmed, but walleye and northern pike fishing is the primary draw throughout the season.

Highlights

Two exclusive fly-in outpost lakes
Walleye and northern pike fishing
Sole outfitter access to both lakes
Round-trip float plane included in rates
Boats, motors, and fuel included
Cabins sleep 6 to 18 guests
Airbase lodge accommodation available night before

The Fishing

Both outpost lakes are targeted primarily for walleye and northern pike. St. Raphael Lake holds walleye commonly in the 18 to 25-inch range, and northern pike that can exceed 40 inches. Churchill Lake also offers plentiful walleye at 18 inches and up, along with trophy northern pike potential. The lakes receive low fishing pressure due to exclusive outfitter access, and the water holds abundant structure including rapids and shoreline features suited to self-guided angling from aluminum boats included with each stay.

Accommodations

Cabins vary in size and can sleep between 6 and 18 guests depending on the outpost. Cabins are equipped with running water, bunk-style beds, fully equipped kitchens with propane stove and oven, refrigerator with freezer, barbecues, deep fryers, hot showers, wood stoves for heat, and cooking and eating utensils. Some camps have flush toilets while others use outhouses. A satellite phone is available for emergencies, and a generator is on-site for guest use. The outfitter also offers airbase accommodations at a lodge on Staunton Lake, which sleeps up to 14 guests and has full kitchen amenities, available the evening before a trip at no charge.

Summarized Review Highlights

Latto's Wilderness Outpost (also known as Latto's Wilderness Cabins) on Churchill Lake in northwestern Ontario has built a strong and loyal following over several decades, with returning guests spanning generations — some making their first trips as far back as 1986 and still coming back today. The overwhelming sentiment across reviews is extremely positive, with guests consistently rating it a top-tier fly-in fishing destination in Ontario. The current operators, Jake and Holly, are frequently praised by name for their attentiveness, hospitality, and willingness to go above and beyond — including getting up early to prepare breakfast before guests fly out. The outpost has recently undergone noticeable improvements, including remodeled cabins, new boats and motors, and upgraded shower and latrine facilities, all of which returning guests have noted with appreciation.

The fishing is the centerpiece of every review and described in terms that are hard to overstate — multiple boats catching upwards of 200 walleye per day, pike over 40 inches caught regularly, and numbers so high that guests joke their hands and wrists give out before the fish do. Walleye in the 18–22 inch range are the reliable bread and butter, with occasional fish pushing 25–28 inches. Pike are aggressive and plentiful, though reviewers generally characterize Churchill Lake as a volume and size lake rather than a dedicated trophy pike destination. The cabins are consistently described as clean, comfortable, and well-stocked — basic by design rather than by neglect. The lodge at Staunton Lake, where guests typically stay the night before flying in, is called out as a comfortable and welcoming stop. The float plane ride to Churchill Lake is short, under 20 minutes, and the lake itself — roughly 20 miles long — offers enough water that even large groups never feel crowded.

In terms of honest caveats, reviewers are upfront that Latto's is not a luxury operation. One long-time guest plainly noted it needs some upgrading, though that work appears to be ongoing. There is no five-star service, no guided fishing, and no frills — guests are expected to fish independently and be comfortable with a rustic wilderness setting. The drive to the float plane base from the U.S. Midwest is roughly nine hours, making the trip a meaningful logistical commitment. This destination is best suited for groups of fishing buddies or multi-generational families — fathers and sons being the most commonly mentioned combination — who prioritize high-volume walleye and pike fishing over comfort or guided instruction. It is particularly well matched for repeat fly-in travelers who know what they want out of a wilderness trip, though several reviewers also note that the fishing is productive enough that even less experienced anglers will have success.

Latest trip was the best in 40 years
Returned again with my son and his two sons. The 4 of us had a fantastic time even though the temps were 40-45 degrees. Cold does not stop the fishing. Caught walleyes like crazy as usual. I've been up since 1986 on and off for maybe 15 trips. This was the best yet. Boats are bigger, faster and cleaner. Cabin was completely remodeled since we were last up there. Experience of a lifetime again. Caught and released 42 and 38 inch northern didn't hurt either. Stay in the lodge the night before and you will be on the water by 9am.

Outstanding service, unbelievable fishing
My fishing buddies and I returned to Lotto's Wilderness Cabins on Churchill Lake this spring after a long absence, and were very pleasantly surprised by the many improvements and upgrades. We have been on many trips to Ontario, including 7 trips to Churchill Lake. Our last trip prior to this was 2007. We have tried several other fly-in places since then, but this is BY FAR the greatest fishing lake we have experienced. The lodge at Staunton Lake where we spent a night before flying in was exceptionally comfortable. Holly even got up early and made us breakfast!. The flight in is less than 20 minutes. The 3 cabins, shower rooms and latrines on Churchill have all been nicely upgraded and the cabins are well stocked, with comfortable beds. The boats and motors are all new, and the 9.9 hp 4 strokes really hum-- they are the perfect size for the lake. The late May fishing was outstanding-- 4 of us in 2 boats caught in excess of 300 fish in 5 days. Walleyes averaged 19-21", with a couple at 25". We caught lots of pike in the 28-36" range. Holly and Jake are running an outstanding camp here. I can't recommend it highly enough.

An unforgettable experience!
I spent 4 nights on Churchill Lake and had a fantastic experience. The cabins were clean, comfortable, and well supplied with everything we needed for our stay. We had great service from Holly and Jacob who catered to our every need, and the fishing was absolutely incredible! There is something very special and calming that comes with the solitude on Churchill Lake and it is definitely worth the trip!

Great fly in
Been going here on and off since 1986. Always a great time for fishing. Needs a little upgrading but they are working on it. Good idea to: "have you fishing as soon as you can" as their motto. Which is all we really wanted. Who stays in the cabin that much. Great fly ins. Great fishing. Don't keep the larger Northerns so they reproduce more. Keep all the Walleyes you can handle. As fast as you can real them in if you know where to go. Holly and Jake are making a great place after Karen and Art moved on. Will always go there rather than anywhere else. My grandson is now an avid admirer of Fly ins because of the awesome experience. He has been there 5 times already. This year his Dad and I took him so it was a great time. Matt hadn't been there in 20 years and enjoyed it again. If you can't catch 200 fish /day/boat you are fishing IN the boat not in the water.

AWESOME FISHING
The cabins are clean and basic, but the fishing is the best I've ever experienced. If you want walleye, try 100 a day (no kidding). Cast and troll for northern. Caught 3 over 40". Started going 30 years ago and the fish are just getting bigger.

Hungry fish!
All I can add is that you catch so many fish your hands hurt when you come out! Great memories! The plane wreckage is a must find! When you find it throw some spoons and get ready! Whoever this jeff Olson guy is obviously is boring If he fishes under the boat all day. However, by the look on his face when holding that 41 inch jack, it seems he might secretly love the slim! Remember, eye's are a food source for the mighty jack fish!

It's the fishing that counts!
Me and a group of father's and son's started heading to visit Art Latto and his wife Karen at Art Latto's Wilderness Cabins about 16 years ago. About a 9 hour drive from Minneapolis to float planes...it is a committment, but well worth the trip. If you go fishing in NW Ontario to see 5 star service, breakfast in bed, and a swim-up bar... look elswhere. Latto's in known for fishing in beautiful surroundings for a reasonable price. You can't find a fly-in that gives you more fish per dollar spent. It's a short float plane ride starting just north of Savant Lake, Ontario. There are days when multiple boats catch more than 200 walleyes in a day. Art & Karen's son Jake & new wife Holly now run the place and the air service is outsourced. Latto's have two lakes, and each of them has only one camp on the lake....Latto's. If you see a boat... it's a member of your party. Churchill is roughly 20 miles long and provides endless nooks, crannies, islands and bays to explore while staying sheltered on windy days. The fishing is phenomenal and you will never explore the entire lake. St. Rafael is a little smaller but the fishing is extraordinary. Latto's can accomodate large parties. Our group of 16 or so has tried other outfits such as Allanwater- (train-in), and Rusty Meyers- (Fly-in) and we keep coming back to Latto's because no matter your fishing ability or age...you'll catch so many fish your wrists will fall off. The Pike are aggressive and although I wouldn't call it a trophy Pike lake, they get pretty big and aren't shy. Each trip we catch a number of Pike over 40" (by accident). The walleyes are plentiful in the 18-22 range but there are many days when we find big pockets of 23-25"...the largest yet is 28.5" but that is rare. If you are looking to get started on fly-in's... you might want to try somewhere else first...because once you go to Latto's you may never go anywhere else.
