Overview

Lauzon Aviation is a family-run commercial air service and tourist outfitter operating out of Algoma Mills, Ontario, approximately seven miles east of Blind River and roughly midway between Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie. The operation is run by Reino and Rita Makela and family, and has been providing fly-in fishing and flight services for over 50 years. In addition to fishing trips, Lauzon Aviation offers charter flights, sightseeing, and fly-in hunting packages.

The outfitter operates nine rustic outpost cabins on nine separate lakes, each lake featuring a different mix of fish species. Two float plane bases serve guests: the primary base at Lake Lauzon off Highway 17, and a secondary base at Marquette Lake off Highway 144, approximately 90 miles north of Sudbury. Each cabin is exclusively reserved for one group at a time, giving guests sole access to their lake.

Best for: Self-guided anglers, families, and small groups seeking a do-it-yourself fly-in experience with exclusive access to a remote Northern Ontario lake.
Best time: The operation runs through the open-water season for fishing, with spring and fall also offering hunting opportunities; topwater bass fishing is noted as especially productive in June and July.

The Fishing

Lauzon Aviation's outpost lakes collectively offer a wide range of species, including Lake Trout, Rainbow Trout, Speckled Trout (Brook Trout), Splake, Smallmouth Bass, Largemouth Bass, Northern Pike, Walleye, and Whitefish. Different lakes are stocked with different species, allowing anglers to choose a destination based on their target fish. Some lakes feature multiple trout species on the same body of water, while others are better known for bass or pike.

Fishing is self-guided and do-it-yourself in style. Anglers have the lake entirely to themselves for the duration of their stay. Topwater fishing for bass is noted as particularly productive in June and July. The trip to Robb Lake, for example, is a 38-mile flight offering Brook Trout, Rainbow Trout, Lake Trout, and Splake on a 457-acre lake that receives very little fishing pressure.

Accommodations

Each outpost features a simple, rustic cabin furnished with beds and mattresses, a table and chairs, and basic kitchen equipment including a propane fridge, propane stove, dishes, pots, pans, utensils, and a sink. A woodstove provides cabin heat when temperatures drop, and a propane BBQ is available outside. There is no running water or electricity; water is hauled by pail from the lake. Some locations include an outdoor wood sauna and hot water showers. Meals are self-catered — guests bring their own food and sleeping bags. The package includes the flight in and out, a fully stocked cabin, a boat and motor with gas, and propane for cabin appliances.

Summarized Review Highlights

Lauzon Aviation, a family-run fly-in outfitter based near Blind River (Algoma Mills), Ontario, draws consistently positive reviews across all available feedback. The operation has been running for over 30 years and is now managed by three generations of the Makela family. Guests regularly describe it as welcoming, trustworthy, and well-organized, with several reviewers noting they returned for repeat trips or made it an annual tradition. The overall tone across reviews is one of genuine satisfaction, with no negative experiences reported in the available feedback.

What guests praise most is the quality and variety of fishing across Lauzon's nine outpost lakes, each targeting different species including walleye, northern pike, smallmouth and largemouth bass, brook trout, lake trout, and rainbow trout. Reviewers highlight the pristine, uncrowded nature of the lakes and the sense of true wilderness remoteness. The DIY outpost model — where guests fly in and have an entire lake to themselves — is frequently cited as a major draw. The package includes the flight, a fully stocked cabin with kitchen equipment, a boat and motor with fuel, and propane for appliances. Anglers simply bring food, sleeping bags, and gear. Reviewers also note the affordability of the operation relative to comparable fly-in experiences, and the warmth and local knowledge of the Makela family.

There are no recurring complaints in the available reviews. The cabins are described as rustic, which is consistent with a DIY outpost experience rather than a guided lodge, so guests expecting comfort amenities beyond the basics should be aware of that upfront. This destination appears best suited for self-sufficient anglers — whether solo travellers, groups of fishing buddies, or families — who want remote, affordable access to quality multi-species fishing without guides or full-service lodge amenities. Fly anglers specifically are well served, with reviewers detailing successful trips using dry flies, streamers, and topwater patterns across multiple lake systems.

Lauzon Aviation – A Remote Fly-in Fishing Outpost on Robb Lake for Trout Fishing
Awaiting me is a host of friendly services and outfitters, all wanting to help make my experience the most rewarding possible. Take my trip for example with Lauzon Aviation. One of the region's oldest service outfitters is now run by three complete generations of the Makela family. As with all outfitters and guides that I have met in the area, the Makelas take great pride in their independent knowledge and skills affording them a modest lifestyle in the north. In no time at all, these northern traders make you feel very welcome and secure with them, as your guest. This particular lake that I was allowed to visit, Robb Lake, was pristine to me, clean, quiet and filled with old historical speckled trout and lake trout and some bonus-stocked rainbows. Catching one of these species is not difficult when you fly into an Algoma lake. Brightly coloured spoons, trolling across any one of the numerous underwater ridges find some active fish. And when you are allowed into a lake that has been respected so well by other visitors that it is hard to find any evidence of human presence, hooking into a fish makes you feel like the 1600s exploring voyageur! I have fished many regions and Algoma native fishes are surely vivid, translucent, colourful subspecies all in themselves. I almost felt guilty keeping a couple for an open-fire supper! I assure you, after all my years, that if your choice is Algoma, you will be welcomed, made to feel like a local, speechlessly awe-struck, successful on more levels than expected and immediately start to plan your return!

Fly-in with Lauzon Aviation: A Remote Fishing Experience Like No Other
For those anglers who are looking for a wilderness fishing trip on a budget, there are several options. One of my favourites is through Lauzon Aviation located in Algoma Mills, Ontario. Lauzon Aviation is a family-run business that has been helping anglers access world-class fishing for over 30 years. They have nine rustic outpost cabins on nine separate lakes, each system featuring different species. On one lake you can have walleye and northern pike and on another, brook trout. These DIY (do-it-yourself) fishing trips are great for groups of anglers or families. We went to Hastie Lake which has incredible smallmouth and largemouth bass fishing. Located at the foothills of the Hastie Lake Mountains, the cabin is surrounded by magnificent scenery on a pine point with a sandy beach nearby. Each day we cast topwater flies and lures and caught lots of bass to 5 pounds. Lauzon Aviation supplies flight in and out, fully stocked cabin (including kitchen equipment), boat and motor with gas, plus propane for the cabin appliances. Anglers just need to bring their food, sleeping bags and fishing gear. Then you have the whole lake to yourself! Great fishing and totally remote! Lauzon Aviation is ideal because it is affordable and accessible.

Do-It-Yourself Fly-In Fishing – Lauzon Aviation
There are dozens of services that provide fly-in remote outposts and one of my favourites is Lauzon Aviation located near Blind River Ontario. Lauzon Air Service is a family-run business that has been helping anglers access great fishing for over 30 years. They have nine rustic outpost cabins on nine separate lakes, each system featuring different species. On one lake you can have walleye and pike and on another rainbow and lake trout. These DIY (do-it-yourself) fishing trips are perfect for groups of anglers or families. You have the lake entirely to yourself for the whole week, a nice experience for those who want solitude! An example of one remote outpost they offer is Hastie Lake which has incredible smallmouth and largemouth bass fishing. Each day we cast topwater flies and lures and caught lots of bass to five pounds. Near shore yellow, orange and black poppers worked well for both species. On the main lake, we found smelt patterns like Murdich Minnows or Scotty's McFly were deadly. Another lake we tried on a repeat visit several years later was Blue Lake which has good populations of lake and rainbow trout. We used sink-tip lines and full-sinking lines to take white streamer patterns down to approximately 8-12 feet to connect with the trout. In the early morning or late evening, we had success casting streamers in the top three feet of the lake as rainbow trout were busting the surface chasing minnows. Very visually exciting and fast-action! The small stream running into and out of the lake has a healthy population of brook trout which are fun to catch on dry flies and wooly buggers. They provide the flight in and out, fully stocked cabin (including kitchen equipment), boat and motor with gas, plus propane for the cabin appliances. Anglers just need to bring their food, sleeping bags and fishing gear. Then you have the whole lake to yourself! Great fishing and totally remote. Lauzon Air Service is ideal because it is affordable and accessible.

Getting There

Guests are flown to their outpost cabin by float plane — specifically a DeHavilland Beaver bush plane — departing from one of two air bases. The primary base is at Lake Lauzon on Highway 17 in Algoma Mills, and the secondary base is at Marquette Lake on Highway 144 north of Sudbury. Flight times to the outpost camps are approximately 20 minutes each way, though some locations are closer. The staging area is easily accessible by road from Highway 17.
