Overview

Leuenberger Air Service, based in Nakina, Ontario, was founded in 1960 when Ernie Leuenberger Senior began the family-owned fly-in business with a borrowed canoe and a tent. Today the operation includes 12 remote fly-in outpost camps, each situated on a separate lake, plus a full-service lodge on Kagianagami Lake (known as Kag Lodge), along with its own air service flying guests to and from camp.

Nakina serves as the staging point for all trips. The outposts and lodge are accessible by air only, with guests flown in aboard De Havilland Turbo Otters. In addition to fishing, the operation offers fly-in moose hunting in the fall, with hunts conducted in Wildlife Management Units 17, 18A, and 18B.

Established: 1960

Best for: Self-guided anglers, small groups, and families seeking remote housekeeping outpost fishing or a full-service lodge option in northern Ontario.

The Fishing

The lakes north of Nakina hold walleye, northern pike, lake trout, brook trout, jumbo perch, and whitefish. Walleye fishing is the primary draw at the outpost camps, with guests commonly reporting catches of 50 to 100 fish per day. Northern pike in the 40- to 48-inch range are regularly targeted, and many large pike are incidentally caught while fishing for other species. Lake trout are available exclusively at Kagianagami Lake, where fish in the 20-pound range are common and larger trout up to 35 pounds are occasionally caught. Four of the outpost camps provide access to brook trout on rivers including the Ogoki, Kapikotongua, Little Current, Opichuan, Cat Tail, and Albany Rivers, with trout in the 4-pound range considered typical and fish over 5 pounds possible on the Albany River. The outpost fishing is self-guided housekeeping style, with each camp supplied with aluminum boats and motors.

Accommodations

Outpost camps are self-catering housekeeping cabins equipped with a full propane stove and oven, propane refrigerator with small freezer, running water and a shower (water is not potable and must be boiled or brought in), solar-powered lighting, and all cooking and eating utensils. Outpost guests must supply their own bedding and towels. Each camp comes with 14-foot aluminum boats with 9.9 HP motors. Kag Lodge on Kagianagami Lake is a step up in comfort, offering fully equipped cabins with flush toilets, hot and cold running water, generator-supplied electricity, full-sized refrigerator/freezer, and provided bedding. The lodge operates under American Plan, Modified American Plan, or Housekeeping Plan options, with American Plan meals prepared by a chef in the main lodge dining room. The lodge uses 14- or 16-foot aluminum boats with 15 HP motors. Outpost cabin sizes range to accommodate between 4 and 12 guests.

Summarized Review Highlights

Leuenberger Air Service, based in Nakina, Ontario, has built a strong reputation over more than half a century as a reliable and well-run fly-in fishing operation in northern Ontario. Guest sentiment across reviews is overwhelmingly positive, with multiple reviewers returning year after year — in some cases across generations — and at least one review published in Outdoor Canada magazine. The operation is consistently described as friendly, well-organized, and safe, with staff who are accommodating and willing to go the extra mile, such as making arrangements for guests who wanted to bring kayaks. The remote setting, accessible only by floatplane, is a major draw, with flights typically running around 40 minutes north of Nakina.

Guests consistently praise the quality and quantity of fishing across Leuenberger's various lakes, particularly Kag Lake and Whittle Lake. Walleye fishing is singled out most often, described as reliably productive throughout the season and across different lake conditions. Northern pike fishing is also highlighted as exceptional, and lake trout and brook trout add variety. Outpost cabins are described as clean and comfortable, with running water, lighting, wood-burning stoves, barbecues, and adequate boats provided. Even guests on the more budget-conscious housekeeping plan noted thoughtful touches like morning coffee delivery and a communal fish fry prepared by lodge staff mid-week.

There are very few complaints across the reviews available, and no recurring concerns are raised about service, safety, or value. One reviewer noted that Kag Lake is large enough that reaching certain fishing areas, like the southern pike beds, requires a half-hour boat ride with the provided 15 HP motors — something worth knowing when planning a trip. A minor fog delay was mentioned but handled without issue. Overall, Leuenberger Air appears best suited for walleye and pike anglers of all experience levels, groups of friends or family looking for a remote but comfortable fly-in experience, multi-generational fishing trips, and self-sufficient guests comfortable with housekeeping-style outpost setups. It is not a luxury lodge, but reviews suggest it consistently delivers on what it promises.

Leuenberger Air Service: Your Ticket to Ontario's Best Fishing
If like me, you are someone who loves to road trip and go on do-it-yourself (DIY) fishing trips, you're in luck! I have just the place for you, Leuenberger Air Service, which operates out of Nakina, Ontario. As we arrived at the airbase the following morning, Rob and I were greeted by the head pilot, Jamie Sofonoff. Welcomed with a big smile and warm handshake, we instantly felt at ease. Leuenberger Air Service runs its operation seamlessly, and after a short delay due to fog, the dock hands had the plane loaded and we were up in the air in no time at all. A quick 40-minute flight due north soon had us landing on a remote back lake, and taxiing past our home for the week. Nestled on the shore sits a cozy, clean two-bedroom outpost cabin, equipped with running water and lighting. The outpost has everything a person could ask for, including a wood-burning stove and oven, in addition to a barbecue on the deck. Leuenberger Air Service equipped the outpost with two boats for guests, ideal for our fishing adventure. The lake is well known as a number's lake for northern pike. We quickly found a run that was loaded with whitefish and walleye. The walleye were by the number, and we caught them no matter where we were throughout the entire system. The days flew by, and we ended with a cold drink and a good conversation around the campfire. We were even lucky enough to witness the Northern Lights, clear and bright in the remote northern wilderness. Rob and I had a fantastic trip, filled to the brim with adventure and exploring. The fishing was fantastic, the setting unparalleled. [Published in Northern Ontario Travel / The New Fly Fisher, by certified casting instructor Mikey Metcalfe.]

Nakina fly-in outpost offers endless walleye and trophy pike—all on a budget
I recently returned from one of those places: Whittle Lake, in northern Ontario, and it was unforgettable. Situated 100 km north of Nakina, Ontario, Whittle Lake is home to an outpost cabin operated by the long-running Leuenberger Air Service—a fixture in northern fishing and hunting circles for over half a century. Whittle Lake is small, just 4 km from end to end, and rarely more than half a click wide. The surrounding land is mostly low and flat, and the lake is ringed by scrubby forest, bogs and meadows. And in six days of fishing my group caught, well, we quickly lost count. But we easily had hundreds of walleye and pike, including some pretty memorable specimens. A huge thank you to Claudine Leuenberger and the whole team at Leuenberger Air Service for working with us on this great trip. Not only are they running a friendly, well-organized and safe operation, they gladly made the extra effort to accommodate our kayaks. We truly appreciate it. Kag Lodge Housekeeping Trip – September 2011
This was a Leuenberger Lodge trip enjoyed by a party of 5 from September 4-8, 2011. We chose the housekeeping plan to keep expenses down, but it doesn't matter what plan you are on as Tuesday evening there was a fish fry with all the fixings for all guests prepared by the lodge staff. The cabins were spacious, with linens and comforters, and an indoor toilet! One of the girls would also knock on the door at 6 am with a pot of freshly brewed coffee. A nice touch for being on the Housekeeping plan. Kag Lake is huge at over 20,000 acres of crystal clear water. It is well known for its large walleyes, and has some lake trout and pike fishing as well. Brook trout are available on the Opichuan River as well. Boats are nice 16 foot size and powered by 15 HP outboards. Even with that it took a half hour or so to motor down to the pike weed beds at the south end of the lake.

The Kag – my favourite place on earth
I first visited Kag when I was 13 years old with my dad. It is where my love for fishing was born. 33 years later I am still coming up to the Kag, with my buddies and my kids and it has become part of their DNA too. I've spent a lot of tough days on the water back home fishing in southern Ontario. But we call our trips to the Kag our 'catching trips' as it often doesn't feel like fishing. It is a place where the avid fisherman and the fly by night guys can fill the boat with relative ease. Over the years I have managed to fish the lake in every month of the season and can't say which I love the most. The lake evolves through the season from hundreds of shallow post spawn walleye in early season to still incredible numbers but fatter deep water walleye in August. The Lakers while sometimes moody, are always a great treat. If Northern's are what floats your boat, you can catch those till your arms fall off. I've had the chance to fish all over including the North West Territories & Nunavut and can say that despite this, I always prefer the Kag more than any other place I've fished. It is as remote as you'd ever want, but with the creature comfort of home. The fish are often co-operative and for the cost, nothing else compares.
