Lynn Lake, Manitoba
Family-run outfitter operating six fly-in outpost camps and a lodge in remote northwestern Manitoba since 1988.
Lynn Lake Fly-In Outpost Camps is owned and operated by Russ and Lori Bettschen, who have run the operation in northern Manitoba since 1988. The business includes six fly-in outpost camps on six separate lakes, as well as Mahekun Lake Lodge, all situated in a roughly 5,000-square-mile exclusive area northwest of Lynn Lake, Manitoba. The Bettschens are originally from Minnesota and have served clients from ten different countries over the course of more than three decades.
The operation offers both fly-in fishing and guided hunting packages. The six fishing lakes are designated as High Quality fisheries by the Province of Manitoba and are located within approximately 70 miles of Lynn Lake. The outfitter holds exclusive outfitting rights to its area and carefully manages harvest to maintain resource quality.
Established: 1988
The six fly-in lakes offer fishing for northern pike, walleye, lake trout, and arctic grayling. Each lake provides pike and walleye fishing, while lake trout and arctic grayling are available at select lakes. Arctic grayling are found in the river outlets, particularly the Katimiwi River flowing from Kat Lake, where anglers can use light spinning tackle or fly rods in rapids and pools. Due to the remote location and short season, the lakes average between 12 and 24 anglers per year. A strict catch-and-release policy applies to all northern pike over 30 inches, and guests have a realistic chance at qualifying for Manitoba Master Angler awards for pike measuring 41 inches or larger.
Fishing is self-guided from the outpost camps, with each lake having only one cabin. Boats and motors are provided. May and June are noted as particularly productive for northern pike and walleye, while lake trout fishing shifts to deeper water from July through August.
The outpost camps each accommodate 6 to 12 guests per camp and are fully equipped with hot showers, running water, propane lighting and heat, a propane cook stove and oven, barbecue grill, fish fryers, refrigerator, deep freeze, cooking utensils, boats, motors, mixed gas, life preservers, and satellite phones. Guests at the outpost camps cook their own meals on a housekeeping basis. Mahekun Lake Lodge operates on an American Plan with home-cooked meals and daily maid service; the lodge cabins are carpeted, have hot showers, controlled heat, and 24-hour power. The lodge can accommodate groups of up to 40 people and provides 17-foot deep-hull aluminum boats with 25-hp Mercury motors.
