Overview

Mattice Lake Outfitters is a family-run operation based in Armstrong Station, Ontario, roughly 250 kilometres north of Thunder Bay. The Elliot family — Don and Annette Elliot — has operated fly-in fishing and hunting trips for over 40 years, offering access to a collection of outpost camps and two wilderness lodges set along the Ogoki-Albany river system in the vast wilderness north of Armstrong. The operation also arranges canoe trips into Wabakimi Wilderness Park, Ontario's largest wilderness park.

The outfitter runs its own air service using de Havilland Beaver and Turbo Otter seaplanes, flying guests from the seaplane base on Mattice Lake to camps located approximately 45 to 70 miles to the north. In addition to fly-in camps, Mattice Lake Outfitters maintains five modern guest cabins at its base on Mattice Lake and McKenzie Lake for guests arriving the night before a trip. The operation also offers moose hunting in the fall season.

Best for: Groups seeking self-guided, fly-in housekeeping trips on remote, lightly fished lakes in northwestern Ontario, including families, groups of friends, and anglers targeting walleye, northern pike, or lake trout.
Best time: The fishing season opens in mid-to-late May (walleye season opens the third Saturday in May) and runs through the fall; walleye and northern pike fishing is productive throughout the open water season, while lake trout fishing on deeper lakes is available from spring through fall.

The Fishing

The outpost camps and lodges sit on the Ogoki-Albany river system, a network of lakes varying in size from around 1,800 acres to more than 35,000 acres. Target species include walleye, northern pike, lake trout, brook trout, sturgeon, and whitefish, though not all species are present on every lake. Walleye are found across many of the lakes, with fish commonly averaging 2.5 to 4 pounds. Northern pike run large on several lakes, with fish reported to 25 pounds and beyond. Lake trout fishing is available on deeper lakes such as Luella Lake, where depths exceed 100 feet. Brook trout fishing, on a catch-and-release basis, is available on certain rivers flowing out of the outpost lakes.

Guests fish from late-model 14- and 16-foot Lund boats powered by 15 hp four-stroke outboard motors. Each camp is stocked with gas and equipment. Wildlife including moose, woodland caribou, black bears, timber wolves, osprey, and bald eagles is commonly observed from the water and shoreline.

Accommodations

The fly-in outpost camps are self-guided housekeeping operations. Cabins range from two- to three-bedroom units and are equipped with solar-powered electricity with LED lighting, handcrafted pine furnishings, full-size electric refrigerators, separate electric freezers, propane ranges, propane hot water heaters, wood stoves for heat, hot and cold running water, showers, decks, fire pits, and screened fish-cleaning houses. All cooking utensils, pots, pans, and dishes are provided. Camps are stocked with firewood and ice. Two-way radios are installed at every camp for safety and communication with the base. The two wilderness lodges — Whitewater Lake and the Ogoki Reservoir lodge — each have multiple guest cabins and host more than one group during the fishing season.

The variety of species and accessible fishing spots — including productive areas right in front of camp — are frequently praised. Cabin quality is another standout: reviewers describe them as among the nicest they have encountered on remote fly-in trips, noting comfortable beds, fully stocked kitchens, wood stoves, and scenic views. Boats, motors, and logistical support such as ample ice supply are also called out positively. Wildlife sightings including moose, caribou, bear, and eagles add to the experience for many guests.

Luella Lake Outpost w Mattice Lake Outfitters Aug 2019
Again, I would recommend Mattice Lake Outfitters. They have nice cabins, good boats and motors and they give you PLENTY OF ICE!! I nicknamed Don the 'ICE KING'. The map shows where we had success catching the different species, reason we chose Luella Lake this time so that all of us could catch walleye, lake trout, brook trout and pike. A few of us had the opportunity to fish the outflow of the Attwood river leaving Luella for Brook Trout. I did very well catching 37 of them in 2.5 hours. Mattice does have a boat in a portage lake attached to the inflow of the Attwood river coming into Luella. There each of us caught bucket loads of good eating size walleye and a few nice pike. MLO sets the bar pretty high and all their stuff is top notch.

Mattice Lake Outfitters - Northern Ontario Fishing
The perfect summer fishing trip is with Mattice Lake Outfitters in northern Ontario, Canada. Their fly-in fishing & hunting trips are professionally organized and expertly run. When we went in late July we could not have asked for a better experience. From Don, the owner, to our pilots and their support staff everything we could ever need was organized. The fishing was superb. We caught walleye and pike ranging in varying sizes.

Whitewater Lake With Mattice Lake Outfitters
Hey guys, in mid September my group of 4 travelled north to fish Whitewater Lake with MLO north of Armstrong Station in Ontario. Considering the number of fly in trips I've done it was kind of surprising I've never fished with them before. Surprising because of the glowing reviews this particular outfitter always receives. The trip was a huge success! The cabin we stayed on at Whitewater was easily the nicest I've ever had the pleasure of enjoying on a remote fly in, and that's saying a lot! We were there primarily to hunt for trophy pike and ultimately we caught them although we did have to adapt and change our tactics. Walleyes when we fished for them were plentiful and easy to catch. What was really nice was one of the best spots was a long sand bar almost directly in front of the camp. There were always fish to be caught there but they really moved onto it en masse in the evening.

We've been going to Canada for a few years now and the staff at Mattice Lake Outfitters is one of the best we have ever fished with. Year after year they give us the best fishing vacation we could ever have. Never a hassle, never a problem, and they have gone above and beyond the call several times when family emergencies came up and we needed to get out of there fast. I can't imagine fishing with any other outfitter up there.

WoW! Well that made a simple trip for work even better! The cabins are cozy with a beautiful view! The bed was more comfortable then mine at home. Kitchen came fully stocked with everything I needed to cook, there was even a coffee maker! And the wood stove was ready to go with fire wood and kindling. I will be returning here every time I come up for work or pleasure. Five stars!

Along with a group of other couples and their children, we have been using Mattice Lake Outfitters for 10 plus years. We enjoy the short flight to the Ogoki Reservoir where you are never more than 10 minutes away from great fishing holes. The cabins are first rate and Mattice Outfitters make you feel like a part of their family. Someone in our group always sees some wildlife whether it be eagles, moose, caribou, bear or all of the above. The scenery is breathtaking.
