Overview

Meta Lake Lodge and Outpost Camps is operated by John and Cheryl Wiersema and is located in the Arctic Watershed of the Albany River system, approximately 43 miles northwest of Nakina, Ontario. The operation includes a full-service main lodge on Meta Lake and three self-contained outpost camps: Caribou Island Outpost, Channel View Outpost, and Ara Lake Camp. Non-guided black bear hunts are also available from outpost camp locations.

Meta Lake is a glacial-cut Canadian Shield lake that is shallower than surrounding waters, causing it to ice out earlier in spring and drawing fish from the broader system into concentrated feeding areas. The interconnected waters of Meta, Ara, and Brace Lakes are all accessible from the main lodge or outpost positions.

Best for: Anglers and small groups seeking a self-guided fly-in walleye and northern pike fishery, including those who want a choice between a full-service lodge and more remote self-contained outpost camps.
Best time: The season runs from mid-May through mid-September, with spring and early summer producing strong walleye action at the main lake and July through August being the peak period for trophy northern pike.

The Fishing

Meta Lake supports walleye, northern pike, and jumbo perch from opening day through the season. Because Meta Lake is shallower than adjoining lakes, it ices out earlier in spring, concentrating walleye and northern pike from the entire system in its waters. Early-season walleye hold on points, shoals, and the mid-lake island cluster, while fish move into weedy sections and along weed lines as summer progresses. Live bait rigs, jigs tipped with minnows, spoons, crank baits, and spinners are all productive methods. Trophy northern pike are particularly active from July through August, relating to developed weed beds, fast-breaking points, and rock piles. Ara Lake, directly accessible from the Meta Lake system, is considered a strong walleye and perch destination in its own right and is well-suited to jig fishing and trolling.

Accommodations

The main lodge offers fully equipped log cabins with living rooms, kitchens, 24-hour generated electricity, electric refrigerators, propane stoves, hot showers, sinks, and flush toilets. The two large bedrooms in each cabin can sleep six to eight guests. Wood stoves provide evening heat, with split wood supplied at depots around camp. The main lodge dining hall operates on the American Plan and includes a complimentary mid-week fish fry. Wi-Fi, satellite TV, and tackle supplies are also available at the main lodge. Outpost camps at Caribou Island and Channel View are solar-powered housekeeping units with propane appliances, hot showers, and fully equipped kitchens. Ara Lake Camp consists of four solar-powered housekeeping cabins with propane refrigerators, propane ranges, running water, a shared shower house with on-demand hot water, and a fish cleaning station.

Summarized Review Highlights

Meta Lake Lodge enjoys an overwhelmingly positive reputation among its guests, with reviewers consistently awarding it top marks. The lodge has built a loyal, returning clientele — several reviewers note they have been coming back annually for a decade or more, with one guest maintaining a 30-year streak. Owners John and Cheryl are frequently mentioned by name as a core part of what makes the experience exceptional, described as wonderful hosts who keep the camp running smoothly.

Guests consistently praise the quality of fishing above all else, describing walleye and northern pike action as outstanding, with yellow perch also making an appearance. The 18-foot cedar strip boats and reliable motors receive specific positive mention, and the accommodations are described as comfortable and well-maintained. Food is highlighted as a genuine strength, with Cheryl's cooking called "absolutely outstanding." The overall atmosphere appears to be relaxed, well-organized, and focused on putting anglers on fish.

Based on the available reviews, there are no recurring complaints or notable concerns to flag — every reviewer expresses strong satisfaction across fishing, lodging, staff, and food. It is worth noting that the review set is small and uniformly positive, so prospective guests may want to seek out additional sources for a broader picture. Meta Lake Lodge appears best suited for dedicated walleye and pike anglers, particularly groups of fishing buddies or returning guests who value consistency, a well-run operation, and strong catches over a remote or adventure-focused experience.

Meta Lake Lodge Fishing Report – June 2019
Well we recovered from the opener and things are rolling along here at Meta lake. The fishing is flat out, nothing short of stupid good. Almost every angler in camp has had an awesome time catching tons of walleye and northern pike. Amazingly some very good catches of yellow perch have also been coming in, although their location moves from day to day, and predicting where they will be is very tough. As usual the bite is going well using plastics tipped with minnows as well as crank baits. The fish location throughout the lake has been shallow to start the season. Obviously here in the north is no different than anywhere in the country, and it was a cooler than average early season. This early-season cooler weather has kept the fish very accessible in the shallows and everybody is having a ball up here at camp just pounding on them. Of course, Cheryl has the camp running in fine fashion and the food is absolutely outstanding as always.

Exclusively fished here for the last 11 years
I've fished all over Canada in the past and for the last 11 years have exclusively fished at Meta Lake Lodge and Outpost Camps during all different summer months. The fishing is off the charts, accommodations are great and camp hosts, John & Cheryl, are top notch. As such, our group has always had a fantastic trip with lots & lots of fish!!!

World class walleye and pike fishing experience
If you are looking for a world class walleye and pike fishing experience look no farther than Meta Lake Lodge and Outpost Camps. I have been coming to Meta Lake Lodge annually for the last 30 years. The current proprietors John and Cheryl are wonderful people and will make your experience even better. The lodging is excellent, the 18 foot cedar boats are comfortable and their motors are reliable. I could go anywhere in the world if I wanted, but I choose Meta Lake Lodge for its quality of fishing and comfort.
