Nakina, Ontario
Family-run fly-in fishing operation on Meta Lake in the Albany River system, northwestern Ontario, with a main lodge and three outpost camps.
Meta Lake Lodge and Outpost Camps is operated by John and Cheryl Wiersema and is located in the Arctic Watershed of the Albany River system, approximately 43 miles northwest of Nakina, Ontario. The operation includes a full-service main lodge on Meta Lake and three self-contained outpost camps: Caribou Island Outpost, Channel View Outpost, and Ara Lake Camp. Non-guided black bear hunts are also available from outpost camp locations.
Meta Lake is a glacial-cut Canadian Shield lake that is shallower than surrounding waters, causing it to ice out earlier in spring and drawing fish from the broader system into concentrated feeding areas. The interconnected waters of Meta, Ara, and Brace Lakes are all accessible from the main lodge or outpost positions.
Meta Lake supports walleye, northern pike, and jumbo perch from opening day through the season. Because Meta Lake is shallower than adjoining lakes, it ices out earlier in spring, concentrating walleye and northern pike from the entire system in its waters. Early-season walleye hold on points, shoals, and the mid-lake island cluster, while fish move into weedy sections and along weed lines as summer progresses. Live bait rigs, jigs tipped with minnows, spoons, crank baits, and spinners are all productive methods. Trophy northern pike are particularly active from July through August, relating to developed weed beds, fast-breaking points, and rock piles. Ara Lake, directly accessible from the Meta Lake system, is considered a strong walleye and perch destination in its own right and is well-suited to jig fishing and trolling.
The main lodge offers fully equipped log cabins with living rooms, kitchens, 24-hour generated electricity, electric refrigerators, propane stoves, hot showers, sinks, and flush toilets. The two large bedrooms in each cabin can sleep six to eight guests. Wood stoves provide evening heat, with split wood supplied at depots around camp. The main lodge dining hall operates on the American Plan and includes a complimentary mid-week fish fry. Wi-Fi, satellite TV, and tackle supplies are also available at the main lodge. Outpost camps at Caribou Island and Channel View are solar-powered housekeeping units with propane appliances, hot showers, and fully equipped kitchens. Ara Lake Camp consists of four solar-powered housekeeping cabins with propane refrigerators, propane ranges, running water, a shared shower house with on-demand hot water, and a fish cleaning station.
