The Fishing

Munroe Lake supports northern pike, lake trout, arctic grayling, walleye, and whitefish. Northern pike in the 50-inch range are reported regularly, and the lake's shallow weedy bays are noted as productive pike habitat. Lake trout are found in deep pockets reaching 120 feet or more. Arctic grayling are available in the lake's inflowing and outflowing streams and are considered a target for both fly fishing and spin casting. The operation is run as a catch-and-release fishery, with anglers using barbless hooks; northern pike or lake trout under 25 inches may be kept for shore lunch.

Guided fishing is available from the main lodge, with guides accompanying anglers by boat. The outpost camps at Brownstone Lake offer self-guided pike fishing. The diverse lake structure and multi-species availability suit anglers of varied skill levels.

Accommodations

The main lodge houses up to 12 guests in six motel-style units, each with private showers. The lodge includes a dining room, lounge, and daily maid service. Meals are home-cooked and described as hearty; the dining room serves multi-course dinners. Wi-Fi and television are available. Outpost camps sleep up to six guests and are self-catering, with propane supplied for cooking.

Summarized Review Highlights

Munroe Lake Lodge has an outstanding reputation among guests, with reviews consistently awarding it top marks and many visitors returning year after year — some for over a decade and a half. The lodge sits in an extremely remote sub-Arctic location in northern Manitoba, roughly 90 kilometres south of the Nunavut border, and is accessed by small aircraft, typically via Thompson, Manitoba. The high volume of repeat visitors is frequently cited by guests themselves as a reflection of the overall quality of the experience. One reviewer noted that a runway expansion may eventually allow direct flights from Winnipeg, which could make access more convenient in the future.

Guests are consistently enthusiastic about the fishing, which is the primary draw. Trophy northern pike, lake trout, arctic grayling, and walleye are all mentioned, with multiple reviewers reporting catches that qualify for Manitoba Master Angler recognition. The lake is described as well-managed and lightly pressured, resulting in fish that are abundant and willing. Beyond the fishing, reviewers speak highly of the food — described as genuinely impressive, with meals like steaks and hand-rolled sushi cited as highlights of the day — as well as comfortable accommodations with private bedrooms and hot showers. Staff and guides receive consistent praise for being hardworking, friendly, and focused on guest success. The setting itself, including wildlife, northern lights, and the general wilderness atmosphere, adds to the overall experience. The lodge also offers caribou hunting, and at least one hunter who sampled the fishing afterward described it as stunning.

There are very few complaints in these reviews. Guests are candid that weather can be unpredictable, water levels and ice-out timing vary by year, and fishing results can fluctuate day to day — though no reviewer reported leaving without catching fish. These are simply realities of remote wilderness fishing rather than criticisms of the lodge. The logistical effort required to reach the lodge — a drive to Thompson followed by a small-plane flight — is worth noting for those unfamiliar with fly-in travel. Overall, Munroe Lake Lodge appears best suited for serious anglers pursuing trophy pike and lake trout in a remote setting, groups of friends or returning guests who appreciate the camaraderie and full-service camp experience, and anyone drawn to genuinely off-the-grid wilderness travel. It is less likely to appeal to those seeking easy access, predictable daily catches, or a purely DIY experience.

Great fishing in a remote location
I love this place - have been here more than a dozen times over the past 20 years or so. I originally came for the fishing, and that's still the main attraction, but I have fallen in love with everything about this experience. Fishing is always good, although some days are not as good as others. The remote fly-in fishing adventure is fantastic. Weather conditions are unpredictable and change rapidly. Water levels and timing of ice-out vary from year to year, making each trip new and different. I don't catch a Manitoba Master Angler trophy every day, but I've never been here that I didn't pick up at least a few trophy pike and/or lake trout over a few days. Some days I land multiple trophies. Accommodations are comfortable, we're well-fed, and staff are hard-working, accommodating and friendly. I always run into one or more other anglers who I have met on a previous trip - I think the repeat business is a testament to the quality of the experience. For someone looking for a fly-in fishing experience in the remote Manitoba wilderness, I recommend Munroe Lake Lodge.

I usually try to fish right after ice out. This year was perfect timing! I boated 3 trophy pike—41-44 inches and one lake trout—38 1/2 inches in shallow water. Everyone caught trophies. I've been fishing Munroe yearly (except Covid years) since 2007, I love the lake with her fish, it's been expertly managed to keep it a trophy location. I fish elsewhere, but Munroe has been the best for me. Room Tip: The lodge is expanding their runway so flying from Winnipeg will become possible.

Munroe Lake Lodge - Untouched Multi-Species Fishing
Munroe Lake Lodge is located about 90km south of Manitoba's Northern border with Nunavut. Located in the sub-Arctic, it's incredibly remote and incredibly beautiful. This unbelievable opportunity to fish untouched waters is a rare one. We've all fished pressured water before, and this is the polar opposite of whatever pressure is. The fish hadn't seen lures and it showed. Our adventure began in Winnipeg, where myself and 3 other friends drove up to Thompson, Manitoba where we hopped on a small but comfortable wheeled plane up to Munroe Lake. Right from the first day, the pike fishing was incredible. We arrived early June on a perfect warming trend which locked the pike into the crystal clear bays, right where we could see them. The sight fishing was the best I've ever seen. I've never seen that many pike in a week with my own eyes, ever. After a great first day, we headed back to camp for what we learned to be one of the best parts of the week: supper time. The team at Munroe, led by Tyson the Manager, knocked the food out of the park; steaks, hand rolled sushi, you name it. We were absolutely spoiled. After a hot shower, we hit the hay in our two bed bedrooms and got a great rest for the next day. We visited the 'laker hole' and it was one after the other — you drop your line, hit bottom, reel up, and you instantly hook up. There were multiple times when all 3 of us in our boat all had lake trout hooked up. I've never seen anything like it. We also caught stunning arctic grayling on a day trip to the river mouth. Josh landed back-to-back 40''+ pike at sunset, and Jay's fish measured just a hair under 43'' — a Manitoba Master Angler and a perfect way to end the trip. One night, after supper, the lake was still, the air was warm, and the sky was peaceful as we lit a fire at the beach, pulled up the lawn chairs, and shared beverages, stories, and laughs. For me, that's what it's all about.

Munroe Lake Caribou Hunt
Awesome experience with top-notch guides. The caribou camp is accessible only via float plane, which enhances this truly once-in-a-lifetime experience. The outfitter and guides are focused on client success, and they go the extra mile to create opportunities for each hunter.

Trophy hunting and fishing
Came for hunting (was a success). Coming back for the fishing I was able to do a bit of fishing after my hunt was complete and was completely stunned by the fishing product that munroe lake produces from trophy northern pike, Arctic grayling, walleye, and lake trout by the hundreds and topped it off with some northern lights, it was an amazing trip can't wait to be back!!
