Overview

Nestor Falls Fly-In Outposts was founded in 1985 by Dave and Michelle Beaushene, who started the operation with a single outpost on Keeper Lake and one Cessna 185. Over the decades, the business grew to twelve remote wilderness outposts spread across ten lakes in Northwestern Ontario. The outfitter is a fully licensed air carrier and operates its own fleet of float-equipped aircraft, flown by seasoned local pilots.

All twelve outpost camps are accessible only by floatplane, departing from the base in Nestor Falls, Ontario. Guests can be flown up to 200 miles north into Ontario's wilderness, and in each case the outfitter's cabin is the only one on the lake. The operation is self-guided; guests manage their own fishing, cooking, and daily routines at camp. A strict catch-and-release policy is in place — guests may keep a conservation limit of fish under legal size for eating at the lake, but no fish or trophies may be taken home.

Established: 1985

Best for: Anglers and small groups seeking fully self-guided, fly-in outpost fishing with exclusive lake access and no-frills wilderness camping in Northwestern Ontario.
Best time: The season runs from opening weekend in May through the end of September, with July and August noted as suitable for families due to warmer weather and water temperatures.

Highlights

Twelve fly-in outpost camps on ten lakes
Family-owned and operated since 1985
Own licensed floatplane fleet
Five target species: walleye, northern pike, muskie, smallmouth bass, lake trout
Exclusive lake access — one party per lake
Catch-and-release policy enforced
Boats and motors included at each outpost
Fall bear hunt and fishing package available

The Fishing

The twelve outpost lakes hold walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, lake trout, and muskie. Fishing is self-guided, with each party having exclusive use of their lake. Walleye are consistently present across the system, with trophy-sized fish in the 24 to 28-inch range commonly reported by guests. Northern pike reach over 40 inches on several lakes, and the outfitter has recorded trophy pike up to 53 inches released on its waters. Smallmouth bass up to six pounds have been reported from dedicated bass lakes. Lake trout are available at select locations including Kay Lake, Clear Lake, and Malette Lake, with spring fishing in shallower water giving way to deeper presentations through summer.

The outfitter also offers a day-fishing option, where guests are flown to a local lake for the day and picked up in the afternoon. A fall bear hunt and fishing package is available at one of the remote outposts on the outfitter's private hunting area.

Accommodations

Each outpost cabin is the sole structure on its lake and is equipped for self-catering stays. Cabins include a living area with sofas and easy chairs, a kitchen with solar electric lighting, a refrigerator, a freezer, and a propane stove and oven. Bedrooms are furnished with single box spring mattresses. Each cabin has a shower with hot and cold running water, a deck with views of the water, an outdoor gas BBQ grill, and a propane fish cooker. Satellite telephones are installed at each location for communication. Boats provided are 14-foot or 16-foot aluminum craft powered by Yamaha four-stroke outboard motors, equipped with swivel seats, cushions, minnow buckets, and a full supply of fuel. Meals are not included; guests bring and prepare their own food.

Summarized Review Highlights

Nestor Falls Fly-In Outposts has an overwhelmingly positive reputation among guests, with nearly every reviewer awarding a perfect five-star rating. What stands out most is the depth of loyalty the operation has earned: a large number of reviewers have been returning annually for 10, 20, or even 30-plus years, and several describe it as the best fly-in outfitter they have ever used after trying multiple competitors across Canada. Owners Dave and Michelle, along with their son Jon and the broader staff, are mentioned by name in review after review as warm, attentive, and genuinely invested in each group's experience. Specific examples of service cited include flying in replacement fuses the same day a cabin lost power, arranging a same-day alcohol delivery by satellite phone request, and arranging an early extraction when a guest had a family emergency at home — all without being asked or without complaint.

Guests consistently praise the quality and variety of fishing across the outpost lakes, with walleye and northern pike being the primary targets. Fish counts in the hundreds over a few days are commonly reported, along with trophy-sized specimens including pike over 40 inches and walleye approaching 27 inches. The catch-and-release policy implemented by the owners is credited by long-time guests for the steady improvement in fish size and population over the decades. Cabins are described as clean, well-maintained, and regularly upgraded, with modern amenities including solar power, hot water, freezers, and the ability to charge electronics. Boats and motors receive consistent praise for being reliable and well-kept. The remote, wilderness setting — private lakes, dark skies, loons, wildlife, and no internet — is a major draw that guests return to specifically for the chance to disconnect. Several reviewers note that guests are responsible for bringing their own food and drink, which is standard for self-catering outpost camps and not a complaint, just something first-timers should be aware of.

Genuine complaints are rare to nonexistent in this review set. The only mild note of disappointment came from one group that experienced poor weather — rain and high winds — during a late-August trip, though the reviewer acknowledged that late-season weather variability is simply a known risk. One cabin at Malaher Lake was described as "a bit aged" though "upgraded well," and one group noted a water pump issue that was resolved quickly by the staff. One reviewer also mentioned losing large pike at the boat due to undersized nets, which is a practical tip for future guests rather than a criticism of the outfitter. This destination is best suited for groups of fishing friends or families who want a true remote fly-in experience with private lake access, strong walleye and northern pike fishing, and a self-sufficient outpost setup. It appeals equally to seasoned Canadian fishing veterans and first-timers, and several reviewers specifically highlight it as a great choice for introducing children or spouses to fly-in fishing.

Northwoods Olympics Competition - 7th Trip to Cairns
Hi guys: Highlights of the 2023 trip: This was our 7th trip to Cairns and first since 2019 (way too long of a break). This was the first year that we were able to crack the 1000 threshold for fish caught, coming in at 1031 fish. The fish seemed hungry this year, especially the Northerns, we ended up catching 44 Northerns over 30" with 2 over 40 (42" was the largest). The largest walleye was 27". The perch were even aggressive, we caught 18 this year, all on spoons and spinners. We had some awesome fish fry's, fish tacos and added a couple of new menu items this year that were awesome - Walleye Chowder and Walleye Cakes (like crab cakes). We held our annual Northwoods Olympics competition with Mark winning the Gold, Kevin W winning the Silver and newbee Tim taking the Bronze. Most of our old fishing spots were hot but we also found a few new ones. Can't wait until next year!

First time using the Nester Falls Fly In Outposts. The experience with them was outstanding. They are very well run. We were the first ones in to there furthest outpost camp this season - Malaher It was clean and ready to go. The boats and motors were awesome. The fishing was great. The opportunities to explore and fish many other lakes was really fun. The solar power is a big plus. Hot water, Freezer, charging depth finders, etc. Highly recommend these people. We will be back

Highly recommend; this is what outpost fishing is all about
Highly recommend. Service was outstanding. Dave and Michelle are kind and attentive. Their pilots do it all and do it well with a great attitude. We have been to 6 fly in outpost groups and Nestor is the best we have experienced. Went to Malaher Lake. Cabin is a bit aged but upgraded well. Caught 275 walleyes and 40 northerns over 4 days. Two 40 inch northerns and a 27 inch walleye. That is what is so interesting about this lake is the variety and the beauty. We most enjoyed taking the short portage to Lake Moar. Stunningly beautiful boat ride and lots of fish. No problem with the requirement to use artificial baits for walleyes. I may never go back to live bait.

Fish Tales from the Hren Party - First Time at Malaher
Hello Nestor Falls Team, This is on behalf of the Hren fishing party that went to Malaher Lake opening weekend of the 2023 fishing season. This was our first time using Nestor Falls Fly-In Outposts. Our fish count: 280 walleyes and 40+ northerns. Two 40 inch northerns, several more 35 inch+ released. We really enjoyed the accommodations. The motors on the boats were flawless. The water pump was working and not working. You guys were amazing in responding, flying in new parts the next day. Most enjoyable: the stunning water beauty, the variety of fish and sizes, but oh the stories. This is the fifth camp we have used and we enjoyed yours the best. Happy to serve as a reference for you all.

Best fishing ever
Quality in everything they do. I have been going with Dave and Michelle for 20 years and start getting excited for the next trip on the way home from the last trip. The fishing at Malaher is second to none. Big Walleye and huge Northern Pike are an every day experience. There's a lot of wildlife to see too. The cabin feels like home and has everything you could need for a great stay in the wilderness. You're the only cabin on the lake and if that's not enough you can leave Malaher through a narrow channel and go into the river system and fish even more unspoiled water. If you want to rough it in a spoiled kind of way, Nestor Falls Fly In is the outfit for you.

Simply the Best!
We have been a repeat visitor to NFFO for 10+ years; fishing in Canada for 20+ years. Cabins, boats, fishing are all top notch. What stands out are Dave's, Michelle's, and Jon's attention to detail; the staff will go the extra mile to ensure a fantastic experience. A great example: Last year we blew several fuses (which was our fault) resulting in intermittent loss of power in the cabin. When informed, NFFO flew in extra fuses to correct the issue, without even being asked to do so! We have been spoiled by their commitment to customer satisfaction and eagerly look forward to our "escape to the wilderness" every year. M. Wesley, Barrington IL

Really, you're thinking about some other place to save a couple of dollars?????
Our group has made an annual trip with Nestor Falls since ?1993? Anyway, In that time, those of us that still have hair have noticed it's a bit whiter! Honestly, it is not possible to recommend Dave, Michelle and Jon more! Every year they upgrade the cabins in ways we couldn't imagine 30 years ago. I'll not tell you about our group's favorite because we're old and selfish and disinclined to share such information. But be advised that whichever lake you choose, you will not be anything less than impressed with the accommodations! With regards to the fishing, which is the whole point of the trip, I'd recommend live bait. That is unless you are a Bass Master and can seduce with a jig and twister. I'm not that good. If a Canada fishing trip is on your bucket list, THIS IS THE PLACE!

5 star fishing and 5 star accomodations!!!
We had a great time on our trip up in your neck of the woods a few weeks ago. I enjoyed seeing you all again as we shared stories and small talk in the office over homemade deer sausage and cheese! We explored some new areas of Lount Lake that we had not visited before and found some new areas to fish on our next trip up to see you, Dave, and the rest of your fantastic crew. Having our previous trips being in late May to mid-June we got accustomed to the typical springtime fishing pattern where to fish are aggressive and found in typical springtime locations and structure. Having our trip in early August this year we found that we had to alter our approach somewhat. We found that the smallmouth and walleye were a little deeper in 10'-15' feet of water. Our best results for them came from fishing main lake points, secondary points and islands. We still had luck with our springtime lures (X-Raps, topwater, Pop-R's, Zara Spooks, etc.) fishing out from the smaller boulder lined banks, but quickly realized we needed to get deeper to get to the fish we were seeing on the fish finder in that 10'-15' foot of water. Deeper diving square bill crankbaits in various color patterns provided results on these fish. We also found that wacky rigging a 4"-5" Gulp worm on a jighead for those suspended fish worked well. Many walleye and smallmouth found this combination irresistible. Overall we found that we were running into larger northerns this year. We found that the bigger brutes were in medium to large bays and about 15'-20' out from the weed/grass line in about 10' feet of water. We boated and released a handful of 33"-38" fish and unfortunately lost a couple of 40"+ ones at the boat because we did not have nets adequate to handle that size of fish.

Loved it!
My group of 8 went with NFO in late August. We stayed on Malette Lake. Great facilities with great comfort for our group. All you need, just bring your fishing gear and food. We do wish the weather was more cooperative. Rained and very windy during our stay. That is the chance you take going in late August.

Our pilot, Kyle was awesome. Great personality and very helpful. This was also my first flight on a float plane. The scenery at this place is unbelievable! Not enough words to describe it! Calm, serene, peaceful and totally stress free! Truly God's country! Highly recommended! Everyone should experience this place at least once! Miles and miles of tranquility! Fantastic Fishing and Service
I'm going on my 11th or 12th trip this August 2019. Cairns Lake has turned out to be the favorite, although I've had memorable trips to many of their other lakes and cabins. This is first class service, first class cabins, and first class fishing. Dave and Michelle are fabulous, and do everything in their power to make your trip memorable. I highly recommend Nestor Falls Fly-In to anyone thinking about a fishing trip to Canada. Just think, a 3-5000 acre lake you can call your own for the length of your trip. Lots and lots of large fish to catch.

28 Years Of Memories
Flew with Dave and Michelle sight seeing in 1990 and have been fishing with them every year since. We have been to all but one of their outposts and they all have their special qualities. A trip in June and another in August are the highlight of our Summer with great fishing and rugged, pristine beauty. Great outposts and excellent planes. Wine on the deck, sunrises, sunsets, meteor showers, tracking the International Space Station across "dark" Canadian skies, northern lights and birding. For people who want to unhook from the world and reconnect on the personal level this is a place to do that. I believe that Dave and Michelle consider all of us as friends and treat us accordingly.

Exceptional
My first trip with Dave and Michelle was mid-1980s, and I've only missed one or two years, but made up for that with several double-trip years. I travel from Texas and highly recommend them for consistently safe and quality services. They are very friendly and honest folks. I've taken my wife, friends, sons, coworkers, pastor, etc. over the years. Every person loved their experience! It is a rare to find such a remote and pristine experience and escaping email is refreshing. Mostly, it is reassuring to know that your hosts have your back. The equipment is well maintained; including the all important float planes. Dave is very serious about that. I also still very much appreciate that they made a special trip at their expense to get me out ahead of schedule when my father fell seriously ill back home, and Michelle followed up with a note of concern. They are just the best. I plan to keep going as long as I can!

They Are The Best
We've been flying with Dave and Michelle since 1990 when they bought out the outfitter we had previously flown with. We've been to many of their outpost lakes and their foresight to implement a catch and release policy on those lakes has been instrumental in guaranteeing consistently great fishing as well as the steady increase in fish size. They run a first class operation paying attention to every detail with great pilots, consistently smooth operating equipment and a well maintained fleet of aircraft. But what sets them apart is their ability to make us feel like we are always staying with old friends. You know the kind - every time you see them, it's like things pick up where they last left off. Thanks Dave and Michelle and Nestor Falls Fly-In Outposts for many, many years of great trips and hopefully many more.

The experience you are looking for!
Dave and Michelle have this down!! They couldn't be more friendly, caring, helpful and accommodating. Their lakes have it all. Great fishing, beautiful scenery and plentiful diversity. Went to Malaher for the 3rd time this year. My personal fav due to the numerous 21"-23" walleye that can be caught all day in the right spots. We always find our own new spots. I also love the diversity of structure. From narrows to big lake action. Islands and points abound. Rock piles, flats, rapids, drop offs. No matter the weather, you can find optional fishing to match it! Herod is great and so is Larus. Larus has a sweet cabin! Haven't got past these lakes yet. No need to!! :D

Always the best!
I have been using Nestor Falls Fly-In Outposts since the late 1990s. During all the years, Dave, Michelle and the crew have always been the best. Offering what they can (great fishing on your own lake) is always enhanced by attentive, friendly service. As an example, we forgot to bring the mix for our alcohol this year. We called Dave by satellite phone and he was able to shuffle things around and we got a delivery the next day. This is just one example (maybe somewhat extreme) of the excellent service that we have always received. I look forward to many more "get away" trips with Nestor Falls.

Wonderful Outfitter
This year's trip was our 6th with Nestor Falls. As a previous 25 year veteran of Canadian fishing trips to 5 star lodges and outpost camps in Quebec, Manitoba and Saskatchewan I wanted to find a more "hands on" experience that was closer to home and offered my sons the opportunity to learn how to handle boats, fish and camp duties themselves. After some research we discovered Nestor Falls Outfitters and have loved every trip with them! Their cabins and boats are first rate and the fishing is everything you could ask for. Dave and Michelle and their staff are extremely friendly and will work with you to find the right lake for the type of fishing you like to do. We are northern pike fishermen and have been blown away by the numbers and quality of northern pike we catch each year. This year's trip was very special as our party of 8 boated 87 pike over 30 inches with 6 topping 40 inches! There is just nothing like watching a gorgeous sunset to the sound of loons as you sit on your cabin deck sharing fish stories. Great fishing, beautiful scenery and top notch cabins - you just can't ask for more!

Quality operation, first class all the way!
I was lucky enough to first fly-in to Onepine Lake outpost back in the early 1980's. Glen McLeod was the owner of the outposts at Onepine, Larus, Lount, and, I believe, Cairns Lakes. Glen was old-school when it came to outpost accommodations! The bare minimum! We caught fish and had a roof over our heads at night but nothing like the trips with Nestor Falls Fly-in Outposts today! Since Dave and Michelle took over in 1989, these, and the other outposts that they have added to their accommodation list, have certainly become the standard all other outfitters strive to imitate in northwest Ontario fishing outposts! Their cabins, aircraft, professionalism, and attention to every detail are unmatched in making your fishing trip successful. And that's without mentioning the fishing! Which, since Dave introduced "Catch and Release" at his outposts, has become one of your best opportunites to catch the "fish of a lifetime"! As I stated, I have been lucky to have been able to make many, many fishing trips to Nestor Falls Fly-in Outposts over the last 33 years, and I have seen, firsthand, the transformation in quality and quantity of the fishery in the stewardship of Dave and Michelle Beaushene. I highly recommend you consider Nestor Falls Fly-in Outposts for a "fly-in fishing trip to remember"!!

21 Consecutive Seasons
Nestor Falls Fly-In Outposts, what more could you ask for. I started coming to Canada in 1983 to find the perfect fishing adventure. For the first nine years many different camps were tried, but none met my greedy expectations, as they all seemed to lack something. In 1992 I took my first fly-in adventure to a remote lake called Onepine where we had the entire lake to ourselves and ran out of bait by the second day. It became routine to catch over 100 fish per day for each angler. I have just completed my 21st consecutive season with Nestor Falls Fly-In Outposts and hopefully have several more trips in my future. Dave and Michelle have put me on six different lakes so far and I look forward to trying to fish them all. Their 'WHATEVER IT TAKES' attitude is reflective throughout their staff from the pilots and dock workers to the girls in the office and the ones cleaning the cabins. This is a first class operation that continues to provide a safe and fulfilling fishing adventure for all ages. Why not give them a try, you won't be disappointed.

Getting There

Guests drive to the outfitter's base in Nestor Falls, Ontario, located approximately one hour north of the US-Canada border crossing at International Falls, Minnesota. The base is situated off Highway 71 on Nestor Falls Fly-In Road. From there, floatplanes operated by the outfitter's own licensed pilots transport guests to the outpost camps, with flights reaching up to 200 miles north into the Ontario wilderness. All outpost camps are accessible only by air. The outfitter recommends arriving in Nestor Falls the night before departure; two base cabins overlooking Lake of the Woods are available for pre-trip stays, and the town has grocery, liquor, and bait and tackle shops nearby.
