Overview

Wogenstahl's North of 50 Outposts Inc. operates five fly-in outpost camps in the remote wilderness north of Pickle Lake, Ontario. Each of the five camps sits on a separate lake, and only one cabin is placed on each lake, meaning guests have the entire water body to themselves for the duration of their stay. The operation is based out of Pickle Lake, which is the most northerly community in Ontario accessible by road, placing the outpost camps in one of the province's most remote fishing regions.

In addition to fishing, the outfitter offers self-guided moose hunting packages for both residents and non-residents in Wildlife Management Unit 16A. The business operates under the Wogenstahl family name and can be reached by phone at (807) 216-7779.

Best for: Self-guided anglers and small groups seeking a private, one-party-per-lake outpost experience in far northwestern Ontario.
Best time: The operation runs a fishing and hunting season; walleye and northern pike are the main draws, with moose hunting available in the fall.

The Fishing

The primary target species at North of 50 Outposts are walleye and northern pike. Because each lake holds only one cabin party at a time, fishing pressure on these waters is extremely low. One of the featured camps, Bow Lake, is a nine-mile lake situated on the Otoskwin River system with three large rapids to fish below. From Bow Lake, anglers can portage around the largest rapids and travel five or six miles upstream on the Otoskwin River into Froats Lake, where additional walleye fishing is available at a further set of rapids. Wildlife commonly seen along this route includes moose, caribou, bear, eagles, beavers, otters, and wolves.

Accommodations

All five outpost cabins are housekeeping style, meaning guests cook and clean for themselves. The cabins are equipped with hot and cold running water, showers, propane or solar lighting, propane fridges and stoves, barbecues, and fish cookers. Each cabin comes with 14-foot Lund boats powered by 9.9 hp Mercury or Yamaha motors. The Bow Lake cabin specifically has two large bedrooms sleeping up to eight, a screened deck, a screened fish-cleaning station, and an interior shower. On-site bait is also available.
