Overview

Gray Wood Outfitters is a family-owned operation run by two couples, Andrew and Monika Gray and Adam and Caroline Wood, staging fly-in fishing and hunting trips out of Nakina, Ontario. The outfitter operates four camps situated on Beteau, Windsor, Richter, and Blackbirch Lakes, all but Blackbirch are within the Attawapiskat River system in the far north of Ontario. Beteau Lake serves as the main camp with support staff on site, albeit not a fancy lodge, with the remaining three functioning as self-guided outpost camps.

The operation combines the owners' backgrounds in hunting, fishing, and hospitality. Flights to all camps are provided by Nakina Air Service using aircraft such as the de Havilland DHC-3T Turbo Otter. The camps range from roughly 130 to 180 miles north of Nakina, placing them far beyond the Albany River and into First Nations land; these are among the most remote outpost camps in the province.

Best for: Anglers and groups seeking self-guided, fly-in fishing in highly remote northern Ontario waters with minimal fishing pressure, including families, small groups, and trophy-focused anglers.
Best time: Camps operate through the open-water season from late May through fall, with Walleye and Northern Pike active spring through fall and peak fishing generally reported from late May through August.

Highlights

Four fly-in camps on Beteau, Windsor, Richter, and Blackbirch Lakes
Northern Pike and Walleye are the primary target species
Camps are located 130 to 180 miles north of Nakina
Flights serviced by Nakina Air Service are included in trip cost
Boats, motors, and gas are included at all camps
Housekeeping outpost camps and staffed main lodge available
Attawapiskat River system with minimal angling pressure

The Fishing

The primary target species at all four camps are Northern Pike and Walleye. Beteau Lake, a widening of the Attawapiskat River's south channel, is known for both high-volume and trophy Walleye catches and trophy Northern Pike that regularly exceed 40 inches, with fish over 50 inches having been landed. Windsor Lake spans approximately 20 miles across three connected bodies of water and offers strong Walleye numbers along with trophy Pike. Richter Lake is noted for high-volume Walleye fishing, with daily catches of 50 to over 100 fish reported by guests. Blackbirch Lake, the most remote camp at 180 miles north of Nakina, provides access to additional Pike and Walleye fishing with very low angling pressure. Sturgeon, Whitefish, and Perch are also present in some waters. The lakes and river system feature Canadian Shield structure including rocky points, weed beds, sandy bottoms, and current breaks.

Fishing at the outpost camps is self-guided. At the Beteau Lake main lodge, on-site staff are available and knowledgeable about local fishing. Boats and motors are included with all packages, with one boat provided per two guests. The waters see minimal fishing pressure given their remoteness, and guests have reported consistent action throughout the open-water season.

Accommodations

Accommodations vary by camp. The Beteau Lake main lodge has multiple sleeping cabins accommodating groups of up to 12 guests, along with a shared mini-lodge featuring a full kitchen, refrigerator, stove, cookware, and eating utensils. Amenities at Beteau include generator power, hot and cold running water, shower facilities, a freezer, Wi-Fi, internet TV, and a fish cleaning station, with on-site staff present. The Windsor Lake camp has a renovated 36 x 24-foot two-bedroom cabin sleeping up to 8 guests. The Richter Lake cabin is a renovated 32 x 16-foot structure sleeping up to 8, equipped with a shower, hot and cold water, a fish cleaning station, propane heat, and a gas range. The Blackbirch Lake outpost cabin is 36 x 24 feet and accommodates 4 to 8 guests. All outpost camps are fully equipped for housekeeping with boats and motors included. A meal plan option is available at the Beteau Lake main lodge; outpost camps operate on a housekeeping basis.

Summarized Review Highlights

Guests rate Gray Wood Outfitters very highly. Nearly every review gives 5 stars, and a few give 4. Many reviewers are repeat customers. Some are on their second, third, or fifth trip, and some have re-booked at other camps. Several call it the best outfitter or fly-in trip they have used. Reviews cover the Blackbirch Lake, Beteau Lake (Attawapiskat River), and Windsor Lake camps. Owner Adam Wood and the team are described as responsive, communicative, and honest, and some say Adam texted during the trip to check in.

The fishing is the most consistent praise. Guests report large numbers of walleye, with some reporting daily limits, "hundreds" over a week, or days of 100+ fish. They also report plenty of northern pike, and many mention several pike over 40 inches. One group reported 20+ pike over 40 inches across multiple trips. Reviewers say much of the fishing is close to camp, and some caught walleye from the dock. Camps are described as clean, well maintained, and well equipped. Reviewers mention a full kitchen, fridge and freezer, generator power, hot showers and running water, and Wi-Fi or Starlink. Fish cleaning stations and reliable boats and motors also come up, including 14-foot Lunds with 15 HP Mercury motors. Camp caretakers and hosts (Steve, Wayne, Ivars, and Ben) are praised for helpful fishing tips, keeping boats fueled, fixing problems quickly, and in one case organizing a shore lunch. Nakina Air Service, the flight provider, is repeatedly called excellent, including one report of flying in through bad weather. Guests also mention seeing moose, bear, and scenery. One guest got a moose during a combined hunting and fishing trip. Another says the price is reasonable and a good value.

Complaints are minor. The main one is hot weather. In heat waves with warm water, the bigger pike fishing slowed, and one 4-star review called the fishing "generally slow," though each boat still hooked a large pike. Another group saw fewer 40-inch pike than in earlier years but still caught three, along with plenty of walleye. The portage lake near Blackbirch and Beteau holds pike only, with no walleye, and one report says it turned off for days at a time. One reviewer described the accommodations as "rustic but sufficient," and another had a shower pump fail, which the caretaker replaced. Gray Wood suits anglers who want high-volume walleye and big-pike fishing, groups of friends, and father-son or family trips. It also suits experienced fly-in guests and first-timers who want a well-equipped, comfortable outpost with good communication. Hunters can also use it for moose. It is a better fit for those who want catch numbers and comfort than for those who need a luxury lodge.

Blackbirch Beatdown! – Remote Canadian Fishing With Graywood Outfitters In Nakina, ON
Trip report from a week at the Blackbirch Lake outpost in a summer heat wave. The camp has Starlink wifi and the dock alone produced walleye (two guys landed 66 from chairs on the dock in one windy day). One day's final tally was 167 walleyes, plus plenty of pike including a 40-inch fish caught on a jig. Despite the heat it was 'one of my all time favourites'. He called Graywood 'a first class operation' and said he'll fish with them again.

Trip Report: Blackbirch Lake with GrayWood Outfitters
Graywood was easy to deal with, good communication, nice people. Nakina Air was great, as always, and got the group in through nasty weather when other planes never got in the air. The outpost was excellent, well stocked, wired for electric with a generator, nice boats, wifi, hot shower, running water. Fishing was top notch; they had tough weather with a cold front on arrival that gave way to scorching heat. They caught plenty of big fat healthy pike and tons of chunky walleye, with an average size bigger than he normally sees even on fly-ins. The portage lake held only pike, lots of big ones, though it turned off for days at a time. He later said he re-booked, this time for Windsor Lake with three of his kids.

Blackbirch Lake - Gray Wood Outfitters August 2024
Trip report from a group of six on a seven-day trip to Blackbirch Lake. Blackbirch is 150 miles above Nakina and connected to Mistassin Lake via a short rocky channel. The fishing was great in all three lakes, as was the scenery. We had the entire place to ourselves. The cabin was extremely comfortable and well stocked. The boats were great, although a few leak, and the 15HP motors were a very nice upgrade from the 9.9s most outfitters use. We were thrilled to have running hot and cold water, a hot shower, fast StarLink wifi, and a generator that ran everything. It was A++ top notch all the way around. Weather was cold and rainy at first and then crazy hot and calm, but we still caught tons of pike and walleye; sometimes you could catch 50 in an hour, other times you couldn't buy a bite. Caught 101 and 107 walleye on two consecutive mornings.

A Canadian Fishing Adventure: Gray Wood Outfitters
We had an awesome time visiting Gray Wood Outfitter's Beteau Lake outpost camp! This location in Ontario's Superior Country is known for its big northern pike. Beteau Lake is part of the Attawapiskat River system, celebrated for its remoteness and minimal fishing pressure. The area's conservation efforts and catch-and-release policies contribute to thriving fish populations. The possibility of catching up to 100 walleyes in a day can be done. We had numerous double and TRIPLE hook-ups on walleyes. This river system is fairly easy to navigate with plenty of good fishing just minutes away from the camp. You can catch fish right off the dock too! The cabins there are comfortable and spacious. Beteau Lake Outpost can accommodate 1-10 people with four sleeping cabins. There is also a mini-lodge with a full kitchen, refrigerator, stove, cookware, and eating utensils. You'll also have access to a hot shower and WiFi. The on-site staff are very helpful too. And they know how to find and catch fish! The boats provided are perfect for navigating this river system with plenty of space to store your gear and land a big fish! If you're looking for an amazing far-away destination with incredible walleye and pike fishing, check out Gray Wood Outfitters.

Fishing Beteau Lake & the magical Attawapiskat River
Trip report from a week at Gray Wood Outfitters' Beteau Lake Outpost with the 'Walleye Wanderers' (about a 130-mile, 55-minute flight). The camp has four spacious, comfortable cabins plus a well-equipped common kitchen building, hot and cold running water, WiFi and satellite TV, a shower house, fish cleaning station and a stable dock. The grounds are clean and maintained. Beteau is truly a fish factory where the Walleye are very plentiful. Several healthy pike over 40 inches were caught and released during the week, and the camp has been updated and renovated since Gray Wood took over. 'The fishing is fantastic, and the place is simply magical.'

Overall, this was BY FAR, the best fishing trip that I & my 4 fishing partners have ever had!
Air travel, provided by Nakina Air Service was great for our trip, which ran from 27 AUG – 4 SEP 2021. The camp itself is accurately depicted on the web site and cabins were clean, appeared well maintained & laid out to easily accommodate at least 8, although there were only 4 in our party. All the appliances, including full size frig, stove/oven, freezer & propane heaters in the kitchen & cabins worked well, along with the satellite TV. Wifi also worked. Elec power was provided by Honda generator & worked flawlessly. Shower caused a problem toward the end of the trip but a new pump was installed by Wayne (Camp Caretaker) & issue was resolved. Although he just arrived at Beteau, Wayne was, in a word, incredible! He is a jack of all trades & master of many! A real keeper!! Boats were 14 foot Lunds or equivalent with new 15 HP Mercury motors and were excellent. We caught 8 x 40"+; 5-6 x 37"+; a bunch in the 34"+ range as well as many over 30". Within 2 hours the first afternoon, I caught two 40"+. I've been on 15+ trips to Canada without a 40"+ & I got 4 myself! Both the Northerns & the Walleyes were exceptionally healthy-looking fish, especially heavy for their length & put up fantastic fights. All the Northerns were released in accordance with Camp policy. Adam Wood of Gray Wood Outfitters, texted several times to ensure that all was going well & see if we needed anything.

Trip ran 27 Aug - 4 Sep 2021. Air travel by Nakina Air Service was great. Cabins were clean, well maintained and laid out to easily accommodate at least 8. Appliances, generator, WiFi and satellite TV all worked well. When the shower pump failed, camp caretaker Wayne installed a new one and was 'incredible'. Boats were 14 foot Lunds with new 15 HP Mercury motors and were excellent. Fishing was AWESOME even with very low water: 450+ Northerns and 250 Walleyes, including 8 pike 40"+ and a biggest walleye of 24.5". Most fish were caught within about 5 minutes of camp. Adam Wood texted several times to make sure all was going well. 'BY FAR, the best fishing trip' the group had ever had.

Graywood Outfitters (page 2 reply; trip about 3 years earlier, apparently before the 2020 ownership change)
Went to Beteau Lake approximately 3 years ago in mid-June'ish and was by far the worst fly in fishing trip in my 30 years going North. Different ownership certainly won't hurt. The mosquitoes and horrible cabins made it almost uninhabitable!!!! Boats and motors were junk. Fishing for Pike was not good at all and we fished hard for them……weather and water levels were not ideal but expected so much more than it produced! Caught a couple 28+" Walleye but overall the Walleye fishing was not consistent or good during our stay.

Windsor Lake On The Attawapiskat River
I recently visited Windsor Lake on the north channel of the Attawapiskat River and had a trip for the ages. In all my years I've never had a more perfect weather week that early in the season and with zero bugs. Good numbers of large pike and all the walleye you wanted - most of them caught incidentally on oversized pike spoons. The camp is operated by Graywood Outfitters, recent new owners, and they did a great job renovating and improving the old camp. I was at Windsor many years ago and back then the camp was rough to say the least. Beyond the great weather and fishing we DID have a pretty large black bear wander into camp one night providing a little extra excitement.

Cabin was great with everything you need for a comfortable week. Flights in and out went well and all staff very accommodating. Boat had slow leak but four stroke motors work great. Only complaint was the weather and not much you can do about that. Good job Grey Wood Outfitters!

Four of us just finished a trip to Gray Wood Outfitters Blackbirch Lake camp. We had a great time! We caught hundreds of walleyes and some very nice pike. Gray Wood is a top notch outfitter. The boats and motors work great - no leaky gas tanks. The camp has everything that's needed. The setting so far north in the boreal forest is beautiful. We saw a black bear and a bull moose. Above all, Adam and the others are professional, great communicators, and friendly. I highly recommend.

Here I am waiting for the airplane to pick us up after a great week at Beteau. We didn't get the numbers of 40+ northerns we had in past years, but we did get three. Probably 10, 39 inch and I can't count how many over 30. Every day we caught our limit of walleye and head walleye for supper several different ways. Our host Steve was very helpful and he's just a great guy. I'll be back!

This is a truly majestic place, you get the scenery of the Canadian wilderness, the thrill of captaining your own boat up through a fast moving river and the back bays that yield bigger stronger fish than any lake can replicate. We didn't need a depth finder or any fancy electronics, we just had our map of the river and found our childlike love of fishing again as we drove up the river and picked out spots that looked good for fishing. Truth be told the fish are probably everywhere with the Mighty Attiwapiskat river working as a true Monster fish factory by supplying endless white fish, sucker, and baitfish for the Pike and walleye to eat. We have been back multiple times and we have caught 20+ 40+ inch pike and 25+ in walleye. You can troll, jig, or cast lures. If the fishing was all they had i would continue to go back but they also have a great staff that stays in touch, a great camp host at Beteau and Nakina Airport is a top notch partner to work with for flights out. We saw Moose, bear, countless birds, we experienced a quietness only a remote camp can provide and built memories only a good group of guys can create. It's a lifetime bucket list type adventure, book it- you won't be disappointed.

Had an excellent experience at Windsor lake last week! Our group of four caught a ton fish and ended up with a few Pike over 40. Accommodations were excellent and comfortable. But the weather was not in our favor unless we were in Florida! It got warmer each day with temps up to 90F. Water temps spiked at 73F and made fishing for the larger pike tougher each day. Overall we caught as many walleyes as we wanted to and the hammer handles kept us busy most days. Can't wait to get back up here again someday soon! Thanks for a great experience.

One of the best equipped outpost camps I've visited. Gray Wood Outfitters and Nakina Air took care of everything needed. Having the inside fishing cleaning station at camp was great to keep out of the bugs. The shed full of tools/supplies was great for cleaning and any minor repairs. Even had a shop vac for cleaning up the cabin. We saw a lot of moose and even bear. The surprise was the sturgeon that were jumping all around the lake. Even though the fishing was generally slow due to hot weather, there was plenty of nature and the smaller aggressive pike cooperated. Every boat still managed to hook up with one large pike during the week.

Gray Wood outfitters are top notch outfitters. We had a group of 6 and spent a week at Windsor lake. Amazing how much water there is to explore. My wife and I walked to the lake behind the camp and felt like we were in a place not many have been. If you take the adventure walk, have a telescopic rod in a backpack as it is thick. The camp was great and will never forget Windsor Lake! Thanks Gray Wood.

Gray Wood outfitters has delivered on one awesome adventure package ! This fly in trip was amazing. Beteau Lake offered scenic views and unparalleled fishing. So much that its soured fishing back home for us. We cannot wait to come back! The camp was very well run and had all the amenities needed. Our guide Steve was amazing, knowledgeable and just an all around rock solid fella. From the arrival at Nakina Air (Best bush plane pilots and Tracy is amazing) right through to getting back in the truck somber and missing the camp and people we met as strangers and left as friends. I cannot recommend Gray Wood enough.

One word.WOW!!!!! Beautiful scenery, the camp was exactly what we expected and the guide was absolutely phenomenal! Steve took time out of his days to make sure that we all knew the lake, knew where all the good fishing spots were, what to use for bait and how to fish them. Definitely going to be going back next year, and I'm going to spread the word to every family member and friend I can think of.

Gray Wood has fantastic walleye and pike fishing. Accommodations are rustic but sufficient. Steve, the camp caretaker, was attentive to our every need. He organized a shore lunch which was lots of fun. August 2026 was our second trip to this camp and hopefully will return in the future.

Another awesome trip to Beteau Lake, tons of big fish, both Walleye & Pike. For those of you considering a fishing trip, this is not your average fly-in lake. Beteau lake is a widening of the Attiwapiskat River and is world renowned for monster sized Pike and big thick Walleye. Highly recommended

Just finished a perfect week at Blackbirch Lake. Got our moose down on the second morning and then spent the rest of the time catching plenty of pike and walleye. Everything was perfect and felt like we were still at home. Starlink internet, running water and hot showers, fridge and freezer, stove, gas bbq, perfect sized boats and engines, generators and back up everything you could think of. Fish cleaning house was the perfect touch too. We will definitely be back!

Gray Woods Outfitters, Blackbirch Lake July 2025
Gray Woods Outfitters, Blackbirch Lake July 2025. The trip was excellent from the flights (Nakina Air is the best) to the accommodations to the fishing. This was my 3rd trip to Blackbirch with my son and as always, we had another exceptional experience. More quality Walleye than we cared to count and numerous Northern Pike, with each of the 3 trips having produced multiple Pike in the 40 inch plus class. Blackbirch is a great productive lake but Mistassin Lake, which is to the South and through a shallow rocky, yet navigable channel adds unlimited opportunities. Mistassin offers rocky shoals and moving water for Walleye and numerous weed beds for Pike, it is a great fishery! The portage lake to the East offers additional opportunities for Pike and exploration but does not support Walleye populations. All in all these three Lakes offer endless opportunities for exploration, great fishing and adventure.
