Summarized Review Highlights

Guests rate Gray Wood Outfitters very highly. Nearly every review gives 5 stars, and a few give 4. Many reviewers are repeat customers. Some are on their second, third, or fifth trip, and some have re-booked at other camps. Several call it the best outfitter or fly-in trip they have used. Reviews cover the Blackbirch Lake, Beteau Lake (Attawapiskat River), and Windsor Lake camps. Owner Adam Wood and the team are described as responsive, communicative, and honest, and some say Adam texted during the trip to check in.

The fishing is the most consistent praise. Guests report large numbers of walleye, with some reporting daily limits, "hundreds" over a week, or days of 100+ fish. They also report plenty of northern pike, and many mention several pike over 40 inches. One group reported 20+ pike over 40 inches across multiple trips. Reviewers say much of the fishing is close to camp, and some caught walleye from the dock. Camps are described as clean, well maintained, and well equipped. Reviewers mention a full kitchen, fridge and freezer, generator power, hot showers and running water, and Wi-Fi or Starlink. Fish cleaning stations and reliable boats and motors also come up, including 14-foot Lunds with 15 HP Mercury motors. Camp caretakers and hosts (Steve, Wayne, Ivars, and Ben) are praised for helpful fishing tips, keeping boats fueled, fixing problems quickly, and in one case organizing a shore lunch. Nakina Air Service, the flight provider, is repeatedly called excellent, including one report of flying in through bad weather. Guests also mention seeing moose, bear, and scenery. One guest got a moose during a combined hunting and fishing trip. Another says the price is reasonable and a good value.

Complaints are minor. The main one is hot weather. In heat waves with warm water, the bigger pike fishing slowed, and one 4-star review called the fishing "generally slow," though each boat still hooked a large pike. Another group saw fewer 40-inch pike than in earlier years but still caught three, along with plenty of walleye. The portage lake near Blackbirch and Beteau holds pike only, with no walleye, and one report says it turned off for days at a time. One reviewer described the accommodations as "rustic but sufficient," and another had a shower pump fail, which the caretaker replaced. Gray Wood suits anglers who want high-volume walleye and big-pike fishing, groups of friends, and father-son or family trips. It also suits experienced fly-in guests and first-timers who want a well-equipped, comfortable outpost with good communication. Hunters can also use it for moose. It is a better fit for those who want catch numbers and comfort than for those who need a luxury lodge.

Blackbirch Beatdown! – Remote Canadian Fishing With Graywood Outfitters In Nakina, ON
Trip report from a week at the Blackbirch Lake outpost in a summer heat wave. The camp has Starlink wifi and the dock alone produced walleye (two guys landed 66 from chairs on the dock in one windy day). One day's final tally was 167 walleyes, plus plenty of pike including a 40-inch fish caught on a jig. Despite the heat it was 'one of my all time favourites'. He called Graywood 'a first class operation' and said he'll fish with them again.

Trip Report: Blackbirch Lake with GrayWood Outfitters
Graywood was easy to deal with, good communication, nice people. Nakina Air was great, as always, and got the group in through nasty weather when other planes never got in the air. The outpost was excellent, well stocked, wired for electric with a generator, nice boats, wifi, hot shower, running water. Fishing was top notch; they had tough weather with a cold front on arrival that gave way to scorching heat. They caught plenty of big fat healthy pike and tons of chunky walleye, with an average size bigger than he normally sees even on fly-ins. The portage lake held only pike, lots of big ones, though it turned off for days at a time. He later said he re-booked, this time for Windsor Lake with three of his kids.

Blackbirch Lake - Gray Wood Outfitters August 2024
Trip report from a group of six on a seven-day trip to Blackbirch Lake. Blackbirch is 150 miles above Nakina and connected to Mistassin Lake via a short rocky channel. The fishing was great in all three lakes, as was the scenery. We had the entire place to ourselves. The cabin was extremely comfortable and well stocked. The boats were great, although a few leak, and the 15HP motors were a very nice upgrade from the 9.9s most outfitters use. We were thrilled to have running hot and cold water, a hot shower, fast StarLink wifi, and a generator that ran everything. It was A++ top notch all the way around. Weather was cold and rainy at first and then crazy hot and calm, but we still caught tons of pike and walleye; sometimes you could catch 50 in an hour, other times you couldn't buy a bite. Caught 101 and 107 walleye on two consecutive mornings.

Four of us just finished a trip to Gray Wood Outfitters Blackbirch Lake camp. We had a great time! We caught hundreds of walleyes and some very nice pike. Gray Wood is a top notch outfitter. The boats and motors work great - no leaky gas tanks. The camp has everything that's needed. The setting so far north in the boreal forest is beautiful. We saw a black bear and a bull moose. Above all, Adam and the others are professional, great communicators, and friendly. I highly recommend.

We just wrapped up an incredible week at Blackbirch Lake with Gray Wood Outfitters, and I can't recommend it enough. The fishing was absolutely phenomenal. We caught a ton of big walleye and northern pike all week. The cabin was excellent, clean, comfortable, and well equipped with everything we needed for the week. It was the perfect place to relax after long days on the water and enjoy the beauty of the Canadian wilderness. Adam was fantastic to work with from start to finish. He was responsive, helpful, and made the entire booking process simple and stress free. If you're looking for an unforgettable fishing trip with outstanding service, Blackbirch Lake is hard to beat.

Just finished a perfect week at Blackbirch Lake. Got our moose down on the second morning and then spent the rest of the time catching plenty of pike and walleye. Everything was perfect and felt like we were still at home. Starlink internet, running water and hot showers, fridge and freezer, stove, gas bbq, perfect sized boats and engines, generators and back up everything you could think of. Fish cleaning house was the perfect touch too. We will definitely be back!

Gray Woods Outfitters, Blackbirch Lake July 2025
Gray Woods Outfitters, Blackbirch Lake July 2025. The trip was excellent from the flights (Nakina Air is the best) to the accommodations to the fishing. This was my 3rd trip to Blackbirch with my son and as always, we had another exceptional experience. More quality Walleye than we cared to count and numerous Northern Pike, with each of the 3 trips having produced multiple Pike in the 40 inch plus class. Blackbirch is a great productive lake but Mistassin Lake, which is to the South and through a shallow rocky, yet navigable channel adds unlimited opportunities. Mistassin offers rocky shoals and moving water for Walleye and numerous weed beds for Pike, it is a great fishery! The portage lake to the East offers additional opportunities for Pike and exploration but does not support Walleye populations. All in all these three Lakes offer endless opportunities for exploration, great fishing and adventure.
