Summarized Review Highlights

Guests rate Gray Wood Outfitters very highly. Nearly every review gives 5 stars, and a few give 4. Many reviewers are repeat customers. Some are on their second, third, or fifth trip, and some have re-booked at other camps. Several call it the best outfitter or fly-in trip they have used. Reviews cover the Blackbirch Lake, Beteau Lake (Attawapiskat River), and Windsor Lake camps. Owner Adam Wood and the team are described as responsive, communicative, and honest, and some say Adam texted during the trip to check in.

The fishing is the most consistent praise. Guests report large numbers of walleye, with some reporting daily limits, "hundreds" over a week, or days of 100+ fish. They also report plenty of northern pike, and many mention several pike over 40 inches. One group reported 20+ pike over 40 inches across multiple trips. Reviewers say much of the fishing is close to camp, and some caught walleye from the dock. Camps are described as clean, well maintained, and well equipped. Reviewers mention a full kitchen, fridge and freezer, generator power, hot showers and running water, and Wi-Fi or Starlink. Fish cleaning stations and reliable boats and motors also come up, including 14-foot Lunds with 15 HP Mercury motors. Camp caretakers and hosts (Steve, Wayne, Ivars, and Ben) are praised for helpful fishing tips, keeping boats fueled, fixing problems quickly, and in one case organizing a shore lunch. Nakina Air Service, the flight provider, is repeatedly called excellent, including one report of flying in through bad weather. Guests also mention seeing moose, bear, and scenery. One guest got a moose during a combined hunting and fishing trip. Another says the price is reasonable and a good value.

Complaints are minor. The main one is hot weather. In heat waves with warm water, the bigger pike fishing slowed, and one 4-star review called the fishing "generally slow," though each boat still hooked a large pike. Another group saw fewer 40-inch pike than in earlier years but still caught three, along with plenty of walleye. The portage lake near Blackbirch and Beteau holds pike only, with no walleye, and one report says it turned off for days at a time. One reviewer described the accommodations as "rustic but sufficient," and another had a shower pump fail, which the caretaker replaced. Gray Wood suits anglers who want high-volume walleye and big-pike fishing, groups of friends, and father-son or family trips. It also suits experienced fly-in guests and first-timers who want a well-equipped, comfortable outpost with good communication. Hunters can also use it for moose. It is a better fit for those who want catch numbers and comfort than for those who need a luxury lodge.

A Canadian Fishing Adventure: Gray Wood Outfitters
We had an awesome time visiting Gray Wood Outfitter's Beteau Lake outpost camp! This location in Ontario's Superior Country is known for its big northern pike. Beteau Lake is part of the Attawapiskat River system, celebrated for its remoteness and minimal fishing pressure. The area's conservation efforts and catch-and-release policies contribute to thriving fish populations. The possibility of catching up to 100 walleyes in a day can be done. We had numerous double and TRIPLE hook-ups on walleyes. This river system is fairly easy to navigate with plenty of good fishing just minutes away from the camp. You can catch fish right off the dock too! The cabins there are comfortable and spacious. Beteau Lake Outpost can accommodate 1-10 people with four sleeping cabins. There is also a mini-lodge with a full kitchen, refrigerator, stove, cookware, and eating utensils. You'll also have access to a hot shower and WiFi. The on-site staff are very helpful too. And they know how to find and catch fish! The boats provided are perfect for navigating this river system with plenty of space to store your gear and land a big fish! If you're looking for an amazing far-away destination with incredible walleye and pike fishing, check out Gray Wood Outfitters.

Fishing Beteau Lake & the magical Attawapiskat River
Trip report from a week at Gray Wood Outfitters' Beteau Lake Outpost with the 'Walleye Wanderers' (about a 130-mile, 55-minute flight). The camp has four spacious, comfortable cabins plus a well-equipped common kitchen building, hot and cold running water, WiFi and satellite TV, a shower house, fish cleaning station and a stable dock. The grounds are clean and maintained. Beteau is truly a fish factory where the Walleye are very plentiful. Several healthy pike over 40 inches were caught and released during the week, and the camp has been updated and renovated since Gray Wood took over. 'The fishing is fantastic, and the place is simply magical.'

Overall, this was BY FAR, the best fishing trip that I & my 4 fishing partners have ever had!
Air travel, provided by Nakina Air Service was great for our trip, which ran from 27 AUG – 4 SEP 2021. The camp itself is accurately depicted on the web site and cabins were clean, appeared well maintained & laid out to easily accommodate at least 8, although there were only 4 in our party. All the appliances, including full size frig, stove/oven, freezer & propane heaters in the kitchen & cabins worked well, along with the satellite TV. Wifi also worked. Elec power was provided by Honda generator & worked flawlessly. Shower caused a problem toward the end of the trip but a new pump was installed by Wayne (Camp Caretaker) & issue was resolved. Although he just arrived at Beteau, Wayne was, in a word, incredible! He is a jack of all trades & master of many! A real keeper!! Boats were 14 foot Lunds or equivalent with new 15 HP Mercury motors and were excellent. We caught 8 x 40"+; 5-6 x 37"+; a bunch in the 34"+ range as well as many over 30". Within 2 hours the first afternoon, I caught two 40"+. I've been on 15+ trips to Canada without a 40"+ & I got 4 myself! Both the Northerns & the Walleyes were exceptionally healthy-looking fish, especially heavy for their length & put up fantastic fights. All the Northerns were released in accordance with Camp policy. Adam Wood of Gray Wood Outfitters, texted several times to ensure that all was going well & see if we needed anything.

Overall, this was BY FAR, the best fishing trip that I & my 4 fishing partners have ever had! Thanx to all.
Trip ran 27 Aug - 4 Sep 2021. Air travel by Nakina Air Service was great. Cabins were clean, well maintained and laid out to easily accommodate at least 8. Appliances, generator, WiFi and satellite TV all worked well. When the shower pump failed, camp caretaker Wayne installed a new one and was 'incredible'. Boats were 14 foot Lunds with new 15 HP Mercury motors and were excellent. Fishing was AWESOME even with very low water: 450+ Northerns and 250 Walleyes, including 8 pike 40"+ and a biggest walleye of 24.5". Most fish were caught within about 5 minutes of camp. Adam Wood texted several times to make sure all was going well. 'BY FAR, the best fishing trip' the group had ever had.

Graywood Outfitters (page 2 reply; trip about 3 years earlier, apparently before the 2020 ownership change)
Went to Beteau Lake approximately 3 years ago in mid-June'ish and was by far the worst fly in fishing trip in my 30 years going North. Different ownership certainly won't hurt. The mosquitoes and horrible cabins made it almost uninhabitable!!!! Boats and motors were junk. Fishing for Pike was not good at all and we fished hard for them……weather and water levels were not ideal but expected so much more than it produced! Caught a couple 28+" Walleye but overall the Walleye fishing was not consistent or good during our stay.

Graywood was highly recommended by the son of a fishing legend! Beteau Lake offered an exceptional fishing experience, several pike over 40" with excellent walleye catches. Comfortable rustic accommodations, facilities and boating equipment. Ben was most helpful in making the trip a great experience. Adam was responsive to all questions in trip planning. Highly recommended Graywood for the ultimate experience.

Our host and staff member Ivars was amazing he treated us like family, took care of all our needs and issues and best of all put us on fish. Gray Wood should be very proud to have him as an employee. Here I am waiting for the airplane to pick us up after a great week at Beteau. We didn't get the numbers of 40+ northerns we had in past years, but we did get three. Probably 10, 39 inch and I can't count how many over 30. Every day we caught our limit of walleye and head walleye for supper several different ways. Our host Steve was very helpful and he's just a great guy. I'll be back!

This is a truly majestic place, you get the scenery of the Canadian wilderness, the thrill of captaining your own boat up through a fast moving river and the back bays that yield bigger stronger fish than any lake can replicate. We didn't need a depth finder or any fancy electronics, we just had our map of the river and found our childlike love of fishing again as we drove up the river and picked out spots that looked good for fishing. Truth be told the fish are probably everywhere with the Mighty Attiwapiskat river working as a true Monster fish factory by supplying endless white fish, sucker, and baitfish for the Pike and walleye to eat. We have been back multiple times and we have caught 20+ 40+ inch pike and 25+ in walleye. You can troll, jig, or cast lures. If the fishing was all they had i would continue to go back but they also have a great staff that stays in touch, a great camp host at Beteau and Nakina Airport is a top notch partner to work with for flights out. We saw Moose, bear, countless birds, we experienced a quietness only a remote camp can provide and built memories only a good group of guys can create. It's a lifetime bucket list type adventure, book it- you won't be disappointed.

Gray Wood outfitters has delivered on one awesome adventure package ! This fly in trip was amazing. Beteau Lake offered scenic views and unparalleled fishing. So much that its soured fishing back home for us. We cannot wait to come back! The camp was very well run and had all the amenities needed. Our guide Steve was amazing, knowledgeable and just an all around rock solid fella. From the arrival at Nakina Air (Best bush plane pilots and Tracy is amazing) right through to getting back in the truck somber and missing the camp and people we met as strangers and left as friends. I cannot recommend Gray Wood enough. If a fly in fishing/hunting or hybrid adventure is on your bucket list..... Contact Gray Wood. You wont be disappointed.
