Overview

Pickerel Arm Camp is a fishing and hunting outfitter based at Sioux Lookout in northwestern Ontario. The operation consists of a drive-in base camp situated on Pickerel Arm, a 20-mile branch of Minnitaki Lake, along with a fleet of remote fly-in outpost camps spread across multiple lakes and one river system. The outfitter is operated by Lee and Julie Edwardson and is a member of the Northern Ontario Tourist Outfitters Association (NOTO) and Ontario's Sunset Country tourism region.

In total, the operation offers 9 drive-in housekeeping cabins at the base camp and up to 10 remote fly-in outpost locations, each on a different lake or river. Outpost lakes include Wapesi Lake, Otatakan Lake, Blackstone Lake, Fawcett Lake, Kabikwabik Lake, Lac Seul, Little Miniss Lake, Keikewabik Lake, and the Wapesi River, among others. The camp is open from the third Saturday of May each year through the fall after moose hunting season.

Best for: Groups and families looking for either a drive-in base camp experience on a large lake system or a self-guided fly-in outpost on a remote lake, with walleye and pike as the primary targets.
Best time: The camp operates from the third Saturday of May through fall; walleye and pike fishing is available all summer, with the Wapesi River outpost noted as especially productive in May and June when water levels are high.

The Fishing

The base camp on Pickerel Arm of Minnitaki Lake offers access to walleye, northern pike, lake trout, and trophy-size smallmouth bass. The arm provides varied structure including Moonlight Falls near the south end and deep water at Lyons Bay, and connects to Minnitaki Lake's 240 miles of shoreline, three adjoining lakes, and multiple rivers. Fly-in outposts extend the range considerably — walleye and northern pike are the primary targets at virtually all outpost lakes, with muskie available at Tuktegweik Bay on Lac Seul, lake trout accessible on select deeper lakes, and perch common on many outpost waters. Conservation rules are in place at the outposts, with walleye over 18 inches and northern pike over 27.5 inches required to be released to maintain fish populations.

Accommodations

The drive-in base camp has 9 housekeeping cabins. The largest is a log cabin accommodating 8 to 10 people; all other units sleep 4 to 6. Each cabin includes a fully equipped modern kitchen, double or single beds with linens, a bathroom with shower, electric heat, and a screened porch. Towels are available upon request. Staple grocery items are sold at the main lodge. The fly-in outpost cabins are fully equipped for self-catering housekeeping and vary in size by location; outpost cabins feature solar-powered lighting, showers with hot water, and a satellite phone for communication with base camp. Boats and motors with gas included are provided at all outpost locations.

Summarized Review Highlights

Pickerel Arm Camp, located on Minnitaki Lake near Sioux Lookout in Ontario, Canada, carries a strong overall reputation among repeat visitors. The camp is owned and operated by Lee Edwardson and his wife Julie, whose family has run the operation since 1974, and that long-standing history appears to contribute to the loyalty guests show — at least one reviewer has returned more than 25 times, and others explicitly state they plan to return over competing options from roughly a dozen other Canadian resorts they have tried.

Guests consistently praise the walleye fishing, with multiple accounts of excellent catches, including large fish and high daily totals. The camp offers a base camp experience as well as outpost options, giving guests some flexibility in how they want to fish. The owners receive positive mentions by name, and the camp's track record across many seasons is viewed favorably. It is worth noting that fishing success can vary with conditions — one reviewer reported slower action during a cooler-than-normal period when fish moved to deeper water, though the owner communicated openly about the reasons, which guests appeared to appreciate.

The reviews available are limited in number and light on detail regarding lodging, food, and staff beyond the owners themselves, so a full picture of those elements is difficult to draw from this sample. One humorous but honest note from a long-time guest suggests the camp's handyman can be particular about equipment being broken, which may simply reflect the realities of a remote fly-in operation where repairs are not trivial. Based on what reviewers describe, this destination appears best suited for groups of fishing buddies focused on walleye, anglers who value a family-run camp with decades of experience, and those open to returning year after year rather than seeking a one-time novelty experience.

Fishing builds friendships: Janesville couple's Pickerel Arm Camp delivers again
We caught plenty of fish and feasted on walleyes every night. But we didn't catch nearly as many as the amazing total of big walleyes we boated when we fished out of Pickerel Arm's base camp two years ago. Lee Edwardson, who with his wife, Julie, owns and operates Pickerel Arm Camp on Minnitaki Lake near Sioux Lookout, told me last week that it was almost as if fall arrived early to that region of Ontario, Canada. The weather has been cool. The fish have been holding in deep water. If his September guests were there, fishing their usual spots, he figured they'd be enjoying success. Joining me again were two of my good friends — Bill Simmons of Janesville and Brian McGraw of Muscoda. Joining us for the first time were Mark Lanser and Terry Connors of Janesville and Dale Herion, who lives between Janesville and Edgerton. I kept notes from our 2011 trip, and other than two spectacular days to start that excursion, the number of big walleyes we caught the rest of that week was on par, day to day, with this year's trip. Lee's parents, Dick and Judy, bought the camp in 1974. Lee started spending summers there at age 3 and took over when illness struck his late father at a young age. I will say this — when I next return to Canada, I plan to fish out of Pickerel Arm. I've fished about a dozen different Canadian lakes and out of a dozen different resorts through the years.
