Sioux Lookout, Ontario
Fly-in outpost operator based in Sioux Lookout with over a dozen cabins on remote lakes across northwestern Ontario.
Slate Falls Outposts has been operating fly-in fishing outpost camps out of Sioux Lookout, Ontario since 1986. The operation currently runs 12 outpost cabins spread across multiple remote lakes in northwestern Ontario, including Lake St. Joseph, Miniss Lake, Hooker Lake, Arc Lake, Carling Lake, Roadhouse Lake, and Lac Seul. The water base and staging area are located on Pelican Lake in Sioux Lookout, where guests check in and can use an on-site bunkhouse the night before their fly-out.
Over the decades, the outfitter has steadily expanded, adding new locations while maintaining a self-guided, housekeeping-style format. Owner Ryan Runge manages day-to-day operations, and a camp attendant is kept on-site at the Lake St. Joseph Eagle Island location to handle routine camp tasks. Slate Falls Outposts also operates or is affiliated with Slate Falls Airways, which provides float plane transport to all outpost locations.
Established: 1986
The two primary target species across all Slate Falls Outposts locations are walleye and northern pike. On Lac Seul, anglers can also target smallmouth bass and muskie. The outfitter has maintained a conservation and trophy-release program for over two decades, requiring catch-and-release of larger fish while allowing guests to keep within conservation licence limits. Lake St. Joseph offers diverse structure including shallow bays, deep-water reefs, river inflows, and boulder shorelines. Walleye exceeding 30 inches and northern pike over 49 inches have been recorded at these locations. Other lakes in the network, such as Miniss Lake, are noted for large northern pike, while Maskara Lake is described as accessible for anglers of all skill levels. All outposts are self-guided; guided service is available as an optional add-on.
All outpost cabins are housekeeping-style, meaning guests cook and clean for themselves, though an optional food plan is available. Standard amenities across every site include separate bedrooms (mostly without bunk beds), fully equipped kitchens with four-burner gas stoves and ovens, solar lighting, solar-powered refrigerators, propane chest freezers, on-demand hot water, large eating areas, comfortable furniture, covered decks or screened porches, boardwalks from dock to cabin, fish cleaning stations with running water, boat slip docks with handrails, cut firewood, portable generators for device charging, and satellite internet. Cabins accommodate varying group sizes, with some holding up to 10 people. A bunkhouse at the Sioux Lookout water base is available for the night before departure.
Amenities available at one or more of this outfitter's properties.
Guests stage out of Sioux Lookout, Ontario, which is approximately a 3.5-hour drive north of International Falls, Minnesota. From the water base on Pelican Lake, guests are flown to their outpost cabin by float plane, with flight times ranging from 20 to 45 minutes depending on the destination lake. All outpost locations are air-access only, with the exception of the two newer Lac Seul cabins (Tom's Landing and Tuk Bay), which also have a boat-in option for guests who bring their own boats. The float plane fleet includes turbine Otters and Cessna Caravans operated through Slate Falls Airways.
