Overview

Temagami Outfitting Co. (TOC) is a canoe rental and guiding operation located in the town of Temagami, in northeastern Ontario. Operating since 1926, the company outfits and guides trips across the Temagami region, which contains over 4,700 kilometres of canoe routes through backcountry lakes, rivers, and provincial parks including Lady Evelyn-Smoothwater Wilderness Park.

The operation is run by Erik and his team, who offer a range of services from self-guided canoe rentals and vehicle shuttles to fully guided expeditions and chartered fishing adventures. The company also provides route planning advice, topographical maps, and complete gear outfitting for groups of all sizes and skill levels, from families on short trips to experienced paddlers on multi-week expeditions.

Established: 1926

Best for: Paddlers and fly anglers of all experience levels looking for self-guided or fully guided backcountry canoe and fishing trips in the Temagami wilderness.
Best time: The main paddling and fishing season runs spring through fall, with winter programs available for ice fishing and snowshoeing.

The Fishing

Temagami Outfitting Co. offers guided fly fishing trips into remote rivers and back-lakes of the Temagami region, targeting wild eastern brook trout. These adventure fishing trips involve canoe travel, portaging, and backcountry camping, with guides leading clients to largely undiscovered waters. The company partners with sofly.ca for its fly fishing program. Anglers can expect to fish productive runs, rapids, and riffles throughout the Temagami waterway system, with dry flies and streamers both producing fish on five-weight rods. The operation also offers chartered fishing adventures more broadly, and the surrounding Temagami region holds additional species including walleye, northern pike, lake trout, and smallmouth bass in its extensive lake system.

Accommodations

Temagami Outfitting Co. is primarily a canoe outfitter and guide service rather than a fixed-lodge operation. Guests on guided and self-guided trips stay at established backcountry campsites within the Temagami Cluster of Parks and surrounding waterways. Winter program participants stay in Esker and Snow Trekker canvas tents with wood stoves at a winter base camp, and all winter camping and ice fishing gear is included in those packages. The company does not appear to operate fixed cabins or a main lodge.

Summarized Review Highlights

Temagami Outfitting Co (TOC) enjoys an overwhelmingly positive reputation among guests, with nearly all reviewers awarding five stars and many returning for multiple trips. Owner Erik and his team are consistently described as knowledgeable, professional, and genuinely invested in making each trip a success. The family-owned operation has built a loyal following over the years, and the addition of an on-site bar and restaurant has been a welcome improvement noted by recent visitors. The overall tone across reviews is one of trust and enthusiasm, with several guests describing TOC as the ideal starting point for any Temagami wilderness adventure.

Guests consistently praise the depth of local knowledge Erik and his staff bring to trip planning, from route selection and fishing spots to safety considerations and ice conditions. Equipment — canoes, kayaks, PFDs, maps, and camping supplies — is described as well-maintained and fit for purpose, though one reviewer noted that the boats and paddles showed some wear while still performing reliably. Food packages supplied for longer trips received positive marks, though at least one group felt the quantities were on the light side and recommended bringing extra snacks. The fishing, particularly for brook trout, walleye, and other wilderness species, receives high praise. The staff's flexibility and informal friendliness — including a memorable account of an employee simply lending out tarps free of charge — stood out to multiple reviewers as a distinguishing quality.

The only notable complaint in the reviews involves a pickup timing issue at a canoe landing, where a group waited over four hours for retrieval despite repeated calls to the office. This appears to be an isolated incident rather than a recurring theme, but it is worth keeping in mind for those on tight schedules. Overall, TOC seems best suited to canoe trippers — from first-timers seeking guided planning to experienced paddlers wanting a knowledgeable local resource — as well as fly anglers, small groups of friends, and families comfortable with backcountry camping. Those looking for a fully catered lodge experience will find this is a self-guided or lightly guided outfitter rather than a resort operation.

Very glad to have planned my first Temagami trip with TOC; highly reassured in every conversation with Erik, and the building is truly amazing. Located right off the highway, directly on the water, with it's own bar & restaurant. Additional gas station, and restaurant next door. Hospitality: INCREDIBLE! We were welcomed in upon arrival, and return. Food and drinks, and an enjoyable de-brief of the trip. Guidance: Excellent. Erik used NASA imagery to assess ice conditions, and quickly suggested a route that was ideal for our group. Equipment: Canoes are well cared for with repairs on site. Brand new NRS PFD's with adjustable shoulder straps. Even provided a spare paddle (just in case!). They helped load the canoe on the car, and strap it down with me. 100% recommend booking a trip through Temagami with some guidance from TOC.

High expectation met and surpassed.
They listen. Then they build you the best wilderness experience you could possibly hope for. I'm one of the many repeat customers TOC has... I would be amazed if anyone could score them less than 5 out of five. Keep doing what you do TOC.

In Search of Solitude and Wild Brook Trout
The fishing out of The Temagami Outfitting Company was great. We were fortunate to catch a fantastic number of quality brook trout in a variety of ways, including on dry flies. They were coloured up wonderfully for the forthcoming spawn and were voracious eaters. We caught most of our fish on size 10 woolley buggers in natural organic colours and Chernobyl ants. Five-weight rods did the trick with floating lines. The scenery was perfect and to top off the week-long trip, we literally didn't see another human being. The portages are well-defined, the campsites are pristine, and the stars were magnificent. The Temagami Outfitting Company has a unique way of doing business. They encourage play. They encourage outdoor time. They encourage tradition. Erik and his team will ensure your trip is planned to the hilt if you want, or will simply give you the advice you need to have a safe DIY adventure.

Three hours late
We were waiting at a landing for our canoe to be picked up for an insane amount of time. They new we were meant to be there for over 4 hours and they still have not shown up they are lucky we have not just left it here this ruins our plans for the day and delays our vacation we tried to call twice but they and they keep saying they are on their way but their office is just 28 mins away I hope no one else has the experience we had.

10 days of portaging, wading, beaver dams and LAKES!
Full outfitting provided by this historic Outfitters for six of us to lose ourselves in this superb area. A wonderful experience & the food supplied was excellent though not enough for some. You may need extra snacks! The boats and paddles supplied were a little tired but performed faultlessly. I should have 'carried' a little less both in my pack & on my body but the water was warm for swimming in the evenings to wash off the sweat of the day and the nights cool enough to mostly dissuade the worst bugs other than in swampy areas. Worst portage - Gull Lake from the north, best campsite - Racoon Point, most interesting visit - Wanapetei Camp, best run - from Cross Lake down Temagami River and then back up through Red Cedar to Loon Bay. An experience that will linger a long time in the memory for this OAP.

Great value and the friendliest service I can recall anywhere
This was my second time dealing with tamagami outfitters and was happy I came back. Rented a canoe for $20 for the day, the owner cared not when it was brought back. So laid back and friendly. Last year I came here to buy or rent tarps to save my camping trip from torrential rains. Instead of renting them to me the shop keep gave me the tarps and rope and said bring them back when you're done. Basically amazing, friendly people here. The world needs more places like this.
