Overview

The Outpost Company is a fly-in fishing outfitter based in Minaki, Ontario, operating six self-guided outpost cabins on remote lakes in the Sunset Country region of northwestern Ontario. Five of the six cabins sit on their own private lakes, with each outpost being the only cabin on its respective water. The camps are spread across a range of fishing environments, from large multi-lake systems such as Chase Lake to more intimate single-lake destinations like Salvesen and Wingiskus.

The operation is run from the River Air floatplane base in Minaki. Staff check in on guests every couple of days by air, and packages include round-trip float plane transportation, boats, motors, fuel, a satellite phone, ice, and boating supplies. Optional add-ons such as pre-ordered live bait and pre-arranged meal provisioning are also available.

Best for: Self-guided groups of four to twelve anglers looking for private lake access and a range of species including walleye, northern pike, and smallmouth bass.

The Fishing

The Outpost Company's six lakes collectively offer walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, and lake trout. Walleye fishing is available at all outposts, either on the main lake or via portage lakes. Northern pike are present across all six outpost lakes and many adjacent portage waters. Smallmouth bass fishing is a particular focus at Wingiskus Lake, a clear-water lake of roughly 3,600 acres featuring rock shoals, cobblestone points, and weed beds, and strong bass fishing is also found at Bee, Chase, Right, and Salvesen Lakes. Lake trout can be targeted at the Eden Lake portage accessible from Bee Lake. Sharpstone Lake, located approximately 145 miles north of the Minaki base, is the most remote outpost and is noted for walleye and northern pike. Many lakes connect to portage lakes, giving anglers access to additional water without relocating camps. Fishing is self-guided, and guests use 16-foot Alumacraft boats with electric-start 15 hp Mercury motors.

Accommodations

Each of the six outpost cabins is a housekeeping cabin equipped with comfy beds, a fully outfitted kitchen with cooking equipment, a propane BBQ, a propane fish cooker, an indoor shower, a flushing toilet, and hot and cold running water. Solar power is the primary energy source at all cabins, with a backup generator also available. Cabin sizes range from two bedrooms sleeping four to six guests up to four bedrooms sleeping up to twelve, depending on the outpost. The cabins have a rustic character while still providing standard modern amenities. Meals are self-catered; guests bring their own food or can arrange pre-provisioning through the outfitter.

Summarized Review Highlights

Based on the available review, there is only one piece of customer feedback to draw from, and it reflects a strongly negative experience. A reviewer reported a confrontational encounter in the backcountry with an individual they identified as the outfitter's owner, describing aggressive and threatening language, including an alleged statement that he would "run over" the reviewers if he encountered them at a specific fishing location. The reviewer also noted that children were present during the escalation, which they found additionally troubling. With only a single one-star review available, it is not possible to assess the outfitter's overall reputation, fishing quality, accommodations, food, or staff in any balanced way.

Because there are no positive reviews in this dataset to weigh against the complaint, no consistent praise can be identified for fishing success, lodging comfort, guide quality, or any other aspect of the guest experience. The sole review focuses entirely on an interpersonal conflict in a public fishing area rather than on the outfitter's services or facilities directly.

With only one review on record, no reliable recommendation can be made about who this destination is best suited for. Prospective guests would benefit from seeking out a broader range of reviews before making a decision. The single available account raises concerns about how disputes with other anglers in the area may be handled, which may be worth considering for anyone planning a trip to this region.

While out enjoying a beautiful day of fishing in the back country we were approached on snow mobile by this ignorant entitled person claiming he was Halley. He asked why are we fishing where we were because we have lots of lakes over in Manitoba. He grilled us asking about live minnows. Smuggly replying to the folks he was with they won't be catching as they don't have live minnows. He also stated he hated people going out and finding old holes to fish in. We have been going there for years so he was making assumptions. He then told us he was going to his next spot and if he sees us in that spot at a later time he would run us down, make no mistake I will run you over. If this is how a camp operates folks should know who you are giving your money to. He also had children on the back of his snowmobile while he tried to escalate the situation. This type of conduct isn't what you would expect from a so called professional outfitter or outdoorsman. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Most outposts are a 20 to 25 minute float plane flight from Minaki; Sharpstone Lake, the most remote destination, is approximately 145 miles north of the base.
