Overview

Thunderhook Fly-Ins is based at Armstrong Station, Ontario, and operates a seaplane airbase on Highway 527 that serves as the departure point for all trips. The operation offers three distinct fly-in options: more than eleven remote outpost camps scattered across Wabakimi Wilderness Provincial Park, the Smoothrock Resort on 24,000-acre Smoothrock Lake, and the Whitewater Retreat overlooking a 26,000-acre lake. The outfitter is currently owned and operated by the Scott Family, who took over after previously being customers themselves.

The company reports a repeat clientele rate in excess of 80 percent and has been serving fly-in anglers for decades. Guests flying to any destination are transported by certified air carriers, including De Havilland Turbine Otters and De Havilland Piston Beavers operated by NDK Air Ltd., maintained to Transport Canada standards. All packages include the round-trip flight, accommodations, boat use, and unlimited fuel.

Best for: Anglers of all experience levels — from first-time fly-in guests to returning wilderness fishermen — traveling as individuals, small groups, families, or large corporate parties.
Best time: The operation runs a summer season with trips available for walleye, northern pike, lake trout, and brook trout; specific open and close dates are not publicly confirmed and should be verified directly with the outfitter.

The Fishing

The lakes and waterways within and surrounding Wabakimi Wilderness Provincial Park hold walleye, northern pike, lake trout, and brook trout. Walleye are the primary target species across most of the outpost lakes, rivers, and flowages, with anglers reporting high catch counts. Northern pike are present throughout the system, including trophy-sized fish in weedy bays and shallows. Lake trout are found in the deeper, cooler lakes, and brook trout are available at select outpost locations such as Shabuskwia Lake. Specific outpost lakes on the roster include Attwood, Luella, Pringle, Smoothrock, Shabuskwia, Keezhik, Whitewater, and Machawian Lakes.

Anglers fish from 14-foot and 16-foot Lund boats equipped with Yamaha and Mercury outboard motors, swivel seats with cushions, life jackets, and landing nets. The motor fleet is updated annually. Guiding is available at Smoothrock Resort for those who want assistance navigating the large lake.

Accommodations

Accommodation options range from fully equipped housekeeping cabins at the Smoothrock Resort and Whitewater Retreat to more remote outpost cabins. Smoothrock Resort features shore-front cabins with electric appliances, fully equipped kitchens, propane grills, screened-in porches overlooking a sandy beach, a modern double shower house, a centrally located fish cleaning house, a fully stocked store, and satellite Wi-Fi. Whitewater Retreat offers beachfront cabins accommodating two to eight people under a housekeeping plan, with wood stoves, refrigerators, cooking ranges, and satellite Wi-Fi. All cabins include bedding, bath towels, and basic supplies. The outpost cabins include screened-in fishing houses, fully equipped kitchens, and hot and cold running water. Before departure, guests can overnight at the airbase in a six-unit bunkhouse.

Summarized Review Highlights

Thunderhook Fly-Ins holds a strong reputation among guests, with reviews consistently positive across multiple platforms. The Facebook page reflects a 100% recommendation rate, and forum reviews largely echo that sentiment with high ratings. Guests describe the overall experience as well-organized and enjoyable, with the owners noted as friendly and accommodating. The operation services several outpost lakes including Smoothrock, Moonshine, Linklater, and Funger, giving returning guests options to explore different waters across multiple trips.

Fishing is the clear highlight in guest feedback. Walleye and northern pike are the primary targets, and reviewers consistently report high catch volumes, particularly at spots like the deeper hole connecting the Funger and Smoothrock systems, where non-stop action and frequent double hookups are described. Guides Marcus and Luke are specifically praised for being knowledgeable, patient, and fun to fish with. Cabins are described as clean and comfortable, and the overall logistics of the fly-in experience are called well-organized. That said, guests note that trophy-sized fish are not guaranteed — walleye in the 14 to 19 inch range are common, and consistent catches over 25 inches are not the norm. September fishing can also be slower for certain species like pike, as one reviewer noted.

Thunderhook appears best suited for anglers who prioritize high catch volume and action over trophy hunting, as well as those looking for a relaxed, well-run fly-in experience. Groups of friends or returning guests looking to try different outpost lakes will likely feel at home here. First-time fly-in guests would benefit from the organized setup and personable staff. Those specifically targeting trophy walleye or record pike may want to set expectations accordingly based on what past guests have reported.

Loved Smoothrock with Thunderhook – Great September Pike Trip
I fished Smoothrock last September with Thunderhook Outfitters and loved it. Only got one big pike (September can be tough), but the fish my boat partner caught had a head as big as an alligator LOL!

Multiple Great Trips via Thunderhook – Outposts and Smoothrock
Are you going through Thunderhook Fly-ins? We used them for multiple trips to different fly-in outposts (Moonshine, Linklater, and Funger). Funger is actually on the same system and connected to Smoothrock. If you go up the arm of the lake between Smoothrock and Funger most of it will be fairly shallow (3 to 6 feet deep). But you will hit one stretch that is deeper, probably 25 or 30 feet deep. The walleyes and some northerns were just stacked in this hole. Each person could catch 100 walleyes a day if you wanted to (we did for a couple of days). The fish were not big (most 14 to 19 inches) but the action was non-stop, many, many doubles. The owners are really nice and we always had a good experience on their trips. We typically did not get any really big fish (over 25 inches for walleyes) but always had lots of action.

Unforgettable Trip
Thunderhook Fly-In was an unforgettable trip! Marcus and Luke were top notch, fantastic guides, (they like whiskey and Coors or Bush Light also be a good tipper) patient, and made the fishing both fun and successful. We caught a ton of walleye and pike, enjoyed beautiful scenery, and had a blast spending time with the Snag Bros. The cabins were clean and comfortable, and the whole experience was perfectly organized. Can't wait to come back!
