Overview

Twin Lakes Outfitters and Wilderness Camps is a fly-in outpost operation based in Nakina, Ontario, in the far north of the province. The business is owned and operated by Chad and Dawn Haakenson, who purchased the operation in 2006. Chad manages the on-the-ground work — maintaining cabins, boats, motors, and docks — while Dawn handles bookings and the business side. The outfitter reports that more than 80 percent of its guests are repeat customers.

The operation runs 20 outpost camps spread across 17 different fly-in lakes. All lakes sit within the Arctic Watershed, well north of Nakina, and anglers fly between 20 and 90 air miles from the staging base on Cordingley Lake to reach them. The outfitter also offers fly-in moose hunting packages in season.

Established: 2006

Best for: Self-guided groups — including families, couples, and all-male fishing parties — seeking high-volume walleye fishing at remote, housekeeping fly-in outpost camps.
Best time: Walleye season opens on the third Saturday in May and runs through December; spring and early summer are generally considered the strongest period for overall numbers and trophy opportunities.

Highlights

20 outpost camps on 17 fly-in lakes
Walleye, Northern Pike, Lake Trout, Brook Trout
Camps 20 to 90 air miles from base
Float plane access via Cordingley Lake, Nakina
Housekeeping cabins with running water and shower
Boats and motors provided at each camp
Fly-in moose hunting also available

The Fishing

Walleye is the primary target across all outpost lakes, with Northern Pike available on every lake as well. Two lakes offer Lake Trout fishing, and Brook Trout can be found in the rivers and streams connected to several lakes — at some camps year-round, and at others only in spring. Most lakes also hold jumbo Perch. Walleye are most common in the one- to three-pound range, with the four- to six-pound class also present, and occasional trophy fish over 30 inches reported by guests. Northern Pike over 20 pounds have been caught at multiple camps, with some reaching over 30 pounds. Brook Trout over six pounds and Lake Trout in the 25-pound range have also been recorded by guests.

Fishing is self-guided from boats provided at each outpost camp. Standard tackle for walleye includes jigs with white twistertails, with trolling along breaklines and working structural features also productive. Anglers fishing the Ogoki River system camps — including Esser Lake, Trapper's Run, and Patience Lake — have access to Brook Trout fishing throughout the season.

Accommodations

Each outpost is a housekeeping cabin equipped for self-sufficient stays. Most cabins have been recently remodeled and include a propane stove and fridge, woodstove for heat, hot and cold running water, and a shower. Additional amenities at many camps include a BBQ, fish fryer, solar lights, a solar chest freezer in an outbuilding, and a fish-cleaning house. Camps are sized to accommodate groups of two to eight people depending on the location. The cabins have no radios or phones and there is no cellphone service; satellite phones and texting devices are available for rent from the outfitter. Boats provided at each camp are typically 14-foot Lund, Naden, or Smokercraft with 8 or 9.9 hp Mercury motors; smaller portage boats are available at river camps.

Summarized Review Highlights

Based on available reviews, Twin Lakes Outfitters earns strong praise from guests, with reviewers expressing genuine satisfaction and indicating they would return. Chad and Dawn, who appear to run the operation, are specifically called out by name as attentive and easy to work with. The outfitter seems to appeal to both first-time fly-in guests and those already familiar with remote Canadian fishing, and the overall tone from reviewers is enthusiastic.

Guests consistently highlight the quality of the cabins, describing them as exceeding expectations. The float plane experience through partner operator Nakina Air is mentioned as a memorable highlight in itself. Staff responsiveness stands out strongly — in one noted example, Chad went out of his way to arrange a tire repair for a guest stranded with a flat on a remote logging road, having a replacement ready upon the guest's return from the lake. Fishing at the outpost lakes (Ankcorn and Abby are both mentioned) produced solid pike action described as near-constant, with walleye fishing available as well, though results there were more variable and described as hit-or-miss depending on conditions.

There are no recurring complaints in the available reviews. The one practical note worth flagging is the road route to the outfitter — at least one guest encountered rough logging roads by following GPS directions, and it is suggested that first-time visitors ask Chad about the preferred alternate route to avoid potential tire or vehicle damage. Guests who want guaranteed, consistent walleye fishing should factor in that results on smaller lakes can vary. Overall, this destination appears best suited for anglers looking for a remote fly-in experience with strong pike fishing, first-timers who want a well-supported introduction to outpost camping, and pairs or small groups — such as fathers and sons — seeking a rugged but comfortable wilderness trip.

Twin Lakes Outfitters - Canada - Ankcorn lake fly in
My son and I just returned from Ankcorn lake through Twin Lakes Outfitters and had a great time! Let me just start by saying this was our first fly-in and was a little nervous about the whole thing, especially on what outfitter to chose. Our trip up from Akron Ohio (over 900 miles) was absolutely beautiful and flawless, until we hit one of the dirt logging roads by the choice of my stupid GPS and got a flat tire. If you go to TLO ask Chad for the alternate route, a little longer, but trust me, a much smoother route that we used on the way back. Just speaking to the customer service side of TLO and my flat tire fiasco, there really aren't too many tire stores up there, but in telling Chad about my situation, he quickly said to just leave the rim and tire with him and when I got back from the lake he would have the tire fixed up for me. Well, he didn't disappoint, he had another tire mounted up and ready to go and waiting when I got back, impressive! In regards to the cabin at Ankcorn, it was top notch also and surpassed what I had envisioned. The float plane flight in and out by Nakina air was one of the coolest things I can remember doing in a long time. Ankcorn lake is relatively small, about 3 miles, but still didn't disappoint for the fishing. I would say though that the Walleye fishing was hit and miss, but the pike fishing was non-stop. The one day after a storm blew through, we got into a school of walleye and were pulling doubles non-stop on .125 ounce white jigs with white mister twisters. The pike hit anything and everything, mostly on the 18"-24" size, but we did get a couple in the mid 30" range. We were definitely happy with our choice in using TLO and wouldn't hesitate in using them again, but maybe a little bigger lake. Canada is one of the most beautiful places on earth! Cant wait to go back!
