Overview

Wallace Lake Lodge & Outposts is operated by the Hnatishin family — James, Joe, and Paul — and has been hosting guests since 2010. The main lodge sits on Wallace Lake, 19 km (12 miles) east of Bissett, Manitoba, on the edge of Atikaki Provincial Wilderness Park. It is the last drive-to access point before the park's remote backcountry.

Beyond the main lodge, the operation includes four fly-in outpost cabins on Obukowin Lake, Carroll Lake, Gammon River, and Craven Lake, plus a day-use boat cache at Tam Guy Lake. The main lodge was constructed in 2011 and the outpost camps are accessed by floatplane from Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba, with shuttle options available from Winnipeg International Airport.

Established: 2010

Best for: Anglers, families, and small groups looking for self-guided fly-in outpost fishing or a drive-to lakeside base camp in eastern Manitoba.
Best time: The lodge operates a summer season opening in late spring once ice is off the lakes; walleye and northern pike fishing is the primary draw through the summer months.

The Fishing

The waters across the Wallace Lake Lodge system hold walleye, northern pike, perch, and whitefish, with lake trout also reported at some locations. Each outpost offers a distinct fishing setting: Carroll Lake gives access to broad shorelines and the Gammon River system; Craven Lake features shallow bays and weedy structure; Gammon River Outpost puts anglers on fast water with rapids; and Obukowin Lake is noted for shallow-water walleye fishing. Tam Guy Lake is available as a one-day fly-out destination for walleye and northern pike. The main lodge at Wallace Lake also provides access to Siderock Lake.

Fishing at the outposts is self-guided. Boats and motors are included. Reviewers have reported catching 20 to 30 fish per person per day at some outposts, with walleye and northern pike being the primary targets.

Accommodations

The main lodge on Wallace Lake accommodates up to 16 guests across three light-housekeeping rental cabins — one deluxe cabin sleeping 6 to 8 people and two standard cabins sleeping up to 4 each — plus a central outdoor gathering area. The fly-in outpost cabins are light-housekeeping style and vary in size: Carroll Lake sleeps 6 to 12, Craven Lake sleeps 6 to 8, Gammon River sleeps 4, and Obukowin Lake sleeps 4 to 6. Outpost amenities typically include a full kitchen, hot and cold running water, showers, propane-powered stove and refrigerator, and solar lighting. Guests supply their own food for outpost stays. Boats with motors are provided at all outpost locations.

Summarized Review Highlights

Wallace Lake Lodge & Outposts, run by the Hnatishin family (James, Michele, Joe, and Paul), has earned a strong reputation among Manitoba fishing travelers, with the majority of reviewers rating their experience highly. Guests consistently describe the operation as well-run and attentive, with the owners and staff receiving frequent praise for their hospitality, local knowledge, and willingness to point guests toward productive fishing spots. The lodge maintains a small, intimate atmosphere, capping the main lodge at around 16 guests, which contributes to the sense of privacy and quiet that many reviewers appreciate.

The accommodations — both at the main lodge and the outpost cabins on lakes such as Obukowin, Carroll, and Craven, as well as the Gammon River — are widely praised as well-equipped and comfortable, with full kitchens, hot showers, quality boats and motors, fish finders, and clean, modern interiors. The outpost experience in particular draws strong reviews for its remoteness and wildlife. Fishing at the outpost lakes, which see little angling pressure, is described by several reviewers as outstanding, with walleye catches described as plentiful. The Gammon River is also singled out as a notable fishery.

The one notable concern comes from a reviewer who fished Wallace Lake itself in September and reported very poor walleye fishing, with several in their group catching little to nothing. Locals on the water attributed the decline to the lake having been netted out in prior years, and even lodge guides expressed surprise at any walleye being caught. This reviewer's advice was to enjoy the surroundings but temper fishing expectations on Wallace Lake proper, and to consider day trips to nearby lakes like Windsock. This destination appears best suited for groups of friends or repeat anglers seeking a remote, self-guided outpost experience with solid amenities, particularly those targeting walleye on the fly-in lakes rather than Wallace Lake itself. It may also appeal to those who value wildlife, trails, and quiet wilderness atmosphere alongside their fishing.

A Manitoba Fishing Adventure
When MWO TV finally got to travel north to Manitoba last August to visit Wallace Lake Lodge & Outposts, I couldn't have been more ready to go fishing. When you arrive, you'll discover that this operation is first-class in every respect, with the main lodge on Wallace Lake accommodating a max of only 16 guests. Owners James and Michele Hnatishin and sons Joe and Paul have taken great care to build excellent accommodations, with three well-appointed, super comfortable, ultra-modern housekeeping cabins plus a beautiful main lodge. Docks are available if you bring your own boat, or you can rent 16-foot Alumacraft boats equipped with 20 hp Yamahas and depthfinders as part of your package. We were immediately impressed by the quality of the outpost cabin at Carroll Lake, featuring three bedrooms, carved log furniture including an impressive dinner table, a moose head mount, a full-body black bear mount, and even laminated floors. Everything was spotless. All four outpost cabins are well-appointed, with solid docks, good-quality boats and motors, gas grills and fish cookers, solar lights and propane appliances, hot and cold running water and hot showers. Carroll Lake Outpost even features a Teflon fish cleaning station and washdown hose mounted on the dock! Like all Canadian outpost lakes that experience little angling pressure, the fishing action can be spectacular. We soon lost count of the sheer number of walleyes we boated that first day! With their list of delighted clientele, I'm certainly not the first to say that you absolutely will not be disappointed if you plan your Manitoba fishing adventure with the Hnatishin family! Their operation is first-class in every respect, and the Manitoba fishing is first-class!

Wallace is Awesome — Gammon River is a Fishing Paradise
Never used them but there's Wallace Lake lodge that has outposts on Obukowin, Craven, Carroll lakes plus the Gammon river. I have fished Craven and Carroll in the winter with great success so I would believe summer would be awesome. We spent 5 nights winter camping on Craven not far from the lodge. It was an adventure in itself to get that far by sled for the four of us. Wallace is awesome. Gammon River is a fishing paradise!

Great Accommodations, Poor Fishing in September
Stayed at Wallace Lake Lodge for 4 days this past September, great accommodations................can't say the same for the fishing. Have been making Sept. trips to various places, same group of guys (some average, some very good fisherman)..........first time at Wallace and the last. We now refer to this trip as the 'No Fish Lake' trip. My fishin buddy and I did catch about 20 Walleye, many in the group only caught a few but several caught none. Spoke to some locals on the water, many told us that fishing has been poor since the lake was netted out several years back. Guides who were working out of the lodge, mostly doing fly-ins I guess and getting ready for hunting season, were really surprised we caught some Walleye! My advise, great place, maybe go do some fishin, don't expect too much, enjoy the surroundings....................but consider making some trips to close by lakes, Windsock seems to be a favorite day trip.

Favourite Manitoba Fishing Lodge
Wallace Lake Lodge is without a doubt my favourite Manitoba fishing lodge. I've been staying at that lodge 2 or 3 times a year since 2013. The cabins are very well equipped with all of the comforts of home (including a full kitchen, bbq and fish fryer). The boats are newer and very well maintained. It was an added bonus to find fish finders included on two of the boats this year. The crew that run the place work hard to ensure you are well looked after. They do a great job of making things easy including highlighting all the best fishing spots. I can't say enough positive things about this place. I'm already looking forward to my next visit.

We stayed at the Obukwin outpost, Joey and Paul were so attentive from the moment we got out there. The privacy and quiet of that place was second to none! Fishing was amazing, lake is easy to navigate. There is the coolest clear lake, about a 10 min walk away. We absolutely loved our time, will definitely be back!
