Overview

Walleye Lake Outposts operates two self-guided housekeeping outpost cabins on Walleye Lake in Northwestern Ontario's boreal forest. The operation is accessible only by floatplane from Kenora, with guests departing from the Kenora Air Services docks. The outfitter is the only operator on Walleye Lake, meaning groups of six or more anglers who book both cabins have the entire lake to themselves.

The camps were originally built and operated by Randy Thomas, who retired in the early 2000s and sold to John Derouard, who ran the operation until 2022. Current owners Jamie Clemmens and James Hendy, both experienced bush pilots with over 20 years flying out of Kenora and Minaki with River Air, purchased the camps from Derouard and continue to operate them. Many returning guests have been visiting the lake for over 25 years across multiple ownership periods.

Best for: Small groups and friend parties seeking a self-guided, self-catered fly-in outpost experience with full privacy on a single lake.
Best time: The fishing season runs from May through October, with walleye and northern pike most active during peak summer months and smallmouth bass fishing strongest from June through August.

The Fishing

Walleye Lake is approximately two miles long with an average depth of 40 feet, offering roughly 30,000 feet of shoreline that includes weedy bays, rocky reefs, and small islands. The primary target species are walleye, northern pike, and smallmouth bass. Walleye average one to three pounds, with fish in the four-to-six-pound range regularly encountered; experienced anglers can catch and release upward of 50 walleye per day. Northern pike run larger, commonly in the 10-to-12-pound range. Smallmouth bass are most active from June through August, with many fish in the three-to-four-pound range. Morning and sunset are consistently the most active periods, though mid-day fishing near shore structure can also produce results. A four-minute portage from the main lake gives guests access to a boat and motor on Little Walleye Lake, adding an additional fishing option. The operation operates on a catch-and-release basis. Packages include 16-foot Lund boats with 8 HP Yamaha four-stroke outboard motors, one boat per two anglers, with fuel included.

Accommodations

The camp has two separate two-bedroom housekeeping cottages, each capable of sleeping up to eight guests. Eagle's Nest Lodge sits on a small island, while Two Loon Lodge is positioned on a remote point surrounded by water; the two cabins are over a mile apart. Both cottages feature carpeted bedrooms, screened-in porches, full kitchen facilities, solar-powered lighting, and washrooms with hot and cold running water and hot showers. Cooking utensils and satellite radio are provided. Guests are responsible for bringing their own groceries, and Kenora has multiple grocery stores for provisioning before departure.

Summarized Review Highlights

Based on available reviews, Walleye Lake Outposts has earned an outstanding reputation among anglers, with guests describing it as a world-class freshwater fishery and one of the best-value fly-in outfitters in its region. The single review available reflects a long-standing loyalty, with one group returning annually for over 15 consecutive years — a strong indicator of consistent guest satisfaction.

Guests praise the exceptional fishing for walleye, northern pike, and smallmouth bass. Walleye catches of 50 or more fish per day are reported, with some reaching 8–9 pounds, and northern pike are described as equally abundant. Smallmouth bass, while harder to target, are noted as large and hard-fighting. The facilities and equipment receive positive mentions, and the exclusive-use model — having a lake entirely to your group — is highlighted as a major draw. The value relative to other outfitters in the area is specifically called out as a strength.

With only one review to draw from, it is not possible to identify recurring complaints or concerns, nor to say definitively that none exist. What can be said is that this destination appears best suited for experienced anglers focused on high-volume catch-and-release fishing, particularly those targeting trophy walleye and northern pike. Groups of friends or fishing buddies who value privacy and exclusivity on their water would likely find this setup appealing. Those seeking a more curated or guided experience should confirm what services are included before booking.

World class walleye, northern pike and smallmouth bass fishery. An experienced fisherman can easily catch & release upwards of 50 walleye or more per day (some reaching 8-9 pounds) and similar numbers of northern pike as well. The smallmouth are harder to target but are large and ferocious fighters in the 4-5 pound range. Great facilities and equipment. Have a lake completely to yourself and friends. In 2010, I was able to catch and release 25 northern pike in 25 consecutive casts. It was captured on video from the dock at Two Loon Lodge Cabin. Our group has been making an annual fishing trip to Walleye Lake for over 15 consecutive years & have found this to be the best value by far of any outfitters in this area.
