Overview

Walsten Outposts is based in Kenora, Ontario and operates eight fly-in outpost camps plus one drive-in outpost on lakes within Ontario's Trophy Waters Conservation Area in northwestern Ontario. The outpost lakes served include Roger Lake, Lount Lake, Snowshoe Lake, Trout Lake, Joe's Lake, Nance Lake, Chase Lake, and the drive-in Separation Lake on the English River system. Guests book an entire lake exclusively for their group, with no other parties sharing the water.

In 2022, Alf Moncrief, Rob Perchuk, and Derek Grandbois took ownership from Kevin and Lizzy Walsten, continuing the operation while investing in cabin renovations and new builds. Both Alf and Rob are pilots and are known to personally fly guests in and out of camps. The outfitter also offers guided and unguided big game hunts for moose and bear in addition to fishing.

Established: 1962

Best for: Groups of anglers seeking a self-guided, exclusive-lake outpost experience in remote northwestern Ontario, including families, friend groups, and anglers targeting walleye, northern pike, or lake trout.
Best time: The outfitter operates through the open-water fishing season; walleye fishing is generally strongest from season opening through mid-to-late June.

The Fishing

The primary target species across the outpost lakes are walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, and lake trout, with muskie available on some lakes connected to the English River system. All lakes fall within the NWO Trophy Waters Conservation Area, which prohibits taking fish home — anglers may keep fish to eat on-site but must otherwise practice catch and release, a policy that has contributed to larger fish populations over time. Each lake has a distinct character: Lount Lake is part of the English River system and holds walleye, pike, and bass; Trout Lake features spring-fed, cold, clear water suited to lake trout and bass; Chase Lake sits on a three-lake chain with Eagle and Midway Lakes; and Nance Lake has tea-colored, mineral-rich water that supports strong walleye and pike habitat. All trips are self-guided housekeeping packages; guests bring their own groceries and fish on their own schedule using the boats and motors provided at each camp.

Accommodations

Cabins vary by lake but are generally self-catering housekeeping units equipped with fully functional kitchens, propane BBQs, Blackstone grills, outdoor fish fryers, lake maps, first aid kits, and drinking water. Several outposts have separate sleeper cabins and a main dining or communal cabin — Lount Lake, for example, has two sleeper cabins plus a main dining cabin with a screened-in porch, powered by solar with a generator backup. Roger Lake has two cabins accommodating up to 15 guests total, with a screened-in porch, wrap-around deck, flushing toilets, and an icehouse. Boats and motors, gas, and standard camp gear are included at all outposts. Guests are responsible for bringing their own food and personal gear, with a 100-pound per-person weight limit for floatplane access. Meals are not provided by the outfitter.

Summarized Review Highlights

Walsten Outposts generally earns positive reviews from guests, with most describing their trips as memorable and worth repeating. The majority of reviewers praise the remote, unplugged nature of the experience and highlight responsive, helpful staff — particularly booking coordinator Jo-Anne, who is credited with matching guests to the right outpost for their needs. The overall reputation across recent reviews is strong, though at least one older account (from 2015) describes a significantly negative experience at the Fort Separation cabin, including poor cabin conditions and a lack of response from management when concerns were raised afterward.

Guests consistently highlight the quality of fishing as the standout feature, with multiple reviewers reporting exceptional catch numbers. Cabins like Snowshoe Lake are described as large and well-equipped, and the setting — beaches, campfires, and full disconnection from technology — is frequently mentioned as part of the appeal. Staff responsiveness in the planning and booking process is also a recurring positive note.

The main concern surfacing in reviews is inconsistency between outpost locations. While some cabins receive high marks for amenities and upkeep, the 2015 Fort Separation review describes serious issues with cleanliness, pests, and cabin condition, along with frustration over no follow-up from the company. Prospective guests may want to ask detailed questions about the specific cabin they are booking. This destination appears best suited for small groups of friends or families looking for a self-guided, remote fly-in experience with strong walleye or general sport fishing, and those who value seclusion over resort-style amenities.

Avoid them like the plague!!
Avoid them like the plague!! We've been traveling to NW Ontario for many, many years and always wanted to try out a 'cabin style' trip rather than dragging our truck camper across Canada/U.S. as we have done for decades. We finally opted to try Walsten's Fort Separation cabin in 2015 (after looking over at it for 20 years) and we realized in about 20 seconds that the place was a complete 'sh thole' to quote our President. That mouse-infected, spider infested dump was a disaster! Trying to keep my wife and 22y/o daughter in that dump wasn't easy, and they are tough gals! When I (actually somewhat kindly!) contacted Walstens to outline the uber long and ugly list of complaints after our stay they didn't even have the gonads to respond. You've been warned!

You can't beat the fishing at Snowshoe Lake! Jo-Anne helped us figure out which outpost best suited our needs & she wasn't wrong! The cabin is large and well equipped. The girls spent time relaxing at the beach while we kept on fishing. Thanks Jo-Anne & Walsten Outposts for an unforgettable trip! We will be back!

We spent five days on Roger lake on a guys trip. They're working on some renovations to the cabin, but it had everything we needed. We were completely unplugged and spent the days fishing and nights sitting by a fire. I caught more fish than I ever have and would definitely go back. The owner and guides were responsive and helpful as well. Great trip and great people.
