Overview

Wenasaga Outposts is a self-guided, housekeeping-style outpost operation based out of Ear Falls, Ontario. The outfitter runs two separate remote fishing cabins — one on Jubilee Lake and one on Slate Lake — both located northeast of Ear Falls in the Canadian Shield region of northwestern Ontario. The operation is described as fly-in style, with guests staging from the owners' property near Ear Falls before being transported to their chosen lake.

The outfitter is associated with a family-run history in the Ear Falls area and is noted for keeping rates manageable by scheduling trips back-to-back, which means guests take responsibility for leaving the cabin in good condition for the next party. Rates are quoted in US funds, and a deposit per person is required to hold a reservation.

Best for: Self-guided groups of up to 8–10 anglers seeking a housekeeping-style remote outpost with consistent walleye and northern pike action.
Best time: The outfitter operates through the summer season; walleye and northern pike fishing is available throughout the open-water season.

The Fishing

Both Jubilee Lake and Slate Lake target walleye and northern pike as the primary species. The lakes feature dark Canadian Shield water with depths exceeding 90 feet, which supports healthy, year-round fish populations. Slate Lake offers over 50 miles of shoreline accessible from the outpost, while Jubilee Lake provides over 16 miles of shoreline with depths also exceeding 90 feet. The outpost on Slate Lake is situated at the cut between Slate and Lower Slate Lake, and the Jubilee outpost sits on the east bay, both positions allowing fishing in varied wind conditions. Each cabin package includes a 14-foot boat equipped with a Yamaha 4-stroke motor, swivel seats, anchor, bait bucket, and an ample fuel supply for the stay. No portaging to other lakes is required to find fish.

Accommodations

The Slate Lake cabin accommodates up to 10 guests with double and single beds, a fully equipped kitchen with refrigerator, freezer, sink, dishes and cooking utensils, a bathroom with shower and flushing toilet, a screened-in porch, hot water, and a wood stove for heat. Solar systems handle water pumping and lighting, and a generator is available on-site for 110V power needs. The Jubilee Lake cabin was fully rebuilt in spring 2012 to accommodate groups of up to 8; it has two large bedrooms, a custom dining table, futon, an enclosed screened porch with lake views, solar-powered lights and water, propane hot water and refrigeration, and a generator for additional power. Both cabins include a separate, fully screened fish-cleaning building and outdoor propane fish cooker and grill. Meals are self-catered; guests bring their own groceries.

Summarized Review Highlights

Based on the available review, guest sentiment toward Wenasaga Outposts is positive, with at least one reviewer offering a strong endorsement and recommending the outfitter to others considering a Canadian fishing trip. The single five-star review suggests a satisfying overall experience, though the limited volume of reviews makes it difficult to draw broad conclusions about consistent patterns in guest feedback.

The reviewer's enthusiasm was strong enough to prompt an unprompted recommendation, which generally reflects a trip that met or exceeded expectations. However, with only one brief review available, there is not enough detail to specifically identify what aspects of the experience — such as fishing quality, lodging comfort, staff helpfulness, or food — stood out most to guests.

Given the limited review data, it is not possible to identify recurring complaints or to reliably characterize which type of traveler is best suited for Wenasaga Outposts. Prospective guests looking for more detailed information about fishing species, cabin conditions, accessibility, or group suitability would benefit from contacting the outfitter directly or seeking out additional reviews from other platforms before making a booking decision.
