Overview

White River Air is the first and only fly-in outfitting air service based in White River, Ontario, covering an area of roughly ten thousand square miles north and east of Lake Superior. Operating since the 1950s, the outfitter runs multiple remote outpost camps on lakes specifically chosen for their remoteness and fishing quality. The operation is described by reviewers as a family-run business, with current owners reporting more than 25 years of personal involvement in all aspects of the operation, from booking trips to mid-week camp checks.

The outfitter offers several categories of outpost experience, including Wilderness Outposts, Deluxe Wilderness Outposts, Trout Outposts, Short Stays, Small Party camps, and Wilderness Camp Sites. With the ability to rotate and rest lakes for two to five years at a time, White River Air limits angler pressure at each location to maintain fish populations. Named outpost lakes include Shekak, Gourlay, Pickle, Hambleton, South Garnham, Cornish, Nameigos, Dayohessarah, Bulldozer, Jembi, Merekeme, and Pinei.

Established: 1950

Best for: Self-guided groups of anglers — from families to fishing parties — looking for a remote, self-catered fly-in outpost experience with a range of lake and cabin options.
Best time: The operation runs mid-May through September, with fishing available for walleye, northern pike, lake trout, and brook trout throughout the open-water season.

Highlights

Operating since the 1950s
Over a dozen named fly-in outpost lakes
10,000 square miles of Northern Ontario coverage
Walleye, northern pike, lake trout, and brook trout
Boats, motors, and unlimited fuel included
Wilderness and deluxe cabin tiers available
Lakes rested periodically to maintain fish populations

The Fishing

Target species at White River Air outposts include walleye, northern pike, lake trout, speckled trout (brook trout), and perch. The operation limits the number of parties on any given lake to reduce fishing pressure, with the stated goal of giving each group a realistic chance at a trophy fish. One lake, Pinei Lake on the Pukaskwa National Park boundary, is noted specifically for wild native brook trout and is accessible by a 15 to 20 minute float plane flight from White River. Reviewers report consistent success on northern pike and walleye, with some reporting pike exceeding 20 pounds in a given season.

All standard packages are self-guided and self-catered — anglers bring their own food and fishing gear, while boats, motors, and fuel are provided at the outpost. Trip lengths run three, four, or seven days.

Accommodations

White River Air offers two main tiers of outpost cabin. Wilderness cabins are fully equipped with a propane fridge, propane stove, propane lights, gas grill, boats, a motor, and unlimited fuel. Deluxe Wilderness cabins include all of the same amenities plus a generator, electric lights, and indoor washrooms with hot and cold running water. Anglers supply their own food and sleeping bags; all other equipment is provided. Reviewers consistently describe the cabins as clean, well-stocked, and well-maintained. No meals are provided by the outfitter; the trips are self-catered housekeeping packages.

Summarized Review Highlights

White River Air earns overwhelmingly positive reviews across multiple platforms, with nearly all guests rating their experience at or near the top of the scale. The company has built a strong long-term reputation, with many reviewers noting repeat visits spanning years or even decades. Guests consistently describe it as a well-run, family-operated business where the professionalism and friendliness of the staff — from phone staff like Brandi to dock hands and pilots — stand out as a defining feature. The fly-in experience itself, including the bush plane flights and the privacy of having an entire lake to oneself in the Canadian wilderness, is frequently described as a highlight that exceeds expectations.

Fishing quality receives high marks across a range of species, including walleye, northern pike, lake trout, and brook trout. Specific lakes such as Jembi, Bulldozer, and Gourlay are mentioned by name with praise for consistent catches. Cabins are described as clean and well-equipped, and the boats and aircraft are noted as reliable and well-maintained. The few criticisms that do appear are relatively minor: one first-time guest noted a lack of upfront communication about available equipment such as an inverter and boat anchors, and the absence of any lake or fishing briefing on arrival. Another reviewer mentioned a flooded and decaying dock caused by beaver activity that the outfitter was apparently unaware of. One guest noted that while their total catch was solid, their initial fishing expectations were perhaps too high. None of these concerns were repeated across multiple reviewers or described as trip-ruining.

White River Air appears best suited for anglers of varying skill levels who want a remote, self-guided fly-in outpost experience in Northern Ontario. The range of lakes and camp sizes makes it a reasonable fit for groups of friends, returning anglers chasing walleye or pike, and even families or first-time fly-in guests. The blog review also highlights it as a viable option for fly-fishing enthusiasts targeting brook trout on smaller lakes. Guests who prefer a fully guided or heavily hand-held experience may want to clarify expectations in advance, but those comfortable with a do-it-yourself setup will likely find the operation reliable and the fishing rewarding.

A Remote Fishing Adventure with White River Air
This spring I had the opportunity to do one of my favourite things—travel up to Northern Ontario with a friend for a do-it-yourself fly-fishing trip. The whole travel experience to the outpost was very easy, with the airstrip only a quick five-minute drive from our motel, and a short twenty-minute flight with White River Air to our final destination. We were pleasantly surprised by how clean and welcoming the outpost was. There was even the fun bonus of indoor plumbing. The two boats provided for us were in great shape. We had zero issues with the engines, and they were super easy to start. The little lake we were on was 100% Brook Trout. We put on sink tips, tied on mid-sized streamers, often favouring Woolly Buggers and Zonkers, and not surprisingly, got into the fish right away. The action was steady all day long. The average size was about 14 inches. Between the fishing, the BBQs, and the good conversations around the bonfires at night, Rob and I had a fantastic time.

Great trip off the grid.
Visited Gourlay Lake July 17 to 24 2023. White River Air provide an epic off experience. Very classy outfitters. Nice well equipped cabins and boats. The staff are very accommodating even the mascot (dog) makes you feel welcome. But most of all the fishing exceeds expectations. What more could you ask for no text no emails no internet. Just the call of the loons! Plus all the fish you can eat.

Outstanding Outfitter
I have been fishing and hunting with WRA for 30 years. They offer outstanding fishing for Northern Pike, Walleye, Lake Trout and Brook Trout. Our fishing group has been blessed to boat pike over 20lbs year after year and the walleye fishing is always fantastic! Their bush planes, pilots and remote outpost camps are top notch. This is a family run business and it shows, they treat you like family.

Walleye Factory
I have flown with White River Air (WRA) on several occasions and each trip has been fantastic. They offer a myriad of lakes to allow anglers to fish Pike, Walleye, Lake Trout and Brookies to name a few. Our most recent trip was to their Jembi Lake outpost camp. It is a true Walleye factory! This was my third visit to that lake for that very reason. Dan, Brandi and the entire organization are a pleasure to deal with. Do not hesitate to give them an opportunity to serve you!

Quality Outfitter
I've done many fishing trips with WRA to several different lakes, and all have been outstanding. The lakes provide you with a chance to enjoy the beauty of the Canadian North in privacy, while also affording you the piece of mind of easy to use boats, clean cabins with amenities that run like a watch. The staff, from the person you speak to on the phone, to the dock hands to the pilots are all polite and professional, and show a keen interest in making sure you have a wonderful trip be it 3 days or a full week. If you haven't tried a fly in fishing trip, or you are looking to test out a new outfitter, do yourself a favour and give them a call.

Memories that last a lifetime
After fishing for 15 years at a drive to cabin in Minnesota, my buddy John Butler told me that I should give a fly-in trip with White River Air a try. What great advice! I've fished Gourlay, Bulldozer and Pickle so far with WRA. Every trip has been one to remember. Dan, Brandi and the rest of the WRA team are great! Whether it's a deluxe outpost or wilderness outpost, the experience of having an entire lake to yourself is something that you can't adequately appreciate until you've done it. Coming from Michigan, the drive itself is a beautiful experience. I look forward to our next trip!

Bulldozer Lake – week-long trip report
Three of us spent a week on Bulldozer 2 years ago. We weren't all that hard core and caught 111 fish between us. Most of that catch was mine as the two guys in their 70s didn't have the stamina to spend as much time out as I did. Great lake with some NICE fish in it. My only complaint was beavers had raised the lake level a bit and the decaying dock was under water. The outfitter was unaware of that situation. Sounds like they are putting some work into the place, though.

Gourlay Lake – walleye and pike report
I spent a week on Gourlay about 20 years ago. Lots of eyes, but nothing big. I would get a limit every morning and then chase pike all day. It's nice and deep right off the dock, so we would enjoy a nice swim after lunch. I'd go back.

White River Air report – Bulldozer Lake
Just got back on Wed from my first fly in trip. We went with White River air and flew into Bulldozer Lake. First of all, the experience in and of itself being at an outpost was amazing. The flight in was a thrill for us as well. The pilots were great and cabin was pretty nice as well. We were a little bummed that the fishing wasn't better, but I think our expectations were probably a bit too lofty. First day on the lake we struggled, but we were mostly scoping it out. Each day we caught more fish and ended with a total of 90 pike and walleye for 3.5 days. The average size of walleye was very good! 19-20 inches was the size of most fish with a few 25s in the mix. Pike were plentiful, but our biggest was only 32". Overall, great experience, but a few complaints: 1) The outfitter didn't communicate to us that there was in fact a Honda inverter for our use. 2) They didn't tell us that the boats had no anchors. 3) No info from the outfitter on the lake and fishing was given. It seemed like they were just in a hurry to drop you off and get out of there. Again, I'd give the outfitter an 8/10, and the experience a 10/10. Had a blast and we want to do it again in two years. Loved it.
