Overview

Wilderness North is a fly-in fishing outfitter based in Armstrong, Ontario, with its guest services headquarters in Thunder Bay. The company describes itself as the largest collection of fly-in lodges and outpost cabins in northwestern Ontario, and has been operating in the region for approximately 30 years. Floatplane flights to the lodges and outposts depart from Armstrong, Nakina, and Thunder Bay.

The operation spans more than 17 different locations across the boreal forest of northwestern Ontario. Guests can choose from three tiers of service: full-service lodges with all meals and dock service included, housekeeping lodges with on-site managers and self-catered meals, and self-guided outpost cabins where guests have a remote lake largely to themselves. The company operates its own fleet of aircraft, including a DeHavilland Turbine Otter, to service all properties.

Best for: Anglers of all experience levels, from first-time fly-in guests to groups seeking a private lake for self-guided fishing, as well as those wanting full-service lodge amenities.
Best time: The season runs spring through fall, with late May through June generally considered the best period for walleye and northern pike.

The Fishing

The lakes and rivers accessible through Wilderness North hold walleye, northern pike, lake trout, and brook trout. Walleye and northern pike are the primary targets across most locations, while brook trout fishing is a particular draw on waterways such as the Albany watershed and the rivers near Miminiska Lodge. The company notes that late May through June is widely regarded as the peak fishing period.

At outpost camps, anglers fish privately held lakes with no competing parties. Lund fishing boats equipped with 15 hp Yamaha motors, padded swivel seats, minnow buckets, anchors, and landing nets are provided at outpost locations. Full-service lodges such as Makokibatan Lodge offer 16-foot Lund boats with 25 hp Yamaha four-stroke motors and depth finders. At some locations, anglers can fish a mix of lake and river habitat, including weeded bays for pike, rocky shorelines for walleye, and fast-moving rivers for brook trout.

Accommodations

Wilderness North offers three distinct accommodation formats. Full-service lodges, such as Makokibatan Lodge and Miminiska Lodge, include log or framed cabins, a main lodge building, all meals (typically breakfast and a three-course dinner daily), dock service, and daily housekeeping. Housekeeping lodges include light housekeeping and on-site managers but guests prepare their own meals. Outpost cabins are self-contained DIY accommodations on remote private lakes, where guests bring and cook their own food. Free WiFi is provided at all facilities, and potable water is available at full-service lodges.

Summarized Review Highlights

Wilderness North earns consistently strong praise across guest reviews, with nearly all reviewers awarding the highest possible ratings. Guests range from first-time fly-in visitors to anglers who have been returning annually since the 1990s, and the tone across reviews is one of genuine enthusiasm rather than polished promotion. The outfitter operates multiple remote lodge locations in Northern Ontario, accessible by float plane or wheeled aircraft out of Thunder Bay, and the overall reputation is that of a well-run, detail-oriented operation that delivers on its promises.

Fishing is the primary draw, and guests consistently report exceptional walleye and northern pike action, with multiple reviews describing trophy-sized fish caught in high numbers. Shore lunches, where staff fillet and cook the day's catch, are a frequently mentioned highlight. Beyond fishing, the lodges themselves receive high marks — accommodations are described as substantially more comfortable than the word "cabin" implies, with some properties offering multi-bathroom A-frames, full homes with gathering lounges, and fireplaces. Staff attention is a recurring theme: guests repeatedly note that requests, large or small, were handled promptly and cheerfully. Food quality, including full hot breakfasts, shore lunches, and multi-course dinners at higher-end properties, is praised across multiple reviews. At the more full-service lodges, amenities such as Starlink Wi-Fi, a tackle shop, a bar, and satellite TV are also noted positively.

Across the reviews collected here, there are no recurring complaints or significant concerns raised by guests. Every reviewer describes a positive experience, and several are repeat customers spanning decades. This absence of critical feedback may reflect a self-selected group of satisfied guests, so prospective visitors should be aware that fly-in fishing trips in remote Northern Ontario inherently involve factors like weather delays and rustic travel logistics, though none of the reviewers flagged these as problems. This destination appears best suited for groups of fishing buddies focused on walleye and pike, corporate or organizational groups seeking a premium all-inclusive remote experience, and returning anglers who value consistent service and proven trophy fisheries. Families and first-time fly-in guests are also mentioned, suggesting the operation accommodates a range of experience levels.

Miminiska Lodge Fun
Our company trip event, consisting of 24 Industry friends, employees and associates was just completed August 28th. I'm 75 years old, and I can honestly say that I've NEVER, in my entire life, experienced better fishing. But that's about the lake, Trip Advisor typically wants to know about the lodge and service. We split up into two groups. One was 14, the other 10. Wilderness North staffed the lodge with 6 experienced individuals plus two First Nation Guides from nearby Fort Hope, Ontario. Every day we were served a hot breakfast of our choice, a "staffed" shore lunch and a 3 course dinner preceded by a cocktail reception in the lodge "bar". When we went out to fish after breakfast, staff cleaned the lodge and completely cleaned and restocked our cabin accommodations. Cabins is a misnomer at Miminiska Lodge. Your "cabins" at this lodge are either 2 story, multi-bathroom A-Frames, or small 2 BR "homes". There's also a 4 BR one story "house". With the exception of the 2 BR "homes" each facility has its own "gathering lounge" complete with a bar, excellent furniture and a fireplace. The main lodge has a central gathering place with fireplace and satellite TV. Wi-Fi is "Starlink" and outstanding. Main lodge also has a "bar", "Tac Shop" (tackle, clothing, supplies), Pool Room & Table, a large "Meeting Room" and of course Dining Room. Wilderness North Ownership is strict and disciplined with staff. Service and attention are "the way it used to be". Remember, I'm 75! LOL. We came into the lodge from Thunder Bay in either their 8 passenger wheeled Cessna Caravan, or 8 passenger "Otter" Float Plane. Our accommodations on the night before our flights were at the convenient Valhalla Inn, right at YQT and were part of the "package". It was a great trip. I frankly can't think of any way in which Wilderness North could have made it any better! Full disclosure, we've been flying customers and friends into Northern Ontario since 2001. We've been at Miminiska Lodge multiple times over the years. Further, we'll be back at Miminiska Lodge (God Willing) in 2024.

Wow! Absolutely the best fishing trip ever!
Wow! What a great adventure…I have been going to Canada for fly-ins and drive-ins since 1974, and this was, hands down, Absolutely the best fishing trip ever! From the time we got to the McKenzie base and met the 1st point guys, (Regan and Travis), and then jumping onto our exciting DeHavilland Beaver flight, (Travis is an awesome pilot), to landing smoothly at Striker's Point Lodge, where we were greeted warmly with smiles by Darlene and Billy, and their great crew, we knew then that this was going to be a trip to remember. The Camp Crew was absolutely the finest I have ever worked with…Professional, friendly, knowledgeable, and we felt like we were family amongst them…and there was not one request that could not be done…all of our needs were met with "Yes I can"…They made us feel like royalty…Words cannot express the quality of their service and accommodations, (Cabin and Boats were 1st class), and food…(Wow!…is Mel a great chef, or what!) There were 4 gents in our group, and 2 of us were celebrating our 60th birthdays. The crew had decorated the cabin as a surprise with 60th birthday decor. They also had a celebration cake for us at dinner. The fishing was in one word, "Fantastic". Between 4 guys we caught over 1000 walleyes, most of them in the 16" to 20" range, with our biggest at 25". I also got a 45" northern pike on my Cyclops FireTiger spoon near the mouth of the 1st feeder creek. A very special thanks to everyone at the camp, Darlene, Billy, Matt, Colin, Mel, and Yvonne…All of you made this our best fishing adventure yet!

It's Just Like Coming Home
With the season rapidly coming to a close, I just wanted to take a moment to again personally thank everyone at Wilderness North for yet another, "once in lifetime" experience that we all enjoyed so much this past June at Makokibatan. Since our first trip in 1997, and each year that we've been able to return, it feels just as if we're coming home. What is there not to like/love about Makokibatan; other than the time spent is always too short. I've had the good fortune of having fished across Canada since 1959 and I truly believe that Makokibatan is the finest walleye fishery for both trophy size and numbers caught. I can't tell you how many days we have tired from catching so many fish. Yet, as world-class as the fishery is, so is the staff and the services they provide. The lodge is just the right size, with a welcoming atmosphere, and offers all the amenities we could ask for. But the best part, is that it's only 268 days until we're able to return again next year. God willing, I'll see you in June. Many Thanks, Charlie, Michigan

Amazing week at Striker's Point on Whitewater Lake
Just got back from a great week at the Wilderness North location at Strikers Point on Whitewater Lake. What an amazing place! If you enjoy catching loads of Walleye and Northern Pike, this is your place. And I'm not talking about little guys - we were catching 20"+ walleye and 30"+ pike. The staff there is top notch. I can't count how many times they took care of something for us - both big and small. Need more wood for the fire? They get it. Need more ice for your cooler (or your drinks)? They get it. You want to do shore lunch EVERY day (and we did)? They fillet your fish and cook it up. We were there a week and it was just a great value. Tons of fun with the boys...catch a boatload of fish...all in a beautiful setting!
