Overview

Woman River Camp & Outposts is a family-owned, remote drive-in housekeeping camp situated on Little Bear Lake, part of the Woman River Chain of Lakes in the Canadian Shield region of northwestern Ontario. The operation is run by Paul and Debbie Mossip and offers nine housekeeping cabins at the main camp along with four boat-to outpost cabins on Woman River and Confederation Lake.

The Woman River Chain of Lakes consists of 11 lakes connected by the river, covering over 40 miles of water. In addition to fishing, the camp offers hunting for black bear, moose, grouse, and timber wolf. Roughly 80 percent of guests are repeat visitors. The operation also includes access to numerous portage lakes, giving anglers additional water to explore beyond the main chain.

Best for: Families, couples, and small groups seeking a self-guided, drive-in housekeeping experience on a multi-species Canadian Shield lake system.
Best time: The camp operates across multiple seasons including open water and ice fishing; spring is noted as prime time for trophy northern pike, while walleye fishing is productive throughout the year.

The Fishing

The camp's multi-species fishery targets walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, lake trout, yellow perch, and whitefish. Walleye fishing on Little Bear Lake is considered among the stronger options in northwestern Ontario, with anglers fishing structure such as current, drop-offs, rock points, weed beds, and mudflats across the chain. Northern pike grow to large sizes on the system, with trophy fish caught regularly on the main lake chain, portage lakes, and from the South Bay Outposts on Confederation Lake. Lake trout can be targeted by casting or trolling in spring and fall, or by jigging deep water in summer, particularly from the outpost on Confederation Lake.

The camp enforces a mandatory live-release conservation policy for larger fish: walleye over 18 inches, northern pike over 27 inches, and lake trout over 25 inches must be released. Access to portage lakes is included for main camp guests, giving anglers the opportunity to fish smaller, less-pressured waters. Guided fishing is available, and a fish cleaning facility is maintained on site.

Accommodations

The main camp accommodates guests in nine modern light housekeeping cabins ranging from two to four bedrooms, sleeping four to ten guests each. Cabins feature knotty pine interiors, private decks, indoor plumbing with private bathrooms, fireplaces, and parking at the door. Cabins are fully furnished and equipped with essentials; guests provide their own food and fishing gear. The outpost cabins on Confederation Lake are equipped with propane stoves, electric fridges and lights, and solar-pumped water. A weekly camp cookout is held for all guests. The camp also offers Wi-Fi, freezer storage, and a centrally located fish cleaning house.

Amazing People!
It was an amazing time. We caught plenty of walleye, lake trout, pike and smallmouth bass. All the staff went out of their way to make sure that everything was fantastic. We will be back many more times to fish and hunt! This was one of the most exciting and memorable getaways I've ever had.
